donald trump criticized for saying 1917 spanish flu pandemic ended world war two

The U.S. President has been criticized for claiming the ‘1917’ Spanish Flu pandemic ended World War Two, which did not begin until 1939.

Donald Trump once again referenced the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic in comparison to the coronavirus crisis during a White House press briefing on Monday.

He accidentally connected it to World War II which began more than two decades later.

President Trump said the 'great pandemic' of 1917 'probably ended the second World War, all the soldiers were sick'

‘The closest thing is in 1917 they say, right? The great pandemic, certainly as a terrible thing,’ Trump said.

Then he said it ‘probably ended the Second World War, all the soldiers were sick.’

The Spanish flu, also known as the 1918 flu pandemic, lasted from February 1918 to April 1920.

It infected an estimated 500 million people – about a third of the world’s population at the time – in four successive waves.

The death toll is typically estimated to have been somewhere between 17 million and 50 million.

A White House official clarified to USA Today that Trump was referring to World War I.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the deployment of troops during WWI could have helped contribute to the spread of the Spanish Flu.

World War I ended after Germany surrendered on November 11, 1918. On June 28, 1919, Germany and the Allied Nations, including Britain, France, Italy and Russia, signed the Treaty of Versailles, formally ending the war.

Some took to Twitter to point out the President’s blunder. Actress and activist Sophia Bush tweeted:  ‘The Second World War ended in … 1945.

‘So to recap things we’ve learned since 2016 … 45 hasn’t read the Constitution, hasn’t read the Bible (but likes to hold one upside down), and clearly never took a US History class. Or … math? Cool cool, very cool.’

Rep. Eric Swalwell wrote: ‘The Second World War ended in 1945. It’s cruel for @DonaldJTrumpJr and family to let @realDonaldTrump stand out there like this.’

Star Trek actor George Takei warned against ‘distorting history’. He wrote: ‘The president thinks the Spanish Flu probably ended World War Two (!) because “all the soldiers were sick.”

‘The atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki fell 75 years ago yesterday, bringing a long and devastating war to a shattering, violent end. Remember history. Don’t distort it.’

new south wales records four new coronavirus cases after taxi driver worked eight days infected

New South Wales has recorded just four new COVID-19 cases on Monday, with 7,765 tests conducted across the state.

Three of the new cases are returned travellers in hotel quarantine while the other is a contact of a previously reported case linked to the cluster at the Concord Hospital in Western Sydney.

The dwindling numbers have enticed South Australian Premier Steven Marshall to push to open his state’s border with NSW.

‘We’re hoping that we can get the border open with NSW this week,’ Mr Marshall told ABC Radio Adelaide.

The South Australian Government’s coronavirus transition committee will meet on Tuesday to discuss NSW residents entering the state without needing to quarantine for two weeks.

Mr Marshall said he was mostly concerned about community transmission rates, after a COVID-positive taxi driver worked for eight days while infectious in Sydney.

A major contact tracing operation is underway after the driver worked for more than a week and visited venues in Sydney and the South Coast.

Mr Marshall said the driver’s case was ‘slightly worrying’.

‘But [SA’s Chief Public Health Officer] Nicola Spurrier and the transition committee will look at that very closely,’ he said.

If a decision is made to relax border controls, Mr Marshall said it would likely be implemented the same day for the convenience of families.

‘You see families completely dislocated — parents not being able to see their children or grandparents not being able to see grandchildren — so there’s a lot of reasons we want this to happen but we can’t do it until it’s safe to do so, but there’s certainly some very good signs this week at this stage,’ he said.

Test numbers in NSW dropped by nearly 6,000 from 13,635 in the previous 24-hour testing period, which is not uncommon for a weekend.

NSW Health would like to see levels above 20,000, particularly in South Western Sydney.

Chief Medical Officer Kerry Chant said NSW was at a critical phase in the response to the pandemic.

‘We are trying to identify any undetected chains of transmission in the community to drive it down towards no community transmission,’ she said.

‘That will put us in the best position ahead of the school holidays where we know people will be out and about travelling across the state.’

manhattan subway train derails after laughing homeless man throws metal clamps onto the tracks

Police in New York have arrested a homeless man who placed metal clamps on subway tracks and watched, laughing, as a train derailed, injuring three people.

The incident occurred in the West Village, as the uptown A train was entering the 14th St – Eighth Avenue station at 8:17 am.

The homeless man had found a pile of tie plates, which are normally used to secure the train tracks to the foundations, on a pile of construction materials at the 14th St. station, police sources told the New York Daily News

He took the plates and put them on the tracks before the train came into the station.

When the train pulled in, three of the subway cars derailed – and the homeless man was seen laughing as the train swerved.

About 30 people were evacuated from the train, and they helped detain the homeless man – who was spotted celebrating his accomplishment.

He was arrested and taken away by police, who are yet to file charges.

Three passengers suffered minor injuries.

One refused medical attention. Another was treated at the scene while the third was taken to Bellevue Hospital for further treatment, officials said.

The wheels on one of the derailed train cars were destroyed in the crash, and a third rail in the station collapsed upon impact, knocking out power to all four tracks in the station. Other rails were also badly damaged.

The power outage affected other trains on the line, with an A train becoming stuck in a tunnel beneath 34th Street.

All uptown A, C, D, E and F trains were being rerouted, causing extensive delays in Manhattan.

He has won three Super Bowls as part of the team.
