It’s 250 years since Beethoven’s birth… and his home city of Bonn is tuning up

its 250 years since beethovens birth and his home city of bonn is tuning up

Ludwig van Beethoven was arguably better at what he did than anybody else who has ever lived.

Bach, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, plus a handful of scientists and writers might give him a run for his money. But only the most churlish would disagree that the German composer knew a thing or two about music.

Today, almost 250 years after Beethoven’s birth, his work remains the mainstay of the classical repertoire.

This being his sestercentennial year, concert seasons, gala performances and mega celebrations were planned across Europe. But the pandemic intervened, and most events have been postponed until 2021.

Beethoven was born in the Rhineland city of Bonn. Now, between you, me and the Berlin Wall, Bonn represents as good a city break as any of its more vaunted neighbouring Teutonic cities. OK, it might not be the city that never sleeps — but it has much to offer.

You’ll be struck by Beethoven sonatas hanging on every breeze. It’s charming. You’ll also be struck by the sight of the Romanesque spires that adorn one of Germany’s oldest cathedrals. Named after two martyred saints, the 13th-century Basilica of St Cassius and Florentius was badly damaged during World War II.

But it rose from the ashes to become a noble building once again, and a significant example of medieval Rhenish church architecture.

Just across the cathedral square, within view of the Rhine, runs Bonngasse. We’re looking for number 20, where in December 1770 Beethoven was born.

The vine-covered house, looking out on a cobbled inner-courtyard, is now home to the Beethoven-Haus Museum. Inside it’s stuffed with portraits, scores, notes, instruments, batons and manuscripts.

Refurbished for the anniversary, the building houses the console of an organ the young Ludwig played, the viola he used in a court orchestra, and his last grand piano.

The museum poignantly describes Beethoven’s worsening deafness and the despair that went with it. And in an exhibit that might be filed under Too Much Information (TMI), a medical checklist reveals that he also suffered from chronic diarrhoea.

A short stroll from Bonngasse stands the 14th-century gothic church of St. Remigius. This is where baby Ludwig was baptised — the marble-bottomed baptismal font survives.

Nearby is Palace Church, where, as a child, he was assistant court organist. Ludwig gave his first performance when he was seven, although the promotional material said he was six — the same age as Mozart when he gave his first recital the previous decade.

For authentic Beethoven nosh, stroll down to The Em Hottche at Markt 4, one of Bonn’s oldest restaurants dating back to 1389.

It’s believed Beethoven wined and dined here, ‘entertaining a lady friend’, according to the cafe literature.

The two epicentres of Beethoven’s life were Bonn and Vienna. The composer wrote many of his most famous works in the Austrian city. Both will be hoping that 2021 will see a return to normal life.

Until then, it’s something of an unfinished symphony.

annastacia palaszczuks rival vows to enforce a youth curfew in major queensland cities if elected

Annastacia Palaszczuk’s rival has vowed to enforce a youth curfew to combat crime in major Queensland cities if elected.

The premier and Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington are on the hustings in Townsville on Wednesday.

Ms Frecklington unveiled her major law and order plan to fight crime, which involves imposing a curfew of 8pm in Cairns and Townsville for youths aged 14 and younger and 10pm for youths aged 15-17.

Under the plan, parents will be slapped with a $250 fine per child found on the streets without a reasonable excuse during curfew hours.

‘This is about making sure that parents become responsible for their children,’ she said.

‘In fact everyone in our community must be responsible for the crime problem that we have here in Townsville.

‘We’ve got to give police the powers that they need.’

The LNP leader said police will use common sense to determine whether a child needs to be taken to a community refuge if they are found out after those times.

The child would be held there until they could be picked up by a social worker or a parent.

‘The police here in Townsville know who these youths are, they know the youths are laughing in the face of the police officers, they are laughing in the face of the government because Labor are soft on crime,’  Ms Frecklington said.

‘Common sense will prevail. If the child is naturally doing the right thing and they are on their way home, then naturally they will be allowed to go home.’

The two party leaders are vying for votes in the garrison city, where three marginal seats are held by Labor, ahead of the October 31 state election.

Ms Palaszczuk has promised to build a second Bruce Highway, parallel to the coastal road, between Charters Towers and Mungindi.

‘A second Bruce Highway would take trucks off the existing Bruce, making it safer for communities from Gympie to Townsville,’ she wrote on her Facebook page on Wednesday morning.

‘Activating an inland freight route will also reduce travel times, support jobs and increase economic activity.’

Her promise rivals an earlier pledge by the LNP to widen the existing Bruce Highway from two to four lanes for 1450km from Curra to Cairns.

Ms Frecklington’s plan would cost $33 billion over 15 years, with the state chipping in $440 million annually and the federal government expected to cover the rest.

After campaigning in Townsville, Ms Frecklington will fly north to Cairns to pledge $180 million for to upgrade Cairns University into a university hospital.

‘The university hospital will catapult Cairns health services into a new era, and patients will be able to get advanced treatments at this state-of-the-art facility,’ she said.

‘Far north Queensland has waited too long for its fair share under Labor.’

Ms Palaszczuk has also promised funding of $67.9 million to upgrade to Cairns Hospital.

She has pledged to work with James Cook University to revamp the facility so students can practise medicine there.

Queensland’s northern regional cities are being targeted by both major parties, with One Nation and Katter’s Australian Party also campaigning heavily.

Ms Palaszczuk received a boost on Tuesday night, with an Essential Poll showing she enjoys a 62 per cent approval rating.

She is the third most popular premier after Western Australia’s Mark McGowan and NSW’s Gladys Berejiklian, according to the survey.

The Electoral Commission of Queensland said on Tuesday 228,000 ballots had been cast in pre-poll voting across the state.

More than 820,000 people have applied to vote by post.

fbi has taken possession of hunter bidens laptops

Hunter Biden’s laptop has been seized by the FBI, which has supported earlier claims that his emails are not part of a Russia disinformation campaign, according to reports.

Senior federal officials told Fox News on Tuesday that the bureau is now in possession of the computer allegedly containing emails that could purportedly implicate Joe Biden in his son’s international business dealings during his time as vice president.

Federal law enforcement reportedly confirmed that the emails in question are ‘authentic’.

Insiders said both the FBI and the Department of Justice also concurred with National Intelligence John Ratcliffe’s assessment on Monday that there is no evidence to support the files are part of a Russian disinformation scheme.

The FBI however refused to confirm whether or not it is examining the laptop and its contents when contacted by the network.

It comes hours after President Trump demanded that Attorney General Bill Barr ‘act fast’ and appoint a special counsel to probe his Democratic rival before Election Day.

Trump on Tuesday said Barr must appoint someone to probe the laptop of Biden’s son, Hunter, which has become the subject of repeated Trump attacks on his rival after the president’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani says he handed over what were the contents of Hunter’s laptop to the New York Post.

The president said it revealed ‘major corruption’ and that it has to come out before the election.

His demand would appear to run smack into a Justice Department policy against taking actions that would interfere in an election – an issue that played out in 2016 in both the Hillary Clinton email probe and the then-unknown Russia probe.

‘We’ve got to get the attorney general to act. He’s got to act. And he’s got to act fast. He’s got to appoint somebody,’ Trump said, asked about naming a special counsel on ‘Fox & Friends.’

‘This is major corruption and this has to be known about before the election,’ Trump said in the call-in appearance on the network.

After issuing his demand to Barr, Trump immediately segued into to the elections, saying: ‘And by the way, we’re doing very well. We’re going to win the election.’

On Monday, DNI John Ratcliffe said Hunter Biden’s laptop ‘is not part of some Russia disinformation campaign’ as he blasted Rep. Adam Schiff for saying dirt on Trump’s rival came from the Kremlin.

He confirmed that the FBI have the laptop but did not comment on whether they are investigating its contents.

Ratcliffe, a Trump loyalist who assumed his post in May, accused Schiff of having ‘politicized’ intelligence – and responded to Schiff’s claim about the mysterious laptop that Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani says he obtained from a computer repair shop owner.

Its contents, which Giuliani provided to the New York Post, include emails purporting to show business ties between Joe Biden and his son, who in documents looks to be seeking to cash in on his father’s former position as vice president in Ukraine and in China.

‘It’s funny that some of the people that complain the most about intelligence being politicized are the ones politicizing the intelligence,’ Ratcliffe told Fox Business on Monday.

‘And unfortunately, it is Adam Schiff who said the intelligence community who as you pointed out on Friday said that the intelligence community believes the Hunter Biden laptop and emails on it are part of a Russian disinformation campaign,’ he added.

‘Let me be clear: the intelligence community doesn’t believe that, because there is no intelligence that supports that. And we have shared no intelligence with Chairman Schiff, or any member of Congress that Hunter Biden’s laptop is part of some Russian disinformation campaign. It’s simply not true.’

However he also said that the FBI, which is part of the intelligence community, was in possession of Hunter Biden’s laptop.

‘The FBI has had possession of this,’ Ratcliffe said. ‘Without commenting on any investigation that they may or may not have, their investigation is not centered around Russian disinformation and the intelligence community is not playing any role with respect to that.’

Giuliani provided the Post with a subpoena for the laptop dated December 19, 2019, an indication it has been in the bureau’s possession for months.

Ratcliffe, who was a vocal defender of Trump during impeachment where Schiff played a key role, called out people using the Intel community to ‘leverage some political narrative.’

Schiff told CNN that ‘We know that this whole smear on Joe Biden comes from the Kremlin.’

‘That’s been clear for well over a year now that they’ve been pushing this false narrative and the vice president and his son. … pushing this Kremlin narrative is pretty breathtaking. … and the president is only too happy to have Kremlin help to amplify it.’

The attacks come amid continued questions about the Hunter Biden emails that have roiled the campaign in its final weeks.

President Trump has seized on the information and has made it the focus of election rallies over the weekend, seeking to portray the Bidens as a ‘crime family.’
