EastEnders’ Shaun Williamson says he can’t get hired for ‘serious’ roles

eastenders shaun williamson says he cant get hired for serious roles

EastEnders icon Shaun Williamson has claimed he can’t get hired for ‘serious’ roles due to his soap past.

The 54-year-old TV star – who played loveable Barry Evans in the BBC One show between 1994 and 2004 – believes his association with the soap character means industry bosses wouldn’t consider him for more experimental jobs.

‘They won’t hire me to be the serial killer in the next series of Line Of Duty because they would feel I lack credibility in that sort of role’, the actor said in a new interview.

The media personality insisted that while he thinks it’s ‘tragic’ he can’t further his career by taking on different roles, he has earned ‘well-paid’ work with his typical comedic portrayals.

Shaun added to Daily Star: ‘You make a conscious decision when you leave a soap that you either stay on the path of being a serious dramatic actor or you become a TV personality and I erred towards the latter.

‘I did Five Go Barging last year and what a craic to be on a barge for two weeks with John Prescott. No-one’s going to pay me to be Uncle Vanya in ‘Chekhov’ and there is something a little bit tragic about that, but that’s just the way it goes.’

Despite rising to fame on EastEnders, the Extras star confessed he wouldn’t mind switching lanes by appearing in a rival soap such as Emmerdale or Coronation Street.

Shaun’s legendary character Barry was killed by his unfaithful partner Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks) after she pushed him off a cliff in a bid to inherit his wealth.

The thespian has gone on to star in shows such as Dani’s House, Scoop and Life’s Too Short, as well as dabbling in stage and radio productions.

Last month, the artist revealed he has a secret son after fathering a child with a circus juggler over 30 years ago.

The singer described how he received an email in 2013 by a 32-year-old man named Gary living in Northern Ireland who claimed to be his son.

The actor, who has a daughter Sophie, 22, and son Joseph, 20 with ex-wife Melanie Sacre, told how the revelation was ‘the most frightening but amazing discovery’.

He told The Sun on Sunday: ‘When I found out I had another son, I was stunned. I was shaking when I went to meet him.

‘He said he never thought in a million years that Barry from EastEnders could be his dad.’

‘I didn’t know that I would be able to get pregnant on my own so I’m just so excited that we were able to do this naturally and that everything looks good. I’m so excited to have a healthy baby and hug my baby and just be a mom.’

Shay ‘bawled her eyes out’ upon discovering they got pregnant so quickly after waiting only ‘one period and ovulation cycle.’

‘After a miscarriage, I was definitely even more aware of my body, but just so much more cautious and scared…I was just too afraid to lift up a 5lb weight. I was like, “But what if that makes me have a miscarriage?”‘ the Clearblue brand ambassador explained.

‘It was every little thing, which I’m sure was driving Brock crazy because he’s like, “You’re fine!” But I was just like, “I need to make sure, I need to make sure” — and now we’ve made sure! Everything is good.’

Gary Numan and his wife Gemma have recalled the moment her breasts ‘exploded’ during a camping trip.

‘It did look like a shark attack and Gary had to hold it together!’

Gemma, 52, spoke candidly about her body image, and how she has always wanted to make changes to it.

‘I hate how I look, I always hate it. I was getting the fat sucked out when I was 22,’ she admitted.

Gary, 62, also spoke of his own dabbling with cosmetic procedures.

‘I’ve not had much, I’ve had my hair done but it’s Gemma that’s getting [stuff done],’ he said, before adding: ‘Do you know what she was doing while we were waiting [to go on air]?

‘She was taking pictures of her nose because that’s the next thing!’

Gemma was famously a fan of the singer before they eventually met and fell for one another.

Gemma explained: 'We were on a caravan trip and I just got the stitches out, and I turned to the kids and it split!'

‘I was just a normal fan. My dad works at a record company. I met [Gary] when I was younger, when I was maybe 12, and then we would meet in air shows and take pictures together.

‘Then when my mum died in 92 that was when we started talking properly.’

Gary said: ‘Normally I’d see her at every gig and I asked her where she’s been and she said that something had happened to her mum, so we got to talking and it was more than just “can I have your autograph?”‘

Gemma famously told her teachers it didn’t matter if she passed any exams because her life path — arm in arm with her pop idol, a regular on Top Of The Pops — was already set. She wrote to Jim’ll Fix It asking if he could fix their wedding.

They have three daughters, Raven, Persia and Echo, decamping from Britain in 2012, now living in Los Angeles, in a house which was built in the Nineties but modelled on a medieval castle.
