Issa Rae appeared in a segment during Sunday’s Emmy Awards in which she spoke about how she persevered through adversity and racial bias en route to the success she’s found with the HBO show Insecure.

The 35-year-old actress/writer recalled, ‘My first Hollywood pitch was kind of unofficial: Basically, I had this web series. It was the third web series I had ever made.

She said the executive, who she pitched the show to, who was not Black, was like, “Yes, I saw your show. Funny stuff… Funny stuff.” And I was like, “Um, thank you.”

‘He was like, ”Yeah, it’s about this Black woman and her Black-woman problems. Hilarious.” And I was like,”That’s not what it’s about. But okay.”’

The Los Angeles native recalled how the executive told her ‘the Black audience … want to see familiar faces’ so she could have ‘to switch up the characters’ to make the show a success.

Rae said that ‘it just became very clear to [her] that he didn’t get the show,’ and her ire over the situation fueled her drive to success in the industry on her terms.

‘I remember just fuming in that meeting like, ”Why does he get to tell me what gets to be on TV? Why does he get to tell me what people like me like to see? I’m here! I’m telling you what I want to see. I made it,”‘ she said.

‘For me, that moment was the motivation I needed to keep doing what I was doing – to kind of bet on myself.

‘And that fueled me. Like, ”Oh, okay. I’ll show you.” And, you know, one of us got fired after that.’

Rae’s Insecure on Sunday was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series, in addition to acting nods for Rae and co-star Yvonne Orji.

Rae’s remarks came in a segment in a year which the Emmys saw a record number of Black actors – about 34 percent of all nominees – up for awards, Variety reported. The previous high was about 28 percent in 2018, and last year, about 20 percent of the nominees were Black, the outlet reported.

Television Academy chairman and CEO Frank Scherma said when the nominees were announced: ‘2020 isn’t just about the global health crisis. This year we are also bearing witness to one of the greatest fights for social justice in history, and it is our duty to use this medium for change.

‘That is the power and responsibility of television – not only delivering a multitude of services or a little escapism, but also amplifying the voices that must be heard and telling the stories that must be told. Because television, by its very nature, connects us all.’

Sunday’s show marked a socially distant event amid the ongoing COVID-19 virus, with most participants appearing via remote. In July, the show was moved to be held virtually with the pandemic continuing.

She regularly wows her fans with snaps of her impressive figure.

And Rita Ora revealed how she keeps so fit as she shared a snap from a Heartcore Pilates studio where she was about to start an intense workout on Saturday.

The singer, 29, showed off a glimpse of her abs as she posed for a mirror selfie in a black top that she had tucked into her sports bra before the session began.

Rita kept her workout look simple as she slipped into a pair of black gym leggings and quirky socks that were designed for her workout.

She pulled her blonde locks back into a messy bun, and she chose to embrace her natural beauty by not wearing any make-up.

After the session, Rita shared a snap of her legs as she put her feet up at home, and she also showed off her stylish Nike trainers.

The singer recently sparked engagement rumours with boyfriend Romain Gavras after she was spotted wearing a diamond ring on her wedding finger.

A diner at the restaurant told The Sun on Sunday: ‘Rita was showing off the ring on Thursday with the women seemingly cooing over it.

‘She seemed in high spirits when she left the restaurant and then shoved her hand in her pocket.’

While James Constantinou of Prestige Pawnbrokers said the artist’s new piece of jewellery appeared to be a sapphire and diamond cluster ring, which if an antique piece, could cost around £50,000.

However despite the speculation, a source close to the musician told the publication that the singer has simply treated herself to a new flashy piece of vintage jewellery.

MailOnline contacted Romain Gavras’ representative for a comment while Rita’s spokesperson declined to comment.

Little Mix opened the first live show of The Search with a bang as they performed their new single Sweet Melody on Saturday.

Taking to the stage after the performance, host Chris Ramsay said: I am so happy to finally say welcome to Little Mix The Search. We are here to find the next big thing in music.

When the ladies took their seats, Chris added: ‘Now obviously Jade is currently isolating at home but we have her here.’

Jade then appeared on screen from home and admitted she was saddened to not be in studio.

‘She said: ‘I am doing alright, I’m obviously gutted that I can’t be here tonight but I’m happy that I can do it from home.’

Jesy added: ‘With bands like this normally, there’s a frontman but with you boys, you’re all frontmen, you all own the stage.’

The group performed Case of the Ex (Whatcha Gonna Do) by Mya and were praised as ‘the strongest vocalists of the whole competition’ by Perrie and received a score of 90 per cent.

Next up were New Priority who performed Can’t Feel My Face by The Weeknd and received a more mixed reception from the judges with Jesy saying: ‘Something was missing for me.’

However, Jade disagreed saying: ‘Jesy Nelson what were you listening to? The audacity! You should be proud of yourselves boys, well done,’ with the group getting a score of 87 per cent.

Jasper Blue were next and performed I Just Got Paid by Sigala, Ella Eyre and Meghan Trainor and were praised for their uniqueness by Leigh-Anne and Perrie. The group received a score of 79 per cent.

The competition series was postponed earlier this month when a ‘small number’ of crew members contracted the virus.

The statement read: ‘Jade has to self-isolate this week and will therefore be carrying out her role as Mentor on Little Mix The Search from home.

‘For this Saturday’s show, Jade will participate via video link, continuing to mentor alongside Jesy, Leigh-Anne and Perrie.’

Despite mixing with the crew members in question, artists Jade, Perrie, 27, Jesy and Leigh-Anne, both 29, have gotten the all-clear.

‘They’ve all tested negative and do not need to isolate,’ a source told The Sun. ‘They will be regularly tested throughout the run of the series.’

A spokesperson for the BBC added: ‘We can confirm that a small number of people on the Little Mix The Search production have tested positive for coronavirus and they are now self-isolating following the latest government guidelines.

‘Due to the format of the show we have made the decision to postpone Saturday’s programme.

‘There are rigorous protocols in place to manage Covid-19 as the safety of all those involved in the production is paramount. We hope to be back on air on Saturday 24 October.’

Host Chris Ramsey had also taken to Twitter to confirm he’d also tested negative for COVID-19 as he told fans he was ‘gutted’ the live shows had been postponed.

It comes after the model filed a request for an emergency court hearing in August, seeking to force her ex-husband Seal to allow her to take their children to Germany with her in October.

While he expressed concerns about the kids travelling to Europe during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Seal has now agreed to allow Heidi to take them with her, People reported at the time.

In return, Seal will get expanded visitation with the children both before they leave and upon their return, according to the publication, as well as being able to see them while they are in Germany if he so wishes.

Heidi is going to Germany to film a new season of the country’s Next Top Model reality show.

In her previous court filing, she explained that the series is normally filmed in the USA but the German cast and crew are not permitted currently to enter America due to the pandemic.

Heidi and Seal, 57, who married in 2005 and finalised their divorce in 2014, share joint legal and physical custody of biological children Henry, 15, Johan, 13, and Lou, 11. He adopted Heidi’s 16-year-old daughter Leni.

The model married German guitarist Tom Kaulitz in 2019.

In legal documents obtained by TheBlast.com on August 20, Heidi explained that the children did not want to be parted from her for the three-and-a-half months she’s contracted to be in Germany but that Seal had not signed off on the trip.

Instead, she stated, he preferred the children to remain in Los Angeles, where he also resides.

The Kiss From A Rose hitmaker – real name Henry Samuel – has previously permitted the kids to travel with their famous mother, but after initially agreeing in April to the fall trip to Germany, Heidi said he changed his mind.

She explained: ‘My work in television supports our family. Neither Henry (Seal) nor I pay child support to one another, and because our children are with me the vast majority of the time, I take on a larger portion of their regular expenses.

‘I am well aware of all the necessary precautions associated with the Covid-19 virus, and would never put our children at risk. I have taken all the precautions for Germany the same way I do in the US.’

In his own legal filing, Seal responded that he was suspicious of his ex’s motives.

‘Heidi is a celebrity and a German national and I am concerned that if she is allowed to take the children to Germany, she may unilaterally decide not to return them to the United States,’ Seal said.

He also stated: ‘Notwithstanding Heidi’s request, if granted, could in effect move the children away from me and their home here in Los Angeles to Germany for what could be an indefinite period of time given the uncertainty of the impact of COVID-19 on this country’s and Germany’s travel restrictions which could change at any time and prevent the children from leaving Germany or entering the United States.’

The new agreement he has reached with Klum states that should the coronavirus crisis escalate to the point where the US decides to shut down its borders, Heidi must ‘immediately make arrangements in an effort to return home with the children before the borders close.’
