Leigh-Anne Pinnock has spoken about the first time she experienced racism – at just nine-years-old.

The Little Mix star, 28, was bullied at school and told she was ‘from the jungle’.

Appearing on Channel 4’s The Talk, on which black celebrities recount their experiences with racist abuse, Leigh-Anne sat between her parents and told her story.

‘In primary school, a boy wrote on a bit of paper, “Name: Leigh-Anne. Age: Nine. Nationality: Jungle”,’ she recalled.

‘I saw it, and my heart just dropped. I knew it was racism. I was nine years old, I knew it was racism. I was just distraught by it!’

She added: ‘I just wish that I knew more back then, I just wish that I was more educated on this and I knew that, yeah, your race will hold you back a little bit. I just wish I knew that so I could prepare myself.’

Her fans praised her for her honesty on social media.

‘And as you once said, “you ARE ENOUGH, you will always BE ENOUGH and you always WERE ENOUGH.” I love you.’

Another added: ‘Proud of Leigh and everyone who spoke in the documentary. Such an important matter!’

Another typed: ‘Growing up in my area, surrounded by white people, i never even thought racism exists. No one really taught me anything about racism. Because of Leigh, i started educating myself and have learnt so much…

Someone else wrote: ‘#TheTalk was very hard to watch but very important. Please take some time of your life and go watch this amazing documentary. Educate yourself on racism and how much of a big deal it is.

‘Special message to Leigh-Anne: you are so LOVED and so strong Black heart Proud is an understatement.’

In June, the songstress took to Instagram to share her experiences as the only black member of girl band Little Mix.

Leigh-Anne, whose bandmates are Jesy Nelson, Perrie Edwards and Jade Thirlwall, tearfully admitted that she feels ‘invisible’ at times in the group.

The star also shared that she always feels like the ‘least favoured’ and has to work ‘ten times harder’ in Little Mix.

Leigh-Anne said during the five minute video: ‘My reality is feeling anxious before fan events and signings because I always feel like I’m the least favoured.

‘My reality is constantly feeling like I have to work ten times harder and longer to make my case in the group, because my talent alone isn’t enough. My reality is all the times I felt invisible within my group.

‘Part of me is fully aware that my experience would have been ever harder to deal with had I been dark-skinned. Our reality is no matter how far you think you’ve come, racism exists.

‘So let’s all continue to speak up on racism and keep this movement going. Thank you.’

The likes of Ade Adepitan, Tinie Tempah, Emeli Sande, and Jordan and Ashley Banjo also appeared on The Talk.

And pregnant Rochelle Humes revealed she once tried to ‘scrub her skin off’ after receiving racist abuse when she was a child.

The This Morning presenter, 31, broke down in tears as she discussed the ordeal, sitting next to her husband Marvin, 35.

The singer cried as she said: ‘My legs were red, because I’d tried to scrub my skin off.

‘I’m not upset for me, I’m just upset because I think my little girl is the same age. I just don’t know how I would handle that.’

Sharing the clip on Instagram the mother-of-two penned: ‘Opening up about racism and my challenges was overwhelming as it reminded me that we still live in a world where racism is normalised and accepted.

‘I don’t want my children growing up in a world where they think that their heritage and skin colour could be judged negatively. That’s why I was so emotional, not for me, but for every child or person who has been made to feel like they were not enough because of their skin colour.

‘So I allowed myself to open up and be vulnerable about this topic publicly to help support others through shared experience and also educate people on the lasting impact racism and discrimination can have on people.’

The former Saturdays singer shares daughters Alaia-Mai, seven, and Valentina, three, with husband Marvin, who listened attentively as she spoke in the clip.

Back in June Rochelle and Marvin spoke candidly to their followers about the importance of having conversations surrounding racism following the death of George Floyd in the US.

The couple shared the video to their respective Instagram pages in place of their ‘Stay Home With The Humes’ Friday night disco.

Rochelle stressed how important it is for their children to know they are ‘enough’ and how they want them to be ‘proud’ of their heritage.

Marvin began: ‘Hey guys how you doing? Normally we’d be getting ready for our Stay Home With The Humes House Party, but it just doesn’t feel right. It has been a massive few days around the world after the tragic killing of George Floyd.’

The JLS singer continued: ‘And of course Black Out Tuesday that happened this week as well.’ Rochelle then shared: ‘Initially we were quite sceptical about Black Out Tuesday.’

Rochelle continued: ‘We thought it can’t just be one day. It can’t be one week, one month. It needs to be a conversation that keeps happening. But I think it’s been far more positive than we could have hoped.’

Marvin went on: ‘Definitely, we’ve seen so many people that follow us, people we follow, friends, family, work colleagues take time this week and understand the challenges other communities face at the hands of racism.’

Rochelle then said: ‘It’s been a beautiful thing. Previously these conversations might have made people feel uncomfortable. Maybe innocently not wanting to say the wrong thing. We’ve seen that with friends.’

Marvin continued: ‘I’m in a WhatsApp group with five other white guys, I’m the only black guy in the group and one of them opened up a conversation about race and he shared his experiences growing up and what he’s seen and we had a lengthy conversation on the group. And it was a conversation that would have never happened if we hadn’t had the events of the last week.’

The mum-of-two then said: ‘And sadly an innocent man died so we can have these conversations. It breaks my heart. ‘It’s the unthinkable. Sadly it’s not just one incident, it’s been going on for generations.’

The Talk can be watched on catch up on All4.

Channel Nine urged to hire psychologist for reality stars on Married At First Sight and Love Island

channel nine urged to hire psychologist for reality stars on married at first sight and love island

Channel Nine has been urged to hire a psychologist for reality stars on shows like Married At First Sight and Love Island by a leading mental health expert.

Psychologist Dr Kate Baecher, who has worked on The Bachelor and I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, made the recommendation in a report to the broadcaster.

She also criticised Nine for not having a risk management system or register, which she said should be implemented in addition to hiring a resident psychologist.

Dr Baecher’s report recommended Nine only work with production companies who agree to high standards of mental health, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Married At First Sight is produced by Endemol Australia while Love Island is produced by ITV Studios Australia.

Despite the harsh criticisms, Dr Baecher said Channel Nine overall has a ‘robust duty of care system’.

Nine ‘has been proactive and forward thinking in its implementation of its duty of care responsibilities’ and ‘largely met the requirements of Workplace Health and Safety legislation’, according to Dr Baecher’s report.

The recommendations come after MAFS star Natasha Spencer, 26, had a ‘mental breakdown’ and was rushed to hospital in April.

‘I had anxiety a week leading up to it [the finale]. I was at home and had a breakdown. I got taken under a section 22, a medical hold,’ Natasha told Daily Mail Australia at the time.

A hold or involuntary hospitalisation often occurs when patients need urgent medical care, or so that doctors can determine their mental state.

Natasha said the doctors ‘thought I was a danger to myself’ and evaluated her for two to three hours before discharging her.

She has since been very vocal advocate about mental health and posted a photo of her ‘wedding’ to Mikey Pembroke on MAFS earlier this month.

‘Little did I know that the next five weeks would spiral me into the worst mental state that I had ever experienced and the public backlash that would be awaiting me would continue my downward spiral for months,’ she captioned the post.

At the time of Natasha’s breakdown, Channel Nine told Daily Mail Australia that they take the health and well-being of MAFS stars ‘extremely seriously.’

‘Nine and Endemol Shine takes its obligations in respect to the health and well-being of the participants of this program extremely seriously. All participants have access to the show psychologist during filming, during broadcast and once the program has ended,’ a spokesperson said.

‘Nine also have an additional service for participants should they like or need further individual and confidential psychological support.

‘This service gives participants access to psychologists who have been specifically engaged to support those involved in the program in relation to their experiences.’

‘This service is available to all participants for as long as they need it, it does not end.’

The topic of the mental health of reality stars recently shot into the public consciousness after Love Island UK host Caroline Flack took her own life in February.

Caroline, 40, was found dead in her North East London apartment with a coroner’s inquest concluding the cause of death was suicide in August.

She is the fourth person linked to Love Island to have killed themselves.

‘I have worked on jobs from magazine editorials, fashion e-commerce websites to Instagram content,’ she states in her biography on TheRight.fit website.

Earlier this month, Bella publicly slammed allegations she was an aspiring actress who once dreamt of moving to LA to further her career.

‘I’ve never moved to LA, I’ve never wanted or tried to be an actress in Australia, never wanted or tried to get work as an actress in LA and certainly am not acting on the Bachelor,’ she wrote on Instagram.

Without naming names, she claimed that people had tried to ‘fabricate’ stories about her in order to feel ‘relevant’ and ‘important’.

During an anonymous Q&A session on The Bachelor earlier this season, the other contestants surprised Bella with a question about her influencer career.

They asked her if she was on the show to get more followers, and she replied that she already had enough followers and was only interested in Locky Gilbert.

Locky was also asked if Bella was his ‘favourite’. He responded by saying that he didn’t have favourites and was still getting to know everyone.

Married At First Sight: Michael Goonan ‘wants Stacey Hampton back’

married at first sight michael goonan wants stacey hampton back

Former Married At First Sight couple Stacey Hampton and Michael Goonan recently rekindled their friendship.

But it appears the 28-year-old businessman hasn’t quite got over his ex-‘wife’, as a source tells Daily Mail Australia he is secretly hoping they will reconcile.

‘They’re good friends now, but Michael wants her back,’ the source said on Monday.

Claims Michael Goonan 'wants his ex girlfriend Stacey Hampton back' after her plans to relocate to Melbourne to 'start a family' with her new man were revealed. (Pictured together)

‘Michael doesn’t approve of her new relationship and is doing everything he can to try and get Stacey to visit him in the Gold Coast,’ they added.

It comes just days after Daily Mail Australia revealed that Stacey was planning to relocate from Adelaide to Melbourne to pursue her new romance.

‘Stacey’s head over heels for her new man, and I have never seen her happier,’ a source close to the mother of two said last week.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia on Monday, a source close to the couple has claimed Michael is hoping to reignite his romance with the 27-year-old blonde bombshell

‘She’s already started to pack her bags and she’s ready to get on the first flight out once border restrictions are lifted,’ they added.

Last week, Stacey and Michael proved they had put their differences aside by catching up for lunch in Adelaide.

Their friendly reunion came after Michael had made a public appeal on Instagram for her to give him another chance – as mates.

Earlier this month, he shared a throwback photo of the former couple in happier times and wrote: ‘So publicly Stacey. Wanna be my friend again?’

The millionaire’s plea to Stacey came after his break up with fellow Married At First Sight star KC Osborne in July.

KC blamed their break-up on Michael’s unwillingness to change his ‘playboy’ ways.
