He has been playing DS Steve Arnott for nearly a decade.
And Line of Duty star Martin Compston said he is desperate to return to the show so he can get a much-needed haircut.
The actor, 36, told the One Show on Monday he also wants to shed some lockdown weight before taking to the role again.
Eager: Line of Duty star Martin Compston said he is desperate to return to the show so he can get a much-needed haircut
He said: ‘Well, I’m in dire need of a haircut and I’ve also got a few lockdown pounds I need to lose before we get back.
‘We’ve got a definite date that we’re working towards but there’s no point announcing it because the situation’s so fluid, and it can change daily, so hopefully we can get it done before Christmas.’
The Scottish star said the new pandemic filming measures will make things on set ‘completely different’ but he is eager to start again.

Discussing necessary alterations in order to keep the film studio coronavirus-safe, he explained: ‘I think there will be changes.
‘I mean there’s going to massive changes off camera just because of the protocols and the social distancing, how many people can be on set, no congregating, people off-camera wearing masks. It’s going to be a completely different feel.
Martin also teased storylines for the upcoming sixth series, which saw filming halted in March because of Covid-19, as he insisted that ‘the scripts are so good!’
He said: ‘In terms of the changes… we really wouldn’t want to compromise the scripts, the scripts are so good, and people are so loyal to the show, there would be no point coming back if we’re going to compromise quality.’
Tease! Martin teased storylines for the upcoming sixth series of Line of Duty, which saw filming halted in March due to Covid-19, as he insisted that ‘the scripts are so good!’
The show’s writers are notoriously tight-lipped when it comes to storylines, and so when quizzed about whether there is, as rumoured, a ‘massive bombshell’ at the end of episode four, Martin teased: ‘Well there’s a few before that as well…
‘But just because I don’t have script five, there’s a big, big question at the end of [episode] four.’
When asked, Martin confessed that he’s not watched any of the Line Of Duty re-runs which are currently being aired on BBC at the moment.
Nope! Appearing on The One Show, the actor admitted that although season one is being the rerun on BBC One at the moment, he can’t bring himself to re-watch early episodes
He revealed: ‘Well no, because I have a fear of those woolly cardigans that Jed put me in for the first series. No, it’s hard watching yourself back, and for me it’s the fear…
‘Because there was a big fear of going into such a high profile job, and doing a different accent and being up against these wonderful actors, so it would be hard to watch it back.
‘But I have some great memories of it, I’ve never laughed so much on a job as I did on series one.
‘We were a very close bunch very quickly and had some great nights out, but in terms of filming it’s being about ten years now so it’s been a long time.’
Earlier this month Line of Duty showrunner Jed Mercurio revealed bosses are hoping that series six will be wrapped by the end of this year.
The acclaimed writer revealed that BBC bosses are currently working to get production back up and running again, with the hope that a sixth series could air in 2021.
Filming for Line of Duty was suspended back in March at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, with fans eagerly awaiting the next series as they hope to finally learn the identity of the elusive ‘H.’

The Block: CHEATING scandal as ‘Dirty Harry’ sneaks in during lockdown
The Block’s Harry Pavlou was recently accused of sneaking into the building site when the contestants were supposed to be at home during the COVID-19 lockdown.
And the 57-year-old, who is competing on the show with his daughter Natasha, admitted on Monday to snooping around on set to ‘take some measurements’.
While the interstate couples were back home, Harry was within walking distance of the construction site in Brighton – and his decision to discreetly work on his reno has sparked a cheating scandal.
‘I got sprung!’ The Block’s Harry Pavlou (pictured left with his daughter Natasha) admits to sneaking on set during the Melbourne lockdown to ‘take some measurements’ before being caught
‘We live not too far from the site of The Block, and having that time to reflect, I decided to change what we were doing with the room upstairs, so I dropped by to take some measurements,’ Harry explained to TV Week.
‘I was only there for probably half an hour but I got sprung! The senior producer saw me. I tried to hide but it didn’t work.’
Other contestants were ‘disappointed’ in Harry after they found out he’d visited the set, with SA couple Daniel and Jade Joyce taking it the hardest.

‘If anyone did have an issue they should have come and talked to me about it. But no one came and talked to me,’ he said.
Following the scandal, he has now been nicknamed ‘Dirty Harry’ – but he has ‘owned it’ rather than being offended by the moniker.
Production on The Block was suspended in March before resuming with COVID-safety precautions in May. It was during this lockdown that Harry snuck on set.
Caught in the act: Harry said he went to the site to take some measurements and tried to hide from a senior producer before he was discovered

The father-daughter duo tied with Sarah and George, while Luke and Jasmin tied in first place with Jimmy and Tam on 29 points.
Daniel and Jade finished third on 28 points.

Meeting James, 33, at the pub after his run-in with the reality star, Pete said: ‘I bumped into Chloe, it was f*****g awkward. But she was smiling.’
James replied: ‘She misses ya, she loves ya. I know Chloe she would never hear a bad word said about you and you’re the same.
‘You had a lovers tiff’, before he awkwardly added: ‘not a lovers tiff, friendship tiff’.

Chemistry? After James’ comment and the pair agreeing to go to couples’ therapy, viewers flooded Twitter raising theories Chloe, 35, and Pete, 31, were more than BFFs
MailOnline has contacted Pete and Chloe’s representatives for comment.
Fans of the show took to Twitter after the interaction. One wrote: ‘See James let that slip “lovers”.’
Another viewer added: ‘Come on it’s a lovers’ tiff. A friendship where feelings were caught or maybe a FWB situation that became more than that’.
‘When are Pete and Chloe going to swallow they’re pride and admit there’s more than friendship between them’, tweeted a different fan.
‘Omg can these two get together already please’, another chimed. ‘What did Lockie say sorry?,’ another fan wrote.

Earlier in the episode Chloe and Pete finally shared their first chat.
Pete kick-started the tense conversation by asking if there’s ‘anything’ Chloe would like to say.
Chloe responded: ‘Not really, I don’t wanna be rude in front of Peggy [Pete’s dog], but you were a bit of an a***hole.
‘Towards the end of our friendship I felt like you started dismissing my feelings and … are you going to look at me or are you going to look at the bush?
Not impressed: Chloe called Pete an ‘a***hole’ during their first chat after falling out eight months ago earlier on in the episode
‘I feel like you were dismissing how I felt a lot, I’ve confided in you, I’ve told you everything and told you all my secrets… and I know I’m a lot.
‘I know I can be clingy and I can be jealous that is who I am, so if you don’t like those things then we can’t be friends cause I’m not going to change, I am who I am.’
Pete then tried to interject, telling Chloe to ‘hold on, hold on’, but to no avail as she continued to explain how she was feeling.
Defiant: Pete listened as Chloe said: ‘I know I can be clingy and I can be jealous that is who I am, so if you don’t like those things then we can’t be friends cause I’m not going to change’
‘No, I’m getting to my point,’ she told him firmly. ‘Obviously when the pandemic happened I just thought “omg I need Pete, I need to talk to Pete”.’
Pete then asked his former close pal, ‘so why didn’t ya?’ with Chloe replying she ‘didn’t know if you would be there even if I did reach out’.
He then asked her the ultimatum: ‘Do you want to be friends then or civil?’, to which Chloe said after a prolonged pause: ‘Friends’.
Having it out: Chloe accused Pete of ‘dismissing her feelings’ during the confrontation
They later met up at a bar. Chloe said: ‘I’m really glad that we broke the ice, obviously we were having a bit of stand off.
‘The thing is when I see you, it’s just you and it’s familiar and all of the things I’m p****d off about go away. In reality you did p**s me off but I don’t want to do it again.’
Pete told her: ‘I don’t want to do the rowing.’
Chloe said: Maybe we got so close. It felt like you were treating me different to how you were treating other people.’
Pere admitted: ‘I probably treat the people closest to me worst and you know that,’ before suggesting the pair go to couples’ therapy.
Smiling with glee, Chloe said she ‘would love that’ because he would be able to understand her perspective.
TOWIE continues on ITVBe at 9pm on Wednesday.
