Love Island star Jack Fowler has revealed his ancestors were slaves.

The reality personality, 24, took to Instagram on Wedesday to share an enlightening post about his family history and his own experiences with race.

As he posed alongside his dad in a sweet snap, he penned a lengthy caption, in which he spoke about his  ancestors and racism, in the wake of the Black Live Matter movement following the death of George Floyd in the US last month.

‘Here’s me and my dad. My grandad was one of the first hundred to arrive just after the Windrush on the RMS St Helena from a very small island called Saint Helena in the South Atlantic that has a population of 4,000 people.

‘My Nan shortly followed and then they had my dad who was born and raised in London. My dad met my mum, who was a white British East Londoner, when he was 12, and as my dad reached 34, my older brother was born followed by me.

‘We were both born and raised in east London. Growing up with a dad who’s a man of colour was a powerful insight into what racism is really is…

‘Because my dad is black, I was educated from a young age about the slave trade as my ancestors were slaves on their home island, Saint Helena.’

He shared details of his ancestry after a statue of slave trader Edward Colston being torn down in Bristol amid the Black Lives Matter protests.

The star went on to detail the racism he has personally experienced due to his father’s skin colour and explained how he’s been treated differently.

Jack went on to reflect on the racism he had faced because of his dad’s skin colour, explaining that he knows he was treated differently during his football career.

He wrote: ‘The experiences that my dad had growing up being a man of colour in school and throughout adulthood have been taught to me.

‘There have been times where I’ve been treated different because of the complexion of my dads skin. An example is during my young footballing life where I was treated differently as soon as people knew that my dad was black.

‘I was confused at the time but quickly learnt and became aware of what was happening. It made me feel frustrated but I understood that my dad is a black man who has been through feeling this way all of his life.

‘I feel that it’s my responsibility to share this story with you because I expect that I’m not the only one who has a white skin complexion but has parents of colour…

‘I love the black culture and it hurts to still see that even in 2020, black people are not being treated equally. I feel as a white looking mixed race man, I’ve experienced many moments of white privilege.

‘It’s times like these that we should treat people of all colour, religion and walks of life equally.’

In a touching conclusion, Jack wrote: ‘I’m proud of my roots. Always have been always will be and I will always speak up and stand against racism.’

During his appearance on Love Island in 2018, Jack revealed his heritage and admitted his accent often confuses people.

While discussing his heritage Jack explained: ‘Well, where I’m from, I’m actually half English and half St Helenian.’

He met with a puzzled look from his date Laura Crane, and continued: ‘Which, exactly. That’s the face that everyone pulls, right… So, it’s one of the most remote islands in the world, in between South Africa and South America.

‘So there’s a bit of a twang there. I was raised in east London. So yeah, people get thrown by my accent.’

The tiny tropical island is only 47 square miles and is one of the world’s most isolated islands, with the nearest land mass – Angola and Namibia – more than 1,200 miles away.

The volcanic island is Britain’s second-oldest overseas territory and its small number of inhabitants are mainly descended from Europeans (government employees and ex-soldiers serving in the local regiment), Chinese travellers (from about 1810) and slaves (from Madagascar and Asia, with a few coming from Africa from 1840 onward).

St Helena is in fact where the British government determined to exile Napoleon Bonaparte, the first emperor of France, in 1815, and is where he later died in 1821.

Joel Courtney has gotten married.

The Kissing Booth actor tied the knot with his ‘best friend’ Mia Scholink – who he got engaged to in February – at an outdoor ceremony in Phoenix, Arizona, on Sunday.

‘I am just so thrilled to be married, the actor told People. ‘It’s one of those things where as much planning and as much anticipation goes into the day, I’m so excited to be married to my best friend.’

She wore a white lace dress with her hair in a half-up style and he had on a tuxedo.

The 24-year-old star’s parents are likely to be thrilled by the union because they have known 23-year-old Mia’s family since before their children were born.

He explained: ‘My parents knew Mia’s parents before either one of us were born.

‘My dad did some web development work for her dad’s business, and they met through church and by the time Mia and I were born, we hung out for three or four years running around in diapers and play dates – not just us, but our siblings.

‘There are multiple photos where all five of the Scholink kids and all four of the Courtney kids are sitting around a table eating sandwiches and we’re all under the age of 14. It was so cool.’

However, things didn’t turn romantic for the couple until 2015, but the romance was short-lived before they decided to give it another go last year.

Joel explained: ‘We reconnected in 2015 and started dating in 2017. We dated for a year and we broke up for a little bit of time and then started dating again in 2019 and it moved really quickly after that.’

When they got engaged on Valentine’s Day, Scholink shared two photos of the couple kissing, all while showing off the bride-to-be’s engagement ring.

‘ENGAGED to my best friend!!! Can’t wait to marry you,’ she wrote in the caption.

‘I like it, so I just had to go and put a ring on it,’ Courtney wrote, along with a number of hashtags before adding, ‘Stay tuned! Sooooooo much more to come!!!’

Scholink’s post included pictures of the couple showing off the engagement ring.

Courtney couldn’t resist taking to Instagram again to gush over his fiancee.

‘Like I said, so much more to come!!! This woman right here, lemme tell you a lil bit about her,’ he captioned another snap of the couple staring into each other’s eyes while showcasing the engagement ring. ‘She is kind, patient, hysterical, forgiving, so beautiful she makes my heart stop, honest, and joyful. I love you @mia_scholink and I am so blessed to have you as my fiancé.’

Courtney’s Kissing Booth co-star Joey King was among the people who offered their well-wishes. ‘CANT WAIT TO BE THE RING BEARER!!!!!!!!!!! No but for real, I’m so happy for you two, you’re going to build the most beautiful life together. Cheers to your love,’ King wrote.

While Joel’s fans may be disappointed that he’s off the market, they had some good news recently after Netflix confirmed that not only is there a third Kissing Booth movie on the way, but it’s already been filmed.

Joel said: ‘We filmed two and three at the exact same time.’

His co-star King added: ‘It was the hardest secret to keep… In one day we’d be filming both.’

frankie bridge insists her husband wayne is not doing dancing on ice

Frankie Bridge has revealed her husband Wayne will not be appearing on this year’s series of Dancing On Ice, despite recent reports saying he had joined the show.

The former footballer, 40, was said to be gearing up to don his skates in January but Frankie, 31, told MailOnline the show is a big time commitment he can’t do right now.

Speaking as part of her ambassador role with Atopia’s Month of Moderation, Frankie said: ‘No, I don’t think [he’ll be doing it]. He’s actually really good at ice-skating. Annoyingly, he’s good at everything.’

While Frankie has a background in dance from her years as a member of The Saturdays and as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, she doesn’t think she’d be any good on the ITV series.

She said: ‘I have the fear! Wayne does not have the fear. We’ve been ice skating with the kids sometimes and I just found it so difficult. He came to the ice rink with me a couple of times and was skating backwards and doing all this stuff.

‘I don’t know, it’s a big time commitment and I think the difference between Dancing On Ice and Strictly is that I love Strictly and I had always wanted to do it.

‘It’s nerve wracking and you get to learn something new but with Dancing On Ice, it’s a little underplayed because you have to learn to dance and skate and you have to be so brave, there’s so many injuries. I don’t think I could do it.’

Stars who have signed on to compete on next year’s series include Myleene Klass, Denise Van Outen and Jason Donovan.

Wayne, who made 36 appearances for the England national team between 2002 and 2009, retired from football in 2014.

Asked if he misses the game, Frankie said: ‘I think he probably does miss it. He played for so long and for such a long age, he really enjoys being at home with the kids and having more family time.

‘I think he mainly misses the banter and hanging out with the other guys, he misses that side of it more.’

The couple, who are parents to Parker, six, and Carter, five, became viral sensations during lockdown as they entertained their social media fans with their humorous TikTok dance videos.

Frankie told how the couple are both dedicated to fitness but they still let themselves cut loose every now and then.

She said: ‘We generally don’t work out together because normally one of us has the kids and we have quite different ideas about what a workout is. Wayne likes to punish himself whereas I quite like to enjoy myself and do what needs to be done.

‘We do try to be as healthy as possible but we still go out for dinners and have a drink and we have chicken burgers and we’re not strict.’

Asked if her children are aware she was in a famous girlband or that their father is a former footballer, Frankie said: ‘They have no idea. They know we’re on the telly sometimes but I think they think everyone’s parents are on the telly sometimes.’

Frankie added whether either of her children will take after her in musical ability remains to be seen, saying: ‘They can both find a beat and they’ve both got rhythm. My oldest has just started playing the drums, but who knows if he’ll keep that up.’

Speaking about cutting down on alcohol for Atopia’s Month of Moderation, Frankie said: ‘It’s about being a bit more mindful, not saying you can’t ever drink again, but think about it, and you’ll feel fresher the next day. It’s about finding the balance and what works with you.’
