byron bay is bursting at the seams coastal town struggles with influx of celebrities and tourists

Byron Bay is increasingly becoming a hotspot for tourists and celebrities alike due to its laid-back culture, beautiful beaches and A-list locals.

But it appears the coastal town in northern New South Wales is struggling to keep up with the influx of newcomers arriving from big cities.

Locals tell Daily Mail Australia that a combination of factors – including poor infrastructure, COVID-19 and the Hollywood spotlight – has made Byron Bay a less desirable place to live.

Byron Shire has a population of close to 30,000, while the town of Byron Bay has a population of about 9,000.

With limited facilities in the area for its usual population, many services and businesses are busier than ever before.

Some gyms are no longer signing on new clients, in part due to COVID-19 capacity restrictions, but also due to overwhelming demand from new arrivals.

Locals say they are now waiting much longer for appointments at hair and beauty salons as locals and visitors compete for bookings.

Traffic has also become progressively busier.

A taxi driver told Daily Mail Australia last week there were less than 20 cabbies in town, and the phone lines often have to be turned off when it’s too busy.

Locals say there are just a handful of Uber drivers in the area, resulting in delays and inflated fares.

In the past, Uber drivers from the Gold Coast would work in the area, but Queensland’s border closure put a stop to that.

Ray White real estate agent Matthew McCormack says the market is the strongest and most competitive it has been in five years.

‘It’s cut-throat at the moment, you’ve got to have your cash ready to go,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.

With interstate and international buyers focusing on Byron, properties are apparently being snapped up sight unseen or via Zoom inspections.

‘The council is not very proactive with developments, and that’s preventing people from building here,’ Mr McCormack added.

The area has also seen an increase in A-list residents, with Chris Hemsworth arguably starting the Byron Bay celebrity real estate trend.

The 37-year-old Thor star relocated to the area from Los Angeles in 2014 with his wife of 10 years, Elsa Pataky, and their three young children.

They now reside in a $20million mega-mansion in the area, with Chris’ brother Liam Hemsworth also a local resident.

Chris and Elsa’s home is situated on 4.2 hectares, and boasts six bedrooms, a game room, gym, steam room, media room and a 50-metre rooftop infinity pool.

Earlier this year, it was revealed fellow Hollywood heartthrob Zac Efron had relocated to Byron Bay in March, at the beginning of lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The 32-year-old actor reportedly has no plans to return to Los Angeles any time soon, after extending his tourist visa from three months to a year, and shopping around for property in the area.

Other famous faces who now call Byron Bay home include Isabel Lucas, Elyse Knowles, Shelley Craft, Angus Stone, Olivia Newton-John and Socceroo star Tim Cahill.

Meanwhile, Carrie Bickmore owns a $3million holiday house in the area, with Hollywood superstar Matt Damon also believed to have a holiday home there.

Nicole Kidman’s latest TV project has also taken 60 holiday homes and rentals off the market for six months, he added.

The Oscar winner is filming Nine Perfect Strangers in the region, and the production is expected to inject millions into the local economy and create hundreds of jobs.

There are three separate productions underway in Byron at the moment, attracting further cast and crew to the region.

She gave birth to her third child just a few month ago.

And on Sunday, Lara Worthington (née Bingle) showed off her incredible post-baby body while out for a stroll with her dog.

The model-turned-businesswoman, 33, looked positively radiant as she hiked in the Hollywood Hills alongside her two boys and her puppy.

Lara enjoyed the fresh air as she held tightly onto the dog while soaking up the California sunshine on the brisk walk.

The statuesque stunner wore a long-sleeve blue t-shirt which flaunted a hint of her midriff. She paired it with blue tights.

She finished her outfit with a pair of black Adidas shoes.

Lara accentuated her flawless skin with next to no makeup. She wore her blonded tresses back away from her face.

It comes after the beauty modelled a tight black bodysuit earlier this month. Taking to Instagram, she posed with a black gym ball in her hand.

Lara stretched her athletic physique in another snap, and showed off her flexibility in the images.

The pair, who are also parents to sons Rocket, four, and Racer, two, are yet to reveal when exactly their baby was born.

Lara had confirmed her pregnancy in November, telling Vogue Australia: ‘I’m having a boy, early next year. It’s my third boy and we’re all very excited and very happy.

‘I think any addition brings joy and happiness to the family, but more so when you can share it with the other boys. It’s such a boy’s club in my house!’

mariah carey reveals she made a secret alternative album while making her 1995 album daydream

Mariah Carey on Sunday revealed she made a secret alternative album in a collaboration with the group Chick while she was making her 1995 album Daydream.

Carey, 50, took to Twitter with the musical tidbit as she continues to promote her new memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey.

‘Fun fact: I did an alternative album while I was making Daydream Eyes, the Grammy-winning singer said. ‘Just for laughs, but it got me through some dark days.’

She added an excerpt from the book going into detail about the previously-unknown recording.

‘Here’s a little of what I wrote about it in #TheMeaningOfMariahCarey,’ she wrote. ‘Love-you gesture S/O to my friend Clarissa who performs the lead w/ me as a hidden layer.’

The Vision of Love artist said she enjoyed the change of creative pace with the work.

‘I actually started to love the songs,’ she said in the book excerpt. ‘I was playing with the style of the breezy-grunge, punk-light white female singers who were popular at the time.

She continued: ‘You know the ones who seemed to be so carefree with their feelings and their image. They could be angry, angsty, and messy, with old shoes, wrinkled slips, and unruly eyebrows, while every move I made was so calculated and manicured.’

The mom-of-two – who shares twins Moroccan and Monroe, nine, with ex-husband Nick Cannon – said that performing in the different genre was a welcomed creative respite from the pop/R&B stylings of the Daydream album.

‘I wanted to break free, let loose, and express my misery – but I also wanted to laugh,’ she wrote. ‘I totally looked forward to doing my alter-ego band sessions after Daydream each night.’

Daydream would go on to be a massive hit, spawning smash singles like Fantasy, Always Be My Baby and One Sweet Day.

The Meaning of Mariah Carey, is out on September 29, while she’s slated to release a new album called The Rarities on October 2.
