narelda jacobs says blackface facilitates a negative stereotype of black people

Indigenous journalist Narelda Jacobs has shared her thoughts on blackface after an old clip resurfaced of Daryl Somers doing the offensive act in the 1980s.

In the controversial footage, Daryl performed Louis Armstrong’s What A Wonderful World in blackface alongside Kiwi jazz singer Ricky May on a 1988 episode of Hey Hey It’s Saturday.

Speaking about the clip on Tuesday’s Studio 10, Narelda said that blackface ‘facilitates a negative stereotype of black people’.

The 44-year-old also referred to an incident in 2009 in which a comedy troupe dressed up as the Jackson Five while in blackface for a Red Faces segment.

American singer Harry Connick Jr was a guest judge on the episode. He gave the performance a score of zero and said that he never would’ve appeared on the show if he had known that it would involve blackface.

Referencing the incident, Narelda said: ‘When [Harry] called it out, it shocked people in Australia, because we probably weren’t used to being called out for such things.

‘Had we known then what we know now, nobody would have been in blackface.’

She added: ‘What’s really heartening is when people acknowledge that they had done the wrong thing.’

Daryl issued an apology to Harry at the end of the live segment at the time, saying: ‘I think we may have offended you with that act and I deeply apologise on behalf of all of us.

What is blackface?

Blackface is a form of theatrical make-up used by non-black performers to represent a caricature of a black person.

It was prominently used in American minstrel shows in the 19th century.

Minstrel shows usually featured white performers in blackface doing comic skits of black people. The performances often depicted black people in negative and stereotypical ways.

Both blackface and minstrelsy are now considered outdated, offensive, and racist.

‘Because I know that to your countrymen, that’s an insult to have a blackface routine like that on the show, so I do apologise to you.’

Harry responded by saying that he wouldn’t have appeared on the show if he’d known about the segment.

‘I know it was done humorously, but we’ve spent so much time trying to not make black people look like buffoons that when we see something like that we take it really to heart,’ he said.

‘I feel like I am at home here and if I knew that was going to be part of the show, I probably, I definitely, wouldn’t have done it.’

On Tuesday’s Studio 10, Narelda also addressed comedian Magda Szubanski’s history with blackface.

The journalist praised Magda for giving a ‘very heartfelt apology’ last year after an old clip of her doing a skit in blackface in the early 1990s resurfaced online.

the bachelors laura byrne reveals how she kept her pregnancy secret for 20 weeks

The Bachelor‘s Laura Byrne and Matthew ‘Matty J’ Johnson managed to keep news that they were expecting a second child secret for 20 weeks, or five months.

And on Saturday, Laura, 31, revealed just how she managed to keep her pregnancy under wraps for so long.

On Nova’s Matt, Sarah and Matty J show, host Sarah McGilvray asked Laura: ‘You are one of the most papped people in Sydney! How did you keep it under wraps?’

'It was pretty easy really!' The Bachelor's Laura Byrne revealed this week how she kept her pregnancy secret for 20 weeks. Pictured: Matthew 'Matty J' Johnson, Laura and their daughter Marlie-Mae

‘It was winter, it was lockdown, it was pretty easy really, I mean baggy T-shirts and stuff,’ Laura replied.

‘A soon as it was getting warmer, I was like we might have to announce this as I don’t want to be going for walks wearing jumpers in the middle of summer.’

‘You’ve effectively been shackled to the bedroom for the last 20 weeks,’ Laura’s fiancé Matty said.

‘Alrighty! You don’t need to tell them everything that’s going on!’ Laura joked.

Thank you lockdown! Laura said the COVID-19 pandemic and wearing 'baggy' clothes helped her conceal her baby bump for months. She is pictured with fellow Bachelor contestant and podcast co-host Brittany Hockley during her recent holiday in Byron Bay

On Thursday, Laura and Matty announced that they’re expecting their second child together.

‘I reckon we’ve kept this little beach ball under wraps for long enough….. Half way to number two,’ Laura wrote in an Instagram post at the time.

‘A big shout out to @matthewdavidjohnson for his contribution,’ she joked.

cheer star gabi butler shares heartbreak over the arrest of co star jerry harris

Cheer star Gabi Butler took to Instagram on Friday and shared her heartbreak in an emotional response to the stunning arrest of her friend and former teammate, Jerry Harris.

The FBI arrested Harris in Chicago on Thursday and charged him with producing child pornography. According to federal court records, the 21-year-old is accused of contacting an underage boy on social media and trying to entice him ‘to produce sexually explicit videos and photos of himself’ and send them to Harris.

‘Like most of you, I am shocked, dismayed, and deeply saddened by the recent news concerning my friend and former teammate Jerry Harris,’ Butler began in her lengthy statement.

Butler confessed she has been crying uncontrollably since learning the news of her friend’s arrest and the allegations levied against him. She also shared how she’s still ‘trying to wrap my head around why something like this could happen.’

‘To be clear, although I have been a close friend and teammate with Jerry, I was never aware of anything like what he has been accused of taking place,’ the 22-year-old cheerleader added.

‘I believe the protection of children is more than important than ever in today’s world and absolutely do not condone any actions that bring harm to a child.’

She concluded: ‘Issuing a statement like this hurts my heart more than any of you will ever know. As a Christian woman, the only thing I know to do is pray for all involved and the world we live in. My heart is broken.’

About an hour after her initial statement, Butler shared about being the victim of sexual abuse as a child and how she knows all too well ‘the pain of experiencing this type of abuse and the difficulties it can create for life after such trauma.’

She confessed to being ‘broken to pieces’ over the situation, and then made a plea to those who may be feeling tempted to approach a child in a sexual way.

‘Please seek major psychological help,’ she wrote before adding, ‘This type of behavior only ruins lives and damages everyone around you. We must do better. We must protect our children.’

In a third post, Butler shared her shock over how her ‘best friend’ could do such a thing, and then addressed Harris directly about confessing to any wrongdoing.

‘One thing I will always respect about you Jerry… admitting your wrongs. It takes a lot of courage to come forward instead of trying to hide it away,’ she wrote.

Thursday’s arrest came just days after 14-year-old cheerleading twin brothers in Texas filed a lawsuit alleging Harris solicited sexually explicit photos from them for a year and asked one of them for oral sex.

Harris, who became famous for his positive attitude and eccentric personality in the 2020 Netflix docuseries Cheer, appeared before a U.S. Magistrate Judge later on Thursday but did not enter a plea. Harris was ordered to be remain detained until a hearing on Monday that would determine if he could be released on bond.

Harris also allegedly admitted to soliciting explicit photos from dozens of other underage boys and engaging in a sex act with a 15-year-old at a cheer competition.

The six-part series, Cheer, followed the nationally ranked 40-member Navarro College Bulldogs Cheer Team from Corsicana, Texas under the direction of coach Monica Aldama, as they prepared to compete in the National Cheerleading Championship held annually in Daytona Beach, Florida.

He released his new song and music video, Holy, in the early minutes of Friday.

And just hours later, Justin Bieber headed out in West Hollywood for a meet and greet, and watched as a large group of fans danced to the song in-front of a firehouse.

The 26-year-old pop star kept his distance from the group as they performed but did pose maskless with the large group despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Sorry hitmaker looked stylish for the outing as he donned black slacks with a white short-sleeve textured shirt that he left un-buttoned revealing a simple white tank underneath.

He paired the look with grey and white Nike sneakers, a green cap with a red and yellow emblem reading ‘butter,’ and a gold watch.

As he watched the group from the edge of the sidewalk, he pulled a black face mask down to his chin.

As the group danced, Justin flashed up a peace-sign with his fingers as he rested against a light post.

The meet and greet, and accompanying dance routine, appeared to be filmed for a project Justin is working on.

After the performance, the Canadian-born singer greeted the large group and posed for pictures.

Despite local regulations limiting gathering of large groups over 10 people, more than a dozen fans were present and posed in a tight group with the singer.

Though, at one point the singer did pull up his mask for a photo, after standing in incredibly close distance with those who had theirs down.

In his new music video for Holy, directed by Colin Tilley, Justin stars, as a struggling oil miner who is laid-off and evicted, while his on-screen love interest Ryan Destiny, a nurse, finds out her beloved patient died.

The new song reunites the Sorry singer with his I’m the One collaborator Chance the Rapper, who also appears in the video.

Justin’s new video appears to be at least partly inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic, as his character is laid-off due to a ‘global situation.’

While his song seems to be inspired by his relationship with wife Hailey Bieber, who he initially after just months of dating in 2018.

‘On God / Runnin’ to the altar like a track star,’ he sings. ‘Can’t wait another second.’

Then things take a turn for the worse, as the music stops, Justin and his co-workers gather around to be informed the plant is shutting down due to a ‘global situation.’

As the song resume, the lyrics continue to seem to be personal to the Never Say Never hitmaker ‘They say we’re too young and / The pimps and the players say, “Don’t go crushin” / Wise men say fools rush in / But I don’t know.’

The release of Holy marks a ‘new era,’ for Justin as he tweeted ‘New era. New single. It begins,’ while promoting the song.

Justin first teased new music was coming on September 11, writing ‘one week’ on all of his social media accounts sending fans guessing new music was coming on the 18th.

‘See you at the premiere. It’s a movie @ColinTilley. #HOLY with @chancetherapper’ Bieber – who boasts 415.6M social media followers – tweeted.

Justin’s onscreen leading lady is played by Grown-ish star Ryan Destiny, who famously won a 2011 singing contest to attend the red carpet premiere of his concert film Never Say Never.

Justin last released his fifth studio album, Changes, on February 14 which debuted at the top of the Billboard Hot 200.

The album became Bieber’s seventh number one, making him the youngest to accomplish the time at 25-years-old. The record was previously held by Elvis Presley at age 26.

Changes spawned his Billboard Hot 100 number two, Yummy, and he was expected to tour the album from May to September with Kehlani and Jaden Smith, though dates were scheduled to 2021 due to the pandemic.

For additional album promotion he also starred in the Justin Bieber: Seasons, 10-episode documentary series on Youtube where he discussed the pressure he had early in his career to be successful.

Prior to his fifth studio album, he last released Purpose in 2015 and toured from 2016 until 2017 before ending tour early to focus on his mental health.  After a very long break from music, he returned to the stage for surprise performance at Coachella during Ariana Grande‘s headlining set in April 2019.
