Neighbours star Annie Jones reveals the heartbreaking reason she put her career on hold

Neighbours star Annie Jones has revealed the heartbreaking reason why she turned her back on her successful acting career after leaving Neighbours in 1989.

The 53-year-old chose to step away from the spotlight to look after her late mother, Elizabeth, who battled Alzheimer’s disease and died in 2016.

For two decades, she turned down job offers that could have taken her to Hollywood – but she told The Mirror on Monday she had ‘no regrets’ about her decision.

‘I think you learn from the stuff that life throws at you. That’s what it’s all about,’ said Annie, who believes that looking after her mother made her a ‘better person’.

She added: ‘Anyone who has had anything to do with Alzheimer’s or dementia will know what it’s like.

‘It’s heartbreaking, seeing someone disappear before your eyes.’

Annie’s mother, who was based in Melbourne, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 1994, five years after her daughter left Neighbours.

On Monday, Annie revealed that she would be returning to Ramsay Street as a series regular.

She had famously played Jane Harris, better known as ‘Plain Jane Superbrain’, during the show’s glory years from 1986 to 1989.

‘Jane is returning to her old neighbourhood and bringing with her an insight into what her life away from Ramsay Street has been like for the past 30 years,’ Annie said in a statement.

She added: ‘Audiences will learn more about her family life, as fans are introduced to her daughter for the first time.’

Of course, it’s not the first time Annie has been welcomed back on Ramsay Street.

Earlier this year, she surprised viewers when she appeared in a guest role for the soap’s 35th anniversary.

Neighbours airs weeknights 6:30pm on 10 Peach

She isn’t shy when it comes to talking about her love for the finer things in life.

But eliminated Big Brother housemate Angela Clancy has now revealed she isn’t as high maintenance as people think, as her husband of 15 years, Damian, proposed to her with her a $250 ring.

Revealing that she ‘loves her husband’, the 38-year-old recalled her proposal as she addressed swooning male members of her new fan base who were asking for her hand in marriage.

Angela said: ‘There’s a lot of men asking for my hand in marriage. I’ve been married for 15 bloody years, and I love my husband!’

Incorrectly giving the value of her ring at first, Angela said: ‘I got engaged with a $250,000 ring. I’m not doing it again [marriage].

‘I love that man, so stop asking me for my hand in marriage! We can be friends, but I’m not going to get married to you!’

Realising her mistake, Angela quickly uploaded another Instagram Story, saying: ‘My ring is not $250,000, it is $250. I’m very smart. I thought I’m going to get married, so why not get a cheap ring, and then have a fantastic wedding!’

She advised her followers to do the same, stating: ‘If you want to get that man to marry you, go for the cheapest ring so you can have a fabulous wedding and then buy the most beautiful house!’

Angela married Damian when she was in her early twenties, but it’s understood they met years earlier when she moved to Australia from Kenya at 17.

They are doting parents to two children, Callum, nine, and Bella, five.

When they first started dating, she had never made her own bed or cooked for herself because of her privileged upbringing in the ‘Beverly Hills’ of Kenya.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, Angela revealed that she’s never owned a credit card nor ever had to worry about money thanks to her lavish lifestyle growing up.

Big Brother sees all, but he doesn’t always share it with viewers.

And evicted housemate Marissa Rancan claims there was a tense confrontation between herself and Daniel Gorringe that never went to air.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, the ’80s aerobics icon said the formal AFL player confronted her to set the record straight about rumours in the house.

Marissa’s strategy to become a double agent backfired spectacularly on Monday’s episode, and her argument with Daniel was part of the fallout.

Chad Hurst was venting his frustrations about Marissa to Daniel when he decided to disclose what the 61-year-old had said about the sportsman behind his back.

‘You know what else old mate was saying about you? “What kind of 27-year-old mopes and cries about a video call from his ex-girlfriend,”‘ he said.

Ouch! Chad told Dan that Marissa had made a jibe about his emotional response to being reunited with ex-girlfriend Ana Cannon via a video call in the house

This was a reference to how Dan had become emotional earlier in the season when he was briefly reunited with his girlfriend, Ana Cannon.

‘I’m sparked up now,’ Daniel said – but what wasn’t shown on Monday’s episode was him going straight to Marissa for answers.

‘At the end of the day, Dan came up to me and said, “Did you say this about me?” and I said, “Yes I did, Dan,”‘ Marissa said.

She added: ‘People are just saying whatever they want to say to make somebody else upset or to get rid of someone and to stay in the game.’

There are now only nine housemates left vying for the $250,000 cash prize.

Australia will vote for a winner next month during a live finale when there are only three contestants remaining.

Speaking from her Essex home, the TV personality was every inch the doting mother as she rocked baby Orla to sleep in an adorable frilly cream romper.

The proud parents sat relaxed on their sofa as Danielle introduced fans to her first YouTube video since welcoming their baby girl.

Orla was born on May 26 at 4.30pm weighing 8lbs 11oz after a 72-hour labour at Broomsfield Hospital in Chelmsford.

In the eight-minute video, which has garnered more than 45,000 views, beaming Danielle revealed ‘she’s here’ and even told how tiny Orla has her mother’s feet.

Danielle said: ‘This is baby Orla Mae Edney. Her name is Orla and her middle name is Mae but a lot of people think it is Orla-Mae, don’t they?’

Tom added how ‘everyone does’ get the name wrong after revealing that her moniker was inspired by Strictly Come Dancing star Ola Jordan.

The former TOWIE star explained how she gave birth 12 days after her due date, May 14, and spoke of how she was ‘ready to pop’ six weeks before she ‘actually did’.

She said: ‘I did everything. We had curry, spicy curry – we had two of those. We had pineapple – apparently if you eat the core of pineapple and a lot of it that can bring on labour.

Danielle revealed how she first thought her waters has broken but had accidentally ‘wet herself’.

Tom said: ‘Yeah we went for a walk Saturday afternoon and she jumped in the car like, ‘my waters have broke’, and made me touch the leggings and they were damp.

‘I was like, “Yeah the waters have broke” but no the waters hadn’t broke. It was definitely wee.’

Danielle said: ‘Because of coronavirus, Tom couldn’t be with me so I was in hospital on my own.’

In a candid video walking through the hospital, Danielle said: ‘I have been induced. I am two centimetres dilated but my cervix is still quite far back so it needs to get softer and brought forward a little bit more.’

In the incredible footage, Tom, who said he ‘ended up down the war zone at one point’, exclaimed ‘yes Danielle, she’s here’ as the midwives passed baby Orla onto her mother’s chest.

Danielle said: ‘All I remember is her eyes so open. Like I thought she was going to be like her eyes shut but her eyes were just staring – she looked straight at me.’

Last month, Danielle celebrated her first four weeks of motherhood by sharing an adorable snap of baby Orla wearing a pretty lace-trimmed dress.

The TV personality gushed ‘And Just Like That Your 1 Month Old My Little Darling Orla’ (sic) in the caption to her sweet post.
