Shirley Ballas has detailed how she came to lose her virginity.

The Strictly Come Dancing judge, now 60, was 16 at the time, and was engaged to her then-ballroom partner Nigel Tiffany.

The pair were at Pontins holiday camp in 1976 when they consummated their romance in one of the chalets, with Nigel’s parents perilously nearby.

Shirley writes: ‘We first got intimate together on a dance trip to Pontins – who said romance was dead?

‘We weren’t intending to tell his parents, but they accidentally found out when they unpacked his dance bag back at home and out fell the condom wrapper. So embarrassing! They were furious with both of us, properly bent out of shape by the whole thing.

‘They told me they planned to tell my mother, but I managed to get in first with a quick phone call to Wallasey. Unsurprisingly, my mother didn’t bat an eyelid, checking quickly that I’d been ”sensible enough to use protection”. It takes more than that to shock her!’

Shirley also revealed Nigel was ‘a 10 in bed’!

The pair didn’t get married but he is her financial adviser and they are still great friends.

He came to watch her on Strictly in 2018, sharing a snap of them together and captioning it: ‘My first fiancé, engaged when we were 16, and still my best friend, my financial adviser.

‘Such an amazing man who has done so well in life. He came along to Strictly to support me.

‘Grateful to have been friends for 42 years. So many amazing memories. Cheers Nigel.’

Shirley met Nigel in her mid-teens and moved to North Yorkshire to partner with him at the age of 15. They moved down to London when she was 17 but their romantic and ballroom partnership ended when Shirley switched to pair up with  dancer Sammy Stopford.

'Absolutely beautiful': This week, she spoke about Strictly's first ever same-sex couple. She said the coupling will be 'absolutely beautiful'

She also became romantically involved with him and they wed in 1980. They divorced in 1984.

A year later, Shirley married Texan dancer Corky Ballas, residing in Houston, Texas, with their son Mark, now 34, who is also a pro dancer.

Shirley and Corky split in 2007. She is now dating actor Danny Taylor, 47.

This week, she spoke about Strictly’s first ever same-sex couple. She said the coupling will be ‘absolutely beautiful’.

Former boxer Nicola Adams, 37, is set to become the first celebrity contestant in the programme’s history to be paired with a woman when the show returns.

Talking about the upcoming series, which launches on 17 October, Shirley told Reverend Richard Coles, who appeared on the show in 2017, on his BBC Radio 4 Saturday Live show that it will be ‘absolutely beautiful’.

Shirley also discussed Graham Norton’s recent comments where he said same-sex pairings will be ‘muddy the waters’ for the judging panel.

She said: ‘I’ll be judging movement to music, footwork, characteristic of what’s going on within the dance and spacial awareness on the floor. So I don’t see it as some people see it.

‘I really think people have to look at this with one mind because I think it is going to be absolutely beautiful.’

Shirley added: ‘I’m not a judgmental person because I have been judged all my life.’

The ‘Queen of Latin’, who broke her ankle in the the summer, added that despite the injury repairing well she was not ‘too optimistic yet about dancing’ on the show.

Elsewhere during the radio interview, Shirley discussed taking over former head judge Len Goodman’s role in 2017.

Talking about the trolling she received, the professional dancer said: ‘The first year was very difficult. I still remember someone saying, “She’s got a chest like a Seville orange, it looks like it has been eaten by a thousand slugs. Die you b***h!”

She added: ‘My mother told me to take everything a bit more with a sense of humour and I tried too do that and my son said, ‘Don’t try to fill Len’s shoes, put your own little slippers next to his.”

Exciting: Talking about the upcoming series, which launches on 17 October, Shirley, 60, told Reverend Richard Coles, who appeared on the show in 2017, on his BBC Radio 4 Saturday Live show that it will be 'absolutely beautiful'

‘I never tried to fill his shoes, there will only be one brilliant Len but I came with what I can do which is critiquing and being positive and guiding people through their journey.’

Shirley, who recently released her new autobiography Behind The Sequins, also said she is ‘not a glam person’.

She said her boyfriend Daniel Taylor, 46, loved it when she swapped her evening gowns ‘for a stripped down look with no make up, hair down and relaxed.’

It comes after the BBC defended having a same-sex pairing on this year’s series of Strictly Come Dancing last month after more than 100 people complained.

In a statement the corporation said the competition is an ‘inclusive show’ and they are ‘proud’ to have had same-sex numbers in previous series.

Former boxer Nicola, 37, is set to become the first celebrity contestant in Strictly’s history to be paired with a woman when the show returns in two weeks.

The BBC said: ‘Strictly Come Dancing is an inclusive show and is proud to have featured same sex dancing amongst the professional dancers in group numbers in previous series.

‘We have stated, in the past, that we are open to the prospect of including same sex pairings between our celebrities and professional dancers, should the opportunity arise.’

Trolled: Elsewhere during the radio interview, Shirley discussed taking over former head judge Len Goodman's role in 2017 and said she was trolled

‘Nicola Adams requested an all-female pairing, which we are happy to facilitate. The show is first and foremost about dance, the sex of each partner within a coupling should have no bearing on their routine.’

Last year male professional dancers Johannes Radebe and Graziano Di Prima performed a same sex routine during the show’s seventeenth series.

While the dance – conducted during a performance by pop star Emeli Sande – was met with an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response on social media, it prompted 200 complaints with TV regulator Ofcom.

Nicola recently spoke about her upcoming appearance on the show, saying she is ready to ‘break boundaries’ as part of first same-sex couple in show’s history.

Brooke has been campaigning against knife crime after her brother Ben was stabbed to death in June 2008 on a night out with pals. He was 16 years old.

Brooke – who played Kelly Taylor in EastEnders in the early 2000s – opened the exhibition highlighting the dangers of knife crime with other members of Ben’s family in attendance.

Crime minister Victoria Atkins also attended the launch, which saw Brooke speak to the guest about her tireless campaiging.

She said: ‘It’s 11 years to the week since we lost Ben and my family and so many other families have been tireless campaigning to try and make any kind of difference. The Ben Kinsella exhibition is my family’s way of carrying on Ben’s legacy.’

Brooke also explained that her inspiration for the exhibition from a letter Ben wrote to then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

She explained: ‘After Ben died we looked through all of his belongings to find any new memory we could of him, and we came across his English coursework book.

‘In that book was a letter that he wrote to the Prime Minister, then Gordon Brown, in which he said he was 16 and how worried he was about the state of our society and the violence amongst young people.

‘It was that letter that led to us creating this Ben Kinsella exhibition and it uses Ben’s story to educate young people on the choices and consequences of knife crime.

Enjoying a little ‘me-time’, the evening seemed to be a pleasant one as she indulged in a relaxing face mask while at home, writing ‘self-care’ over the snap.
