richard carings mayfair restaurant welcomes back diners with curfew busting express menu

Richard Caring’s iconic Mayfair restaurant reopened this evening with a curfew-busting express menu after the businessman blasted Boris Johnson‘s new lockdown restrictions.

34 Mayfair welcomed Londoners back today, debuting a menu featuring dishes from a new rotisserie grill, with lockdown-friendly opening hours.

However, perhaps the most noteworthy part of the reopening are two figures of Boris Johnson waving Unions Jacks positioned outside the restaurant, recreating his infamous zip wire stunt.

The dig comes after Mr Caring blasted the government’s decision to implement the curfew and criticised the PM’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

Diners will be able to view the new Boris figures when visiting the restaurant.

On Monday to Friday the restaurant will be open from 12pm to 9pm and on weekends it will serve customers to 5pm to 9pm.

It will also have an express menu available for diners, allowing them to eat three courses in under an hour – and ensure they are out of the restaurant before the 10pm curfew.

The menu comes with a range of options, with starters including Steak tartare with quail egg yolk, mains including Wiltshire free range chicken and desserts like salted caramel truffles.

The reopening comes after Mr Caring savaged the government’s coronavirus curfew.

Writing in the Daily Mail last week, he said: ‘The Government’s naive and ignorant decision to shut down pubs and restaurants after 10pm is going to create havoc in an industry which is already on its knees.

‘Far from helping to control the coronavirus, it could drive infection rates upwards. And it will cost countless jobs, quite probably more than a million, in the run-up to Christmas.

‘Make no mistake, this is a disastrous decision, taken by people who do not understand what terrible damage they are doing to the country.’

A few days later, Mr Caring, who is also the owner of the Ivy, Annabel’s and Le Caprice, said the situation for the country now looks ‘super bleak’.

He said: ‘We really are at a crisis point, with very little direction. I’m afraid it looks super bleak. There’s got to be a trade-off that stops the economy being damaged to the point of no return.’

Lily James had a flirtation with ANOTHER married man, Rebecca co-star Armie Hammer

Dominic West is not the only married man with whom Lily James has found her name intertwined.

Sources close to Rebecca co-star Armie Hammer and his wife say their marriage went into a nose-dive in the fall of 2019 after she found passionate texts and letters from a mystery woman who signed herself ‘Adeline’.

Adeline’s’ real identity is a mystery. But intriguingly, around the same time as the apparent dalliance, Armie was shooting the movie Rebecca, released on Netflix Wednesday, with co-star Lily James.

It was Lily’s intimate break with new co-star Dominic West in Rome this week that became the subject of frenzied international speculation after they were photographed in several compromising clinches.

And, while her Mrs. de Winter character in the adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s classic novel has no first name, James was referred to as Adeline on the movie call sheets and on her trailer, sources claim.

Adeline also happens to be the name of a character in another du Maurier novel, Hungry Hill.

This week sources on the set told the Mail that Lily James seemed to be flirting with her then very married co-star Hammer even though she knew the father-of-two was happily married to Elizabeth Chambers, 38.

At the time, former Downton star James’ relationship with her longtime boyfriend, actor Matt Smith, 37, had been cooling and observers said the beauty appeared to be ‘smitten’ with Hammer from the moment she laid eyes on him.

Said one source: ‘She was not subtle. And he was into it, no doubt about it. She was touching him constantly, giving him long smoldering looks.’

They added: ‘While he was filming, he chose to have weeks away in the English countryside instead of returning to see his family who were also in the UK. This is all very typical of him.’

Things finally came crashing down when Chambers discovered passionate messages between Hammer and the woman who called herself Adeline, the source said. Hammer also had a number saved in his phone under the same name.

Chambers was ‘devastated’, sparking a downward spiral that ended with Hammer and Chambers jointly announcing they were divorcing after 10 years of marriage in July.

Hammer and James began filming Netflix’s adaptation of the Gothic novel Rebecca in the UK in June of 2019, shooting in Devon, Dorset and Hertfordshire.

They added: 'While he was filming, he chose to have weeks away in the countryside instead of returning home to see his family, despite being away from them for several months at a time. This is all very typical of him'

When filming wrapped in August, Hammer and his family returned to Los Angeles but he returned to London alone weeks later.

Following his return to Los Angeles things really reached the point of no return, after Chambers discovered messages between Armie and ‘Adeline,’ the source said.

‘Elizabeth was devastated, heartbroken,’ they explained.

‘But they had 13 wonderful years together. She wasn’t about to throw away her marriage for one indiscretion.

‘She is an amazing woman. She doesn’t deserve this. You couldn’t ask for a more stunning devoted wife and she’s a great mom to their two little ones.’

Chambers decided to stick it out and work with Hammer on their marriage, even going to couple’s therapy. They had plans to renew their vows.

Chambers and Hammer were in the midst of their therapy when Covid-19 struck in mid-March. In April they announced their family was quarantining in the Cayman Islands – where Hammer had lived for five years as a child.

But the source explained that Hammer couldn’t take the close quarters and after two months, said he was going home to Los Angeles.

However, he went to Miami and accidentally sent Chambers a sexually explicit text from yet another woman that she knew wasn’t meant for her, the insider said.

That was the final straw for Chambers and on July 10, they both released an identical statement announcing their split, writing ‘Thirteen years as best friends, soulmates, partners and then parents.

‘It has been an incredible journey, but together, we’ve decided to turn the page and move on from our marriage.

‘As we enter into this next chapter, our children and relationship as co-parents and dear friends will remain our priority.

‘We understand this news lends itself to public dialogue, but in the interest of our children and our family, we’re asking for privacy, compassion and love during this time.’

According to divorce papers, they each listed a different separation date, which could impact the alimony Hammer has to pay out if they were indeed married less than 10 years. The pair married in May 2010.

Hammer claims he and Chambers separated in January, while she listed the separation date in July.

Last week, Hammer asked a judge to order joint custody, claiming Chambers isn’t returning home to LA and is choosing to stay in the Cayman Islands with Harper and Ford, according to The Blast

Chambers had filed for sole physical custody of their children, while Hammer requested joint legal and physical custody.

The Call Me By Your Name actor claims he hasn’t seen his children since July, as his legal team writes in legal papers: ‘As the coronavirus pandemic worsened in the United States, Elizabeth and Armie elected to stay with their children temporarily in the Cayman Islands where the pandemic appeared to be under greater control.

‘Armie returned to Los Angeles this past July, with a promise from Elizabeth that she and the children would follow shortly thereafter.

‘To date, however, Elizabeth and the children remain in the Cayman Islands and Armie has not seen the children in several months now.”

But sources tell DailyMail.com Chambers wants their children to remain in the Caymans because ‘it’s Covid free, the children can have their friends to play with and are in physical school living a normal life. Life in LA would be bad for them.

They quipped: ‘[Hammer] abandoned them in July. He left the family and now he wants part-time custody? So they return to Covid-infested LA? Not going to happen.’

Hammer personally wrote in the legal filing: ‘When I asked Elizabeth when she was coming home, however, she first told me that the airports were closed. Then I was informed through her attorneys that flights were merely limited but that she and our children would be back in Los Angeles on the first flight in October. It is now several weeks into October and they have not returned.”

“I believe we are both good, loving parents, and I have tried to be patient as I know that this is a stressful time for all of us who are dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. I have no doubt that Elizabeth and I both want what is best for our children.

“But I have not seen our children since July and I miss them deeply.’

Meanwhile, since the split, Hammer has been seen getting close with a bevy of beauties including Rumor Willis.

And although Lily has stayed quiet on the recent photos with West, an old interview resurfaced, where she spoke about ‘making mistakes’, ‘women having affairs’ and her ‘rebellious streak’.

Lily’s chat with Harper’s Bazaar was shot remotely with the magazine’s Commissioning Editor, Charlotte Brook, who spoke to the star over Zoom while she was in Somerset shooting The Pursuit Of Love with Dominic, where the cast and crew of the production were placed in a bubble together.

Even though shooting is over, the pair were spotted, along with their shared manager, enjoying an idyllic break in Rome where they shared an electric scooter and cuddled over lunch.

On his return to his family home in England a smirking West, far from finding his belongings on the drive, posed for kisses and cuddles with Catherine FitzGerald, his wife of ten years and the mother of his two children, as the couple insisted there marriage was rock solid.

In the video, the star said: ‘I feel I’ve rebelled in that way, I was always a rebellious teenager and I think it’s important to rebel in that way. I think criticism can be good if it’s constructive but I feel like if it’s attacking you or a vendetta that’s really difficult but I’m still learning….

‘I’m still figuring it out but I do think I can grow and develop a thicker skin. All that matters is those who love you.’

Speaking about Rebecca, she went on: ‘The character against Rebecca, she went against all norms as a woman, disobeyed her husband and had affairs was basically just brilliant and that was only in the 30s and people are afraid of women when they’re unleashed and women are warriors and that’s intimidating.’

On making mistakes, she continued: ‘I think I make mistakes all the time and I feel that’s what life’s about and I would never want to run away from a situation or be too scared to act…

‘I think it’s better to throw yourself in and if your instincts are right even if they’re misguided or if you’re open you can recover from your mistakes and learn from them’.

top chef warns british fishermen face a perfect storm this winter

Britain’s fishing fleet faces a ‘perfect storm’ this winter as demand from beleaguered restaurants and pubs plummets, chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall warned last night.

The new wave of Covid restrictions – including the 10pm curfew and bans on mixing with other households – has slashed orders of fish caught by the 4,000 boats in the UK’s small-scale coastal fleet.

These boats, which are typically under 30ft in length and are often owned by family businesses, supply premium fish such as turbot, bass and Dover sole, as well as crabs and lobsters, for restaurants across the UK and Europe.

Mr Fearnley-Whittingstall told The Mail on Sunday: ‘Fishermen and women are used to experiencing hard times but I worry that they face a perfect storm this winter and many could go out of business.’

His remarks come as UK Brexit negotiators are understood to have proposed a ‘sweetheart deal’ to French President Emmanuel Macron, under which the UK would take back control of its fishing waters on January 1, 2021 – but the French will be allowed to catch up to their current quotas until after the 2022 presidential election.

In return, Mr Macron would relax his demands for the UK to follow EU rules on state subsidies for businesses.

The aim is to protect the President from electoral damage at the hands of the powerful French fishing lobby.

After 2022, the UK says EU countries will have to request access to UK waters and set quotas on an annual basis. The EU is demanding a review every five years.

Mr Fearnley-Whittingstall added: ‘As more pubs and restaurants are closing or are restricted in their trade, fish prices start to drop rapidly.

‘Britain’s fleet of inshore fishing boats is a vital part of the fabric of this country and we must ensure these small family businesses… survive this incredibly difficult time.’

This map shows the extent of the UK's Exclusive Economic Zone - the waters Britain will take back control of after Brexit. At the moment the EEZ of every EU member state is merged into one large zone which can be accessed by fishermen from all over Europe

Industry sources say the fleet survived the first lockdown thanks to a jump in sales by fishmongers and via home deliveries.

But the new round of Covid restrictions and economic uncertainty is having a devastating impact on prices. The price of a small bass has fallen from £9 per kilogram to £6 per kg.

In March, at the height of the first wave of the pandemic, Rodney Anderson, a former director of fisheries at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and Terri Portman, a marine consultant, set up Call4Fish, a website where people can order seafood deliveries to their home.

‘The British public kept our fishermen going,’ Mr Anderson said. ‘But as demand falls again, there are skippers along the coastline worried about how they are going to keep their businesses afloat.’

Prince Andrew working out ‘how he can serve the monarchy’ as he maps out return to royal duties

Prince Andrew is working out ‘how he can serve the monarchy’ as he maps out a return to royal duties, it was claimed last night.

The beleaguered Duke of York stepped back from his duties ‘for the foreseeable future’ following his car crash Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis last year.

Since then, the 60-year-old has faced a series of controversies leading sources to brand him a ‘busted flush’ with a ‘toxic’ presence.

PRINCE ANDREW’S NAME WAS MISSING FROM MAXWELL’S COURT DEPOSITION

The Duke of York’s name was redacted from Ghislaine Maxwell’s court deposition documents.

Alleged victim Virginia Roberts Giuffre has accused Prince Andrew of having sex with her when she was 17 years old.

More than 400 pages became public on Thursday for the first time. Maxwell is currently in jail in New York awaiting a sex trafficking trial.

Speaking in her adopted hometown of Cairns in Far North Queensland, American Ms Giuffre said while she was happy the documents were unsealed,  she questioned why several names including that of the Prince were redacted.

She told ABC: ‘I feel very angry.

‘I don’t understand why we are protecting someone who hides behind mummy’s skirt and says “I didn’t do it”. His name should have been out there in the deposition.’

In the November interview, he attempted to ‘set the record straight’ by speaking about allegations that he had sex with 17-year-old Virginia Roberts three times, which he has strongly denied.

But he was widely condemned for showing a lack of remorse over his friendship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

The interview triggered days of catastrophic headlines and caused a string of businesses and charities to desert him.

In March, the Duke of York hired PR expert Mark Gallagher, nicknamed ‘the backroom fixer’, to deal with the fallout from the scandal.

Now, nearly 12 months on, it appears the Prince is determined to return and resume a public role at some point next year if legal issues with US authorities investigating Epstein, who died in prison, can be resolved.

A source told the Times: ‘The duke is spending time working out how he can serve  his country and support the monarchy in the future, and what else he might want to do with his life.

‘He’s locked down at Royal Lodge [his home on the Queen’s Windsor estate], thinking about his future service and public role. He has some clear thoughts.

‘He’s very sensitive to the public mood and acutely conscious that the public are the  most important stakeholder. He feels he has support from the family, very much so,  including all his siblings and his parents.’

Buckingham Palace, however, is said to have distanced itself from the claims, insisting there are ‘no plans to review’ the Duke’s status.

Any potential comeback would first have to be thrashed out in talks with the Queen, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge, palace officials and the government, according to the paper.

Another source insisted conversations had taken place but admitted the prospect of Andrew resuming an official role would be unlikely.

The Prince wore a face covering yesterday as he was seen for the first time since bombshell Ghislaine Maxwell files were released on Thursday.

It comes as Maxwell’s family claimed she has been treated ‘vindictively’ and ‘cruelly’ by prison guards – leading to a bid to free her from jail.

The Duke of York was seen talking animatedly with a passenger as he drove his Range Rover away from his home in Windsor this morning.

On Thursday, a 418-page document was released detailing how Maxwell admitted she had an intimate relationship with Jeffrey Epstein

In the bombshell 2016 deposition she refused to discuss their sex life as she dodged questions about orgies, underage girls and Prince Andrew.

Buckingham Palace was approached for comment on claims the Duke was mapping out a return to royal duties.
