Minister ‘tried to get Boris Johnson to back Charlie Elphicke’

A cabinet minister attempted to lobby Boris Johnson on behalf of disgraced former Tory MP Charlie Elphicke after he was charged with sexual assault, it was claimed last night.

Elphicke, who represented Dover from 2010 until last year, is understood to have asked ministers to help him.

In November 2019, having been charged in July that year after 20 months of police investigation, he allegedly tried to convince members of the Cabinet to raise his case with the PM.

One Cabinet minister reportedly lobbied Mr Johnson, telling him: ‘We should do something, Prime Minister, to help Charlie.’

The PM was said to be ‘initially sympathetic’ but was warned not to intervene by another Cabinet minister and so did not, it was reported.

Elphicke was last week convicted of three counts of sexual assault against two women in 2007 and 2016.

He is due to be sentenced later this year and could face jail.

‘Charlie went around saying that he had no idea why he was being investigated, so in a way there was a legitimate case for why people felt that he was being unfairly treated,’ a source told The Guardian.

‘He successfully lobbied one of Boris [Johnson’s] Cabinet ministers, who raised it and said: “We should do something, Prime Minister, to help Charlie.”’

The revelation raises fresh questions about how senior Conservatives handled Elphicke’s case when he was under criminal investigation, and the extent to which MPs continued to support him.

Elphicke lost the Tory whip in 2017 when the allegations were referred to the police, but was reinstated in December 2018 before a vote of confidence in the then-prime minister, Theresa May.

Tory MPs, particularly women, felt unease when Elphicke and Andrew Griffiths, a colleague who had the whip removed after being accused of sexually inappropriate conduct, were welcomed back into the fold, The Guardian reported.

‘There was a lot of thumping of tables with fists and I remember just looking across at another woman with a frozen look,’ one Conservative who attended a meeting of the 1922 Committee of backbench Tory MPs in December 2018 told the paper.

Griffiths, who sent lewd text messages to two young women, was cleared of wrongdoing by the parliamentary standards watchdog in September last year.

The Cabinet Office and No 10 were contacted for a response.

Climbers make their way across a narrow Alpine ridge at 11,800ft in France

climbers make their way across a narrow alpine ridge at 11800ft in france

Two hikers got terrifyingly close to a sheer drop while climbing across a thin ridge more than 11,000 feet up a French mountain.

Elin Skyttedal, who lives in Swedish capital Stockholm, and her partner bravely climbed the exposed Aiguilles d’Entrèves in the Mont Blanc massif of the Alps in France.

Heart-stopping 360 camera footage shows Ms Skyttedal using her hands and feet to climb across the top of the narrow rocky ridge.

The experienced climber fearlessly moves across the thin ridge despite the terrifying drop of 11,800 feet on either side.

Her partner is seen climbing further ahead on the traverse, with the mountaineers being joined together by a blue safety rope, the video shows.

Ms Skyttedal shared her jaw-dropping adventure on Instagram, where she regularly posts other nail-bailing snaps of her daredevil rock climbing.

She is also an avid skier and hopes to complete some more of the Alps’s 13,000 foot peaks, having already climbed across the Breithorn traverse.

Ms Skyttedal has also braved the popular Cosmique Arete climb, which is known for being an aesthetic ridge due to its orange granite.

But the climb demands a range of skills, including mixed climbing, rock climbing, route finding and abseiling.

The jaw-dropping footage of the daring climb was filmed using a 360 camera

The rocky summit of the Aiguilles d’Entrèves forms part of the frontier straddling between France and Italy.

The easiest way to ascend the mountain is using its north-east ridge from Col du Toule, which is a popular day-outing for many climbers.

The initial stage of the ridge is easier for climbers, with plenty of scrambling and opportunities to enjoy views of Mont Blanc.

But the ridge leading up to the summit is considerably more nail-biting as it runs along a knife-edge – not one to be recommended for those scared of heights.

The jaw-dropping footage was filmed on July 23 this year.

Prince Philip is ‘very disappointed’ by Meghan Markle’s failure to ‘support the monarchy’

prince philip is very disappointed by meghan markles failure to support the monarchy

Prince Philip is ‘very, very disappointed’ by Meghan Markle’s failure to ‘support the monarchy’ and her husband, a royal expert has claimed.

The Duke of Edinburgh, 99, who gave up his naval career to support the Queen, 94, when she ascended the throne in 1952, was ‘irritated’ when the Duchess of Sussex, 39, failed to do the same, according to Ingrid Seward.

Speaking to Sky News, the royal biographer said the elderly prince couldn’t understand why the former actress didn’t follow his example when she married Prince Harry, 36, in May 2018.

‘I think he’s very, very disappointed because I think he feels he gave up his naval career in order to stand by the Queen and help the monarchy,’ she said.

‘And why can’t Meghan just give up her acting career, support her husband and support the monarchy?

‘As he used to say to Diana, this is not a popularity contest, this is all of us working together.

‘He just cannot understand why she couldn’t support Harry and help him rather than wanting to have her voice.’

Ms Steward said Prince Philip didn’t want to be a part of the talks about the Sussexes’ future outside of the monarchy, which were held at Sandringham in January.

The Queen summoned Prince Charles and Prince William to the Norfolk estate for an emergency summit after Harry and Meghan announced their intention to go it alone and become financially independent.

Ms Steward went on to claim the Duke of Edinburgh doesn’t wish to get involved anymore since Prince Harry and Meghan officially stepped back from the Royal Family in March this year.

‘Of course, it irritates him hugely. And when they had the Sandringham Summit, Prince Philip was seen leaving the house very swiftly before they all arrived,’ she observed.

‘He simply doesn’t want to get involved anymore.’

According to Ms Steward, as far as Philip was concerned, Harry and Meghan 'had everything going for them: a beautiful home, a healthy son, and a unique opportunity to make a global impact with their charity work'. Pictured following the birth of Archie Mountbatten Windsor in May last year

Earlier this month Ms Steward discussed Prince Philip’s overwhelming sense of duty in a piece for the Mail on Sunday.

She said it ‘grieves’ him that many younger members of the Royal Family ‘do not appear to share his values’.

‘He has struggled greatly, for example, with what he sees as his grandson Harry’s dereliction of duty, giving up his homeland and everything he cared about for a life of self-centred celebrity in North America,’ Ms Steward wrote.

‘He has found it hard to understand exactly what it was that made his grandson’s life so unbearable. As far as Philip was concerned, Harry and Meghan had everything going for them: a beautiful home, a healthy son, and a unique opportunity to make a global impact with their charity work.

‘For a man whose entire existence has been based on a dedication to doing the right thing, it appeared that his grandson had abdicated his responsibilities for the sake of his marriage to an American divorcee in much the same way as Edward VIII gave up his crown to marry Wallis Simpson in 1937.’

On Monday it was reported Harry and Meghan could create a Netflix documentary with sensational home footage recorded during their departure from the Firm.

The couple signed a deal thought to be worth around $100 million (£77.9million) with the US streaming giant earlier this month.

Yesterday, speaking at the Fortune’s Most Powerful Women summit, Meghan said she pays no mind to public ‘flattery or criticism’ about her and hit out at the media for ‘misinterpreting’ remarks she has made in order to make them sound more ‘controversial’ or ‘inflammatory’.

father three sons hilarious reactions to their first time on the 50mph viper amusement park ride

A father from Illinois has recorded the reactions of three of his sons as they tried their very first rollercoasters.

Brian Prunty, who lives in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, has filmed three hilarious videos of his sons Mason, Tyson and Jack each trying the Viper ride at the Six Flags Great America Parkway, Gurnee, Lake County.

The videos were all taken in different years but each hilariously capture the boys’ reactions as they try out the 50mph ride.

All three of the boys’ reactions are played simultaneously to compare how they enjoyed the ride.

The earliest video is of Mason when he was eight in 2016, Tyson was filmed at the age of six in 2017 and Jack was six in 2019.

Mason seems to handle the ride the best out of the boys as he is seen smiling and looking around throughout the ride, even saying at the end: ‘I found the best way to do it. Do it like this, hold on!’

Tyson starts his clip by making faces at the camera while the rollercoaster begins its climb, but once the ride speeds up he begins switching between screaming and clenching his teeth in terror.

Jack, who was the youngest when he tried the Viper, clings onto father Brian’s arm as the ride goes round.

When asked at the end of the ride if he wanted to go on again, Jack replies confidently: ‘No.’

Speaking about the videos, Brian said: ‘All of these are the same ride, different years on The Viper at six flags in Chicago.

‘They have been on rides since, even Tyson likes rollercoasters and has even been on this one again since.

‘Unfortunately, it was closed this summer so Jack hasn’t had a chance to redeem himself yet.

‘We also have two other boys, the oldest son who I wish I had a video of his first ride and a 5-year-old who I will hopefully add to this video in a couple of years.’
