Bournemouth 1-0 Norwich: Arnaut Danjuma strike ensures Cherries stay unbeaten

Contrasting summers followed these teams’ relegations from the Premier League.

Bournemouth saw a long-serving manager depart, replaced by his assistant and prominent players Nathan Ake, Callum Wilson and others sold with nobody brought in.

Norwich kept faith in Daniel Farke and have managed to keep most of their Premier League squad together. Even Max Aarons, coveted by Barcelona, AC Milan and other members of European football’s elite, remains in yellow. Useful-looking reinforcements have been signed.

And yet it was Bournemouth who took the three points. Such are the vagaries of life back in the Championship.

Arnaut Danjuma, a player who flitted in and out of Eddie Howe’s team last season as he struggled with injuries, proved their match-winner with a goal of genuine class.

Norwich rallied strongly after half-time and created more but Bournemouth proved resolute. Steve Cook seemed to head away everything that came into the Cherries’ penalty area. They preserved their unbeaten league start while ending their opponents’.

But it’s early days yet and both clubs will surely feature in the promotion shake-up. Such is the rat-a-tat-tat pace of this division, defeats can quickly be remedied. Over 46 games, you’re bound to lose a few.

Long periods of the first half lacked the crackle you might expect from a meeting between two supposed promotion favourites. There was no shortage of neat – but safe – passing and some misguided attempts from both teams to play out from the back that only invited trouble.

The first chance of note went Bournemouth’s way, a sharp shot by Dominic Solanke that Tim Krul did well to beat away given a couple of yellow shirts were moving across his field of vision.

Down the other end, the engaged Onel Hernandez drifted in from the right and struck a powerful effort that Asmir Begovic turned aside for a corner.

Early blows exchanged, both teams soon lost momentum and the crowdless Vitality Stadium echoed with shouts of frustration.

Not least from Krul, who yelled at his defenders to close Bournemouth players down numerous times before Philip Billing chipped in a back post cross that was met by Jack Stacey whose header forced the Dutchman into a save.

It turned out to be a warning that Norwich didn’t heed. Bournemouth’s opener, on 35 minutes, was a lovely move and an equally lovely finish from Danjuma.

Stacey began things on the right touchline, playing a pass infield to Jefferson Lerma, who moved the ball on to Danjuma on the edge of the Norwich box.

His backheel completely wrong-footed Christoph Zimmermann and opened up space to sweep a low, left-footed shot into the bottom corner.

Running to a pitchside TV camera, Danjuma rolled up his shirt to reveal a ‘Stay strong Lloyd’ message presumably in reference to team-mate Lloyd Kelly, who has suffered another injury setback.

Norwich hadn’t been at their best. There were odd glimpses of attacking intent but most of their creative players were quiet in the first-half. Aarons showed his class with a cheeky flick but otherwise struggled for impact.

On the stroke of half-time, however, Teemu Pukki got to the byline and cut back to Lukas Rupp on the edge of the ‘D’. His sharp shot was saved well by Begovic to preserve Bournemouth’s just about merited lead.

Danjuma had a good chance to make his afternoon even better within seconds of the restart. Solanke’s scooped ball over the Norwich defence had the Dutchman in the clear but he skewed wide.

Solanke then drove forward through the centre but ignored two options in space to his right to shoot tamely.

Norwich’s players screamed for a penalty when Aarons went down under pressure from Adam Smith but referee James Linington waved away the appeals. With no VAR in the Championship, there was nothing else Norwich could do.

Moments later, Solanke headed over when well placed at the other end after more good work by Danjuma. That would have put the game to bed.

But that was a rare foray forward for Bournemouth after the break. Norwich were camped inside their half with Aarons and Hernandez to the fore as they started to create openings.

Kenny McLean looped a header just over the bar seconds before being taken off. Farke threw on Adam Idah and Jordan Hugill to boost the attack but the equaliser proved elusive.
