premier league warned by fan groups that the charity not ppv campaign will carry on

The Premier League have been warned by fan groups that protests against the £14.95 pay-per-view scheme will continue even if the fee is lowered, according to reports.

Top flight clubs agreed at a shareholder’s meeting to keep the controversial scheme for the next two rounds of matches with officials set to review the format at the next meeting on November 5.

Supporters have been boycotting PPV games and instead donating the £14.95 fee to charity with more than £300,000 raised so far.

Supporters have been boycotting the £14.95 games and instead giving the money to charity

Liverpool fans raked in £120,000 for their game against Sheffield United while Newcastle supporters donated £20,000 after their 4-1 defeat by Manchester United.

Fan groups told The Athletic that protests will continue, even if the £14.95 fee is lowered for forthcoming games.

‘It’s the principle, not the price,’ Alex Timperley of the MCFC Fans Foodbank said.

‘The Premier League can reduce it to £1 and we still wouldn’t stop the protest.’

Alex Hurst, chair of the NUFC Supporters Trust, added: ‘While the country remains under tier restrictions there should be a free-to-air arrangement, similar to that which was in place since the return of football in June.’

The decision to make matches which were not due to be broadcast on TV available through PPV on either Sky Sports or BT Sport has caused outrage among football fans who are still unable to attend games due to restrictions.

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville called for the £14.95 fee to be scrapped, claiming no fans are watching.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, Neville said: ‘It just needs scrapping. It’s gone. It’s finished. No one is paying, no one is watching, it’s done, it’s finished, get rid of it.’

Both BT Sport and Sky Sports have seen dwindling figures arriving to purchase the matches

Sportsmail understands, in the first instance the Premier League will explore the option of lowering the current price rather than abandoning the strategy altogether, with a new cost of £9.95 the most likely outcome.

There is a sense that the model is financially viable. Since its introduction during match week five, the Premier League have earned more than £5million.

Clubs were told there was an average of 39,000 paid subscriptions over the first nine PPV matches, totalling £5.25m, though a portion of that will go to broadcasters whose costs are £100,000 per match.

Three matches attracted fewer than 10,000 subscriptions and two games fell into the top bracket of 70,000 to 90,0000 viewers. That average was calculated before Brighton’s home draw against West Brom on Monday.

Antonio Rudiger back in from the cold as Frank Lampard hands Chelsea outcast a start at Krasnodar

antonio rudiger back in from the cold as frank lampard hands chelsea outcast a start at krasnodar

Chelsea fans found themselves doing a double take when Wednesday’s team to face Krasnador was announced, defender Antonio Rudiger returning to the side for the first time since the FA Cup final defeat at the start of August.

Sportsmail revealed on Monday that Frank Lampard was ready to re-integrate Rudiger into his first-team plans following heart-to-heart talks with the central defender.

The Germany international’s future under the Chelsea boss had appeared to be over after he was left out of the squad for six of the club’s first seven games of the season.

However, he has now been given a second chance, beginning with Wednesday’s Champions League game in Russia.

Rudiger looked certain to leave Chelsea in January, with Paris Saint Germain and Tottenham both interested in taking him on loan.

But a move never materialised and the 27-year-old stayed at Stamford Bridge and following constructive talks with Lampard, it is understood he will be involved in first-team matters with more regularity.

There was never an issue between manager and player – and with Rudiger staying at the club until at least January manager Lampard will now count on the former Roma man.

Lampard was satisfied enough with Rudiger’s contribution last week to name him as a substitute in the goalless draw against Manchester United on Saturday.
