dual grand national winner tiger roll targets early cheltenham visit after finishing sixth at navan

Dual Grand National winner Tiger Roll could race at Cheltenham next month in the Cross County Handicap Chase after starting the season with a sixth-place finish in a Flat race at Navan on Thursday.

Trainer Gordon Elliott said a pre-Christmas return to Cheltenham was a good option for the 10-year-old, whose priorities are a delayed tilt at a third victory in the Grand National after this year’s race had to be cancelled, preceded by a shot at winning the Cross Country Chase at the Festival for a third time.

Elliott, who runs Galvin in the Novices’ Chase as the track stages its first meeting of the season, said: ‘It was a good day out. Tiger Roll fell out of the stalls and was left 10 lengths, so, all things considered, we are very happy to finish sixth. He could now go Cheltenham in November for the Cross Country Chase.’

Tiger Roll ran in the race in 2018 when he finished fourth to Josies Orders.

After his sluggish start on Thursday, Tiger Roll stayed on in the mile and three-quarter race — less than half the distance of the Grand National — but was still beaten just under 30 lengths.

There were two winners on the Navan card for jockey Colin Keane, who has been installed by one bookmaker as favourite to be No 1 jockey to Aidan O’Brien next year. That position is currently held by Ryan Moore and he will try to win the final Group One race of the domestic season when he partners O’Brien’s Dewhurst Stakes runner-up Wembley in the Vertem Futurity Trophy at Doncaster tomorrow.

Enable was on Thursday ridden about for the last time by Frankie Dettori at Newmarket before she was transferred to owner Khaled Abdullah’s Banstead Manor Stud.

west ham fans can watch their clash against man city this weekend in a cinema half a mile away

Fans will be able to watch West Ham‘s clash with Manchester City from a cinema within walking distance of the empty London Stadium, as supporters continue to remain shut out from attending games.

The Premier League tie, set to take place on Saturday, will be screened in a number of Vue cinemas, including in the Westfield Stratford centre, just a few minutes’ walk from the stadium, as first reported by The Times.

The cinema will be able to admit more than 100 fans to view the game, with tickets priced at £6.99 each for the screening.

The screening highlights the inconsistency in rules allowing games to be shown indoors at cinemas while a limited number of fans are prohibited from attending the games, held in outdoor stadiums.

This contradiction has been raised by Tom Pendry, president of the Football Foundation.

‘This vividly illustrates the complete and utter nonsense of the situation. I intend to get a full debate on this in the House of Lords,’ he told The Times.

Games have been screened at cinemas this season but none have been shown at a a cinema so close to the venue.

Baroness Barran, a minister from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport has said it was ‘not the right time to make further easements’ with regard to allowing fans to return to games.

‘We are committed to getting spectators back in stadiums as soon as it is safe to do so. We will continue to work closely with a whole range of sports, including football, to understand the latest thinking that might allow spectators to return,’ she said.

Supporters who view the game in the cinema will be required to don face masks when not eating or drinking.

Culture secretary Oliver Dowden last week ‘accepted people’s frustration at the inconsistency,’ with government policy surrounding the attending of different events.

Yet Mr Dowden stressed that the decision to keep fans out of stadiums was taken on the advice of expert scientists.

In response to the #LetFansIn petition, which has garnered support from the Premier League and Football League, the DCMS said on Thursday morning: ‘We will take the earliest opportunity to look again at getting spectators safely back into stadia but this must clearly be done carefully against the prevailing health conditions.

‘The government is fully aware of the importance of getting spectators back and the financial consequences not to allow this from October 1.

‘The evidence received from the CMO (Chief Medical Officer, Chris Whitty) was very clear, at a time of rapidly rising infections. It was not the right time to undertake easements.’

Phillip Cocu’s exit from Derby is imminent and Wayne Rooney WILL be taking over at Pride Park

phillip cocus exit from derby is imminent and wayne rooney will be taking over at pride park

It is not just the remaining seven days of his Covid self-isolation that will have Wayne Rooney watching the clock in his Cheshire mansion.

The former England captain has been playing a waiting game since he joined Derby on an 18-month contract as player-coach last year, a complex deal which, as Sportsmail revealed last November, involved him being groomed as a successor to manager Phillip Cocu.

Cocu’s time in charge at Pride Park is almost up and could end as soon as Friday evening if his side lose the East Midlands derby against Nottingham Forest. Only the precise timing and cost of the Dutchman’s departure are to be determined.

Derby owner Mel Morris is understandably reluctant to commit significant funds to severance packages for Cocu and coaches Chris van der Weerden and Twan Scheepers, who all have almost three years left on contracts which entitle them to multi-million pound pay-offs. But he may have little choice if Derby suffer a sixth defeat in seven Championship matches.

The always hands-on Morris has increased his demands of Cocu in recent weeks — summoning him to breakfast meetings, asking for written reports of matches and planned training sessions — leading to speculation that the chairman is seeking to pressure him into walking away.

To complicate matters further, Derby are still waiting for the outcome of the EFL’s appeal against the decision of an independent disciplinary panel to clear the club of breaking the league’s financial rules. A final judgement is expected next month.

If that hearing goes against them, Derby could be hit with a points deduction which may effectively condemn them to relegation. This would have a significant impact on the club’s finances and the appeal of the manager’s job.

Rooney remains content to bide his time and not just because his potential exposure to Covid-19 will prevent him taking charge of training until the middle of next week. The 34-year-old has yet to complete his UEFA coaching badges so will need back-up from experienced coaches if he is appointed.

Liam Rosenior, the former Brighton defender, has made a positive impact since joining the coaching staff last year and already has his UEFA Pro Licence but Rooney is understood to be considering bringing in outside help.

His former Manchester United team-mate Darren Fletcher is due to finish his coaching badges imminently and is a close confidant, while Rooney’s former coaches at Old Trafford Steve McClaren and Mike Phelan have also been sounded out. Such is Rooney’s confidence at eventually getting the manager’s job that he was even discussing potential coaching options with senior team-mates.

Rosenior is sufficiently well regarded at Derby to be seen as a potential caretaker manager himself and could yet be asked to join Rooney’s staff.

The potentially negative look of appointing an unqualified white coach over a black coach of a similar age who does have the necessary badges has also been considered.

The club have unwittingly been dragged into race related controversies in the past, with Les Ferdinand making the point that young black coaches do not get opportunities such as that which Derby gave to Frank Lampard, Cocu’s predecessor.

The competition between Rooney and Rosenior is symbolic of a deeper tension at the club, with the uneasy relationship between the captain and manager at its heart.

While Rooney initially had a galvanising effect following his arrival from Major League Soccer last December, with Derby winning 11 of the 19 games he played, his impact has lessened this season other than scoring the winner in last month’s 1-0 victory at Norwich.

Senior staff at the club’s Moor Farm training ground have indicated that Rooney became disillusioned towards the end of last season and there have been repeated mutterings about his condition and commitment this season.

A 4-0 home defeat by Blackburn last month saw Rooney looking particularly off the pace, after which Cocu conceded he needed to be fitter, a statement which did not go down well with the player.

Cocu pushed hard to recruit senior players during the transfer window and forced through the bizarre signing of 34-year-old striker Colin Kazim-Richards earlier this week on a free, whereas Morris wants the manager to play talented academy products such as Jason Knight and Louie Sibley in the hope of adding to their transfer value.

Derby have won just two of eight matches this season with the tensions between leading personalities adding to the air of negativity which Morris will not allow to persist. One more defeat and the clock is likely to stop for Cocu.
