Arteta insists he feels ‘really bad’ for leaving Saliba out of Arsenal’s Europa League squad

arteta insists he feels really bad for leaving saliba out of arsenals europa league squad

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has suggested he regrets leaving William Saliba out of his 25-man Europa League squad.

The Spanish manager only has Shkodran Mustafi and Gabriel Magalhaes as fit and available centre-backs ahead of the fixture against Dundalk, with David Luiz joining Rob Holding, Calum Chambers and Pablo Mari on the sidelines in the weekend’s defeat to Leicester.

Fellow central defenders Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Saliba are fit but neither can be called upon after being excluded from Arsenal’s European squad, and in the case of the latter Arteta admits he is an option he would like to have had available.

‘I feel really bad for William Saliba,’ Arteta said. ‘Because we had so many central defenders, we decided to leave him out of the squad which was really hurtful for me to do.

‘I was hoping that Pablo would be back in two weeks but he had a setback and then we don’t have Pablo and we don’t have William when he’s fit and available to play.

‘But when you make those decisions, you can’t always think about every possible outcome.’

Saliba, 19, has yet to make his Arsenal debut after returning to the club this summer from his loan at Saint-Etienne.

He joined Arsenal from the Ligue 1 side in 2019 for £27million before spending last season on loan in France, but despite much fan excitement has had to bide his time while being assessed by Arteta and getting accustomed to England.

But Arteta added he is already seeing improvement from the France Under 20 international.

‘Yes, he’s in a much better place,’ Arteta added

‘He’s feeling a lot more confident around the place, his language is improving and he’s starting to understand much better what we’re doing physically.

‘He’s played a few games with the under-23s which he needed because he didn’t play any football in the last seven or eight months. Things are progressively getting better and better.’

Mesut Ozil, meanwhile, was the other headline omission from the Europa League squad alongside Sokratis and Saliba.

The 32-year-old was also left out of the Gunners’ Premier League squad for the season, a move which has caused further friction between the World Cup winner and the club.

Manchester United ‘enter race to sign highly-rated Ajax youngster Ryan Gravenberch’

manchester united enter race to sign highly rated ajax youngster ryan gravenberch

Manchester United have reportedly set their sights on signing Ajax’s talented midfielder Ryan Gravenberch – but face competition from Barcelona and Juventus.

The 18-year-old has been attracting interest from a host of Europe’s biggest clubs after emerging from Ajax’s famed youth academy to then star in Erik ten Hag’s first team.

And according to the Mirror, the Red Devils are now in the race to sign the highly-rated midfielder, whose playing-style has been compared to the United’s French maestro Paul Pogba.

The report goes on to claim that the Eredivisie club will be reluctant to cash in on one of their most promising talents just yet, given that Gravenberch recently signed a new three-year deal with the club back in June.

However, after starring in Ajax’s 1-0 defeat by Liverpool last week, a number of Europe’s elite have started keeping tabs on him while an offer could be on the horizon in the next two windows.

Gravenberch has enjoyed a fine start to life as a professional footballer for the Amsterdam club, having made 19 appearances for the club while scoring four goals and making three assists.

The teenager’s efforts on the pitch have already been recognised by a wide audience after he made the final 20-man shortlist for this year’s Golden Boy award.

Gravenberch faces competition from Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood for the award, with the winner set to be announced before the end of the year.

Should United win the race to sign Gravenberch, he would follow in the footsteps of Ajax academy graduate Donny van de Beek, who completed his £40million move to Old Trafford earlier this summer.

Van de Beek’s move to the north west of England may come as a warning to Gravenberch, given the fact that his compatriot has struggled to nail down a place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting XI as of yet.

Van de Beek did make a meaningful impact in United’s 5-0 demolition job of RB Leipzig on Wednesday but the Dutchman will need more minutes and consistent performances if he is to nail down a spot any time soon.

Khabib Nurmagomedov ‘let Conor McGregor fight go longer than Justin Gaethje’ as he liked American

khabib nurmagomedov let conor mcgregor fight go longer than justin gaethje as he liked american

Khabib Nurmagomedov ‘deliberately finished Justin Gaethje quickly rather than extend the punishment as he had done with Conor McGregor‘, insists the Russian’s coach.

Javier Mendez has made the remarkable claim that his fighter showed mercy on his UFC 254 challenger as he had respect for Gaethje.

Both Mendez and Daniel Cormier have said Khabib veered away from the armbar as he did not want to hurt Gaethje in front of his watching parents on Fight Island at the weekend.

And the American Kickboxing Academy coach went further, telling the Sun: ‘I gather Khabib likes Justin a lot because he finished him sooner than he would’ve with most people. He likes to punish people a bit, ground and pound them.

‘But Justin’s parents were there and he knew Justin wouldn’t tap and he didn’t want to break his arm in front of his parents.

‘Khabib purposely let Conor go longer, he purposely stood with him, he wanted to punish him.

‘Just because Conor went four rounds it doesn’t mean Khabib had a tougher time trying to finish him – Khabib wanted to punish Conor, he didn’t want to do that with Justin.’

Khabib, who emotionally announced his retirement after the fight having reached 29-0, will be remembered for his last three fights especially.

The submission win over McGregor came after a toxic build-up to their fight in 2018 and Mendez’s claim that Khabib was so driven to punish McGregor that he allowed the fight to last longer, is a fascinating one.

During the fight itself the Russian repeatedly spoke to his opponent while landing huge blows on the ground.

At one point McGregor even reasoned, ‘It is just business’, but Khabib was not satisfied even after the win and sparked a mass brawl by jumping over the cage to attack the Dubliner’s team-mate Dillon Danis.

The build-up to the Gaethje fight was far more respectful and the Dagestani clearly appreciated his opponent’s sportsmanship.

He walks away from the sport as the pound-for-pound No 1 and banked £4.6million plus bonuses and a share of the pay-per-view takings.

Mendez previously hinted that the retirement was an emotional decision and opened the door for the lightweight champion to return.

But the 32-year-old was adamant he will now hang up the gloves after promising his mother he would no longer fight on without late father Abdulmanap to guide him.

After touching back down in Russia, Khabib said: ‘Mission accomplished. What else is there to do? Make money? I’ll always be able to do that.

‘Everyone reacts differently. Of course Dana [White] wants me to continue fighting and generate revenue.

‘I can make money myself. I’m at the peak of my career but I made this decision and I think this is the best time for me to make it.

‘Not everyone can retire at their peak but I know that in a year, two or five, I’d have to face that decision again. I did enough in the sport to be considered the best.’
