allan saint maximin signs new six year contract that puts him in line with top earners at newcastle

Newcastle United have rewarded star player Allan Saint-Maximin with a bumper new six-year deal that puts him among the club’s highest earners.

Sportsmail broke the news on Wednesday morning that the winger was set to sign a new contract after he had demanded improved terms on the £45,000-a-week deal he agreed just 14 months ago.

Saint-Maximin felt that did not reflect his worth to the team – who have won just once without him in 15 Premier League games since his £16.5million arrival from Nice – but his new salary is in line with the likes of Jamaal Lascelles and Jonjo Shelvey, who earn around £70k-a-week basic.

There has been interest in the 23-year-old given his outstanding debut season in the Premier League and he has carried that form into this campaign.

Steve Bruce knows the importance of keeping him happy and healthy, and the head coach said: ‘We’re delighted to be keeping him – and he’s delighted to be staying.

‘He’s had an introduction now to what life in the Premier League is like and with Allan, the world is at his feet. He can go as far as he wants to go, because he’s got the talent to do it.’

We first reported in July that Saint-Maximin was frustrated that a new contract was not already on the table.

But the player said on Wednesday night: ‘I’ve played for a lot of clubs – Monaco, Nice, in Germany, but Newcastle, I feel like it’s my home. The supporters give me a lot of love, the coach too, and my partners on the pitch.

‘Everybody gives me love and when you have this, I feel it’s my home and I hope this stays my home for a long time.’

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has suffered a setback in his recovery from an ankle injury and will be out until December.

real madrid reveal latest footage from their 500m redevelopment of the santiago bernabeu

Real Madrid have released stunning new footage of work on their £500million redevelopment of the Santiago Bernabeu.

The LaLiga giants began remodelling the Bernabeu – which has been their home for 73 years – earlier this year and have already transformed its appearance after installing a new fixed and retractable roof.

A giant metal structure consisting of two trusses or fastened beams that run from east to west have been erected as part of the roof construction and will rest on the two new towers on the Castellana.

New footage released by Madrid on their Twitter page showed the long process of constructing their breathtaking new retractable roof.

Real Madrid are currently playing all their home games at the Alfredo Di Stéfano – where their reserve side play – while the huge renovation project continues.

The Bernabeu will also get a revamped facade to modernize its appearance and have a 360-degree video screen and a new seating section.

Plans to refurbish private boxes are also well underway.

Work was initially due to be done over the off-season, but those plans were altered because of the emergence of the coronavirus pandemic.

The full redevelopment is not expected to be completed for another 18-24 months with an original completion date set for October 2022.

‘We are facing one of the great projects of the future for Real Madrid, and, of course, it will be also for the city of Madrid,’ club president Florentino Pérez said back in April when the plans were unveiled.

‘The new Santiago Bernabeu stadium will entail an important improvement for the club, but also for its surroundings.

‘The new stadium will allow us to keep growing. It will allow Real Madrid to remain competitive in an increasingly difficult scenario in international football.’

Former-Wigan midfielder Jordi Gomez scores goal to rival Keemar Roofe and break Europa League record

former wigan midfielder jordi gomez scores goal to rival keemar roofe and break europa league record

It’s just a week on from his European wonder strike but Keemar Roofe has already been rivaled by none other than former Wigan man Jordi Gomez.

Roofe set the Europa League alight after hitting a scorching effort from his own half in stoppage time to confirm a crucial 2-0 victory for Rangers in Belgium, and it seems the competition is now producing world-beating goals on a weekly basis.

As Cypriot side Omonia faced PSV Eindhoven on Thursday evening, Gomez sensed his opportunity in the 29th minute after a team-mate was fouled inside the centre circle and the referee immediately awarded a free-kick.

The fouled player was still on the floor as the ball started rolling towards the path of Gomez

Using his experience, ex-Wigan star Gomez didn’t think twice before stepping up briskly to the ball and hammering it from his own half straight up and over the head of an out-of-place goalkeeper.

Measurements have shown the midfielder was some 54 metres out when taking on the effort, which showed no signs of slowing down as it plunged into the back of the net.

Yet huge question marks hang over whether the goal should have even stood, after the referee dictated the free-kick had been taken quickly and was therefore valid.

Replays shows the ball still slowly rolling following the free-kick incident, meaning Gomez was able to quickly step up and use the momentum to generate an extra burst of power.

Despite protestations from the Dutch side, the goal stood and PSV trailed until the 40th minute, when Donyell Malen found the back of the net to equalise.

It was Malen’s goal in the second minute of injury time at the end of the match that would break Omonia hearts and secure a 2-1 comeback victory for PSV.

Comparisons are now being drawn between Gomez’s effort and the piece of magic pulled off by Roofe a week ago.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has already made the bold claim that the strike was the best he has ever witnessed in a live game

Speaking to Sportsmail about his goal, the 27-year-old Roofe said: ‘I came on with about 15 minute to go, just to help protect a 1-0 lead really. My main focus was to be a release for the defence.

‘So I was dropping back, trying to be an extra body. The ball fell and I managed to get around it. All I’m thinking is, “Win the tackle, if I don’t, they’re in a good position”. I won the ball but it wriggled out. I ran through a second tackle. You don’t want to let the boys down.

‘But then another defender comes towards me. Okay, I’ll just nick it around him. In my mind I’m like, “Keep the ball. Keep the ball”. My plan was to run as far as I could with it.’

The congestion of defenders coupled with the rain-soaked pitch meant Roofe quickly made the snap decision to attempt to pick out the back of the net from an astonishingly long way out.

The rest, as they say, is history.

How Man Utd could line-up against Arsenal with Solskjaer’s rampant attack headed by Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford

how man utd could line up against arsenal with solskjaers rampant attack headed by mason greenwood and marcus rashford

MANCHESTER UNITED host Arsenal in the pick of this weekend’s Premier League action.

With little rest for either side, the two giants will go head-to-head on Sunday evening after midweek wins in Europe.

How Man Utd could line-up against Arsenal on Sunday
How Man Utd could line-up against Arsenal on Sunday

United battered RB Leipzig thanks to a Marcus Rashford hat-trick off the bench, while Arsenal cruised past Dundalk.

And Rashford is set to lead the line against the Gunners along with Mason Greenwood, who also scored against Leipzig after being recalled to the team.

Anthony Martial will continue his suspension for Sunday’s game at Old Trafford.

And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could therefore be tempted to send out his Man Utd team in a 3-4-1-2 formation.

David De Gea is set to keep Dean Henderson out of the team.

And Axel Tuanzebe – so influential against Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month – could return to a back-three.

Tuanzebe would likely partner up with Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire.

However, Solskjaer could opt to leave Tuanzebe out, with Lindelof, Maguire and Shaw comprising a back-three – although that would force the United captain out of his favoured spot on the left of the trio.

Playing a 3-4-1-2 allows Solskjaer to play three central midfielders – two deeper and one attacking.

With the centre-mid ranks easily United’s strongest suit, that could play to their advantage.

In this set-up, Scott McTominay and Fred would likely continue their impressive partnership in the deep tandem.

Bruno Fernandes will take the starting spot at No10.

However, Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek – who all played against Leipzig – will hope to sneak into Solskjaer’s starting XI.

In attack, Greenwood and Rashford could both start centrally with Martial still sidelined after lashing out at Erik Lamela in the 6-1 mauling against Tottenham.

Solskjaer could decide to send out his team in his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation.

But that might not be the best way to go against Arsenal – especially with Martial injured.

Solskjaer may decide to play Rashford and Greenwood on the wings with Cavani central.

Or Rashford could start in the middle with Greenwood and one of Juan Mata and Daniel James on the wing.

But, in order to get his best players out on the pitch, fans on social media have been crying out for a 4-1-2-1-2 formation.

In that scenario, Solskjaer could in theory play McTominay, Pogba, Van de Beek AND Fernandes – although that’s a smidge attacking against a side as dangerous as Arsenal.

Should the boss opt 4-1-2-1-2 is the way to go, it’s likely McTominay would play as the deepest of the central four.

Fred and one of Pogba or Van de Beek would play in the middle, with Fernandes at the tip of the diamond.

This formation would again allow Rashford and Greenwood to play in their strongest central role up front.

Man Utd welcome Arsenal to Old Trafford on Sunday November 1, with kick-off at 4.30pm.
