andrea pirlo dubs his juventus side as young and naive as federico chiesa was shown red

An angry Andrea Pirlo branded his Juventus team ‘young’ and ‘naive’ after they were held to a shock 1-1 draw against Serie A new boys Crotone on Saturday.

Pirlo warned his players that they need to show a better level of maturity after letting their standards slip and receiving a red card for the second time in three league matches.

Summer signing Federico Chiesa was given a straight red on his debut for a studs-up challenge on Luca Cigarini in the second-half of this disappointing result.

Andrea Pirlo called his squad ‘young’ and ‘naive’ after drawing 1-1 against Crotone on Saturday

Pirlo was without experienced heads Cristiano Ronaldo, Alex Sandro, Aaron Ramsey and Paulo Dybala for Saturday’s match and admitted their absence was felt.

‘Unfortunately, we went down to 10 men in the last two games because of our errors, but we are a young team that needs to work and there hasn’t been much time for that with so many internationals,’ he told DAZN.

‘Young players need to gain experience by playing in matches and it can happen that they make naive errors as part of the learning process.

‘We built a team with quality, but it is still a work in progress and needs time. The lads will learn through mistakes, unfortunately that also means taking a few risks in the early matches of the season.

‘We made a few mistakes in the timing of the press, but as I said, these things happen when we’re still getting the machine oiled. We only really spent half-an-hour on this tactical movement in training yesterday, so it will improve.’

Pirlo was without Ronaldo and also Weston McKennie after the pair tested positive for coronavirus on Tuesday while Sandro, Ramsey and Dybala are still out nursing injuries.

Saturday’s draw leaves Juventus in fourth place with eight points from their opening games.

One positive Pirlo took away from the game was that Alvaro Morata marked his second Juventus debut with a goal.

The striker tapped in from close range to equalise after being set up by Chiesa.

Up next for Juventus in Seria A is a home clash with Hellas Verona and Pirlo will be expecting a much better performance next weekend.

matteo guendouzi hints arsenal career is over after intense time and two good years

Matteo Guendouzi has hinted that his time is up at Arsenal and the Frenchman appears resigned to a permanent move away from the club.

He joined Hertha Berlin on loan from the Gunners during the transfer window having fallen out of favour under Mikel Arteta.

And the language used by Guendouzi when speaking about his time at the Emirates seemed to suggest he considers that chapter of his young career over.

The 21-year-old told Kicker: ‘I played over 80 games there and had a good, intense time there.

‘I learned a lot there in terms of sport and grew up there. It was two good years for me.

‘I also had a very good relationship with Mesut Özil, and Bernd Leno, both of them told me a lot of good things about the Bundesliga.’

Guendouzi is only on loan at Hertha for the season and still has two years remaining on his Arsenal contract.

He has not yet made an appearance for his new side having contracted coronavirus during international duty with France Under-21s and suffered with fitness issues.

Having signed for Arsenal from Lorient in 2018 for £8million he made a bright start and established himself in the side but things started to unravel this year.

Arteta immediately dropped the midfielder from the squad after the Maupay incident and he reportedly mocked the Brighton players about their wages in a 2-1 defeat.

Arsenal went on to win the FA Cup in August without the help of Guendouzi and later strengthened their midfield options with the deadline day addition of Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid.

Arteta’s side are currently 11th in the table having won three and lost three of their opening six games with Manchester United up next.

liam farrell wants to hear an angry james graham as wigan go for top spot v st helens scaled

LIAM Farrell hopes to hear one last blast of a fierce Scouse accent – that would mean James Graham is angry.

The Wigan star goes up against the St Helens legend in a regular season derby for one last time after his opponent confirmed he is retiring at the end of the season.

But after linking up with him for England, the back rower knows just how competitive Graham can be.

He also knows that when he is annoyed, his Liverpudlian twang gets even stronger and he hopes his ears catch it tonight with Super League’s top spot on the line.

Farrell, 30, said: “James is very passionate in what he does and is very vocal.

“And when he does get angry, his Scouse accent does get stronger!

“I’ve not heard that for a while but I’d like to hear it tonight. I’m sure he feels the same way about St Helens as I do about Wigan.

“We’ve a real good crack at going top and the ads are really keen for it. We’re more than capable of getting the win and going top.

“It would be a great time to go top as it would be ours to lose then.”

Wigan boss Adrian Lam admits Graham is the ‘ultimate competitor’ after working against him when he was involved with Australia’s staff.

But when given the choice, he would have the Warriors’ own retiring legend, Sean O’Loughlin – when asked which one he would rather have, he replied straight away: “Lockers.”

And he revealed just how close he came to moving to the NRL, adding: “I think he’d agreed in principle at one stage with Canterbury.

“That was at the height of his career and Trent Robinson, the great Sydney Roosters coach, considers him one of the best players to have ever played the game.

“I know he tried to get Sean a couple of times but he decided that wasn’t the path he wanted to take, though, but I wouldn’t swap him for the world.

“I coached against James when I was with Australia and he was outstanding. He had some special moments in Australia and has the respect of everyone over there.

“He’s one of Great Britain’s great front rowers over the past decade.”

Willian admits he is ‘learning a lot’ from Mikel Arteta at Arsenal

willian admits he is learning a lot from mikel arteta at arsenal

Willian insists he is learning a lot under Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta as he praised the Spaniard and his new way of playing he is adapting to.

The winger joined the Gunners on a free transfer in the summer after rejecting a new contract at Chelsea and has found adapting to life under his new coach challenging.

The Brazilian has not been able to make an impact since his two assists in the opening game against Fulham and is still waiting for his first goal in an Arsenal shirt.

Willian said he is beginning to get to grips with the demands of his manager but said it has been a steep learning curve.

‘It’s been a cool, new experience. I hadn’t worked with a coach with that mindset,’ Willian told Globo Esporte.

‘The positional game doesn’t mean that you have no freedom on the pitch, you have the freedom to move, but many times you have to respect the position, what the coach asks, the instructions, understanding that it’ll be better for the team.

‘It may happen that you don’t touch the ball and get frustrated, but Mikel always says that, wait a minute, the ball will arrive. I’ve been learning a lot.’

Willian missed Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat by Leicester last weekend with a calf issue but is back in contention for tonight’s Europa League clash with Dundalk after resuming training this week.

Arsenal got off to a winning start in Group B with a 2-1 victory over Rapid Vienna last week and will look to follow that up against their Irish opponents at the Emirates this evening.
