Arsenal and Sheffield United have unveiled a touching memorial to the late Metropolitan Police officer Matt Ratana – who was tragically shot dead inside a police station last week.

The 54-year-old was fired upon while preparing to search a handcuffed suspect who managed to smuggle a weapon into the custody suite in Croydon on September 25.

The shocking news was greeted with widespread shock from the sporting world, and both Premier League clubs have shared emotional tributes to Mr Ratana ahead of their clash on Sunday.

Several seats at the Emirates have been dressed with club shirts adorned with Mr Ratana’s name on the back flanking a Met Police uniform.

A joint message from the clubs read: ‘Sergeant Ratana served in the Hackney area between 2010 and 2015, and was the centrepiece of community policing.

‘Our condolences go out to his family, friends and colleagues.’

Chelsea new boy Edouard Mendy loving training alongside Petr Cech

Edouard Mendy says he has been studying Petr Cech, following the 38-year-old’s remarkable return to training.

Cech retired in 2019 and works as a technical advisor at Stamford Bridge, but has been working with Frank Lampard’s side and was included in their 25-man Premier League squad as emergency cover.

It has given new No 1 Mendy who, like Cech, joined Chelsea from Rennes, a chance to see the standards expected at Stamford Bridge first-hand.

‘It’s just an absolute pleasure to work with him every day. Training allows me to watch how he works and to analyse his game,’ Mendy said. ‘It’s a wonderful bonus for me.’

Cech will not be in the squad to face Manchester United on Saturday, despite injury keeping out Kepa Arrizabalaga. Mendy, who is set to start, is confident Chelsea can cope without the veteran this season. ‘We already have three very good goalkeepers and that should be enough,’ he said.

The Senegal international has overtaken Kepa and Willy Caballero but insists there is no tension within the squad.

‘Before my first match, Kepa wished me good luck. He never holds back if he thinks he sees things that I might have missed, just as Willy Caballero does as well. It’s great that we have a united team,’ Mendy said.

‘There was a unique situation here with the goalkeepers but it wasn’t something that had any role in my decision to come to Chelsea.’

Meanwhile, Lampard hailed Marcus Rashford for transcending football’s tribalism with his national movement to feed hungry children.

Lampard must find a way to stop Rashford on the pitch today, but hopes the 22-year-old England striker continues his campaigning off of it.

‘It’s been great to see young players with personality and a voice speaking up about things they care passionately about,’ said Lampard. ‘I absolutely commend him for that. There are a group of players now in the Premier League speaking out like he has. It has been a fantastic thing that is well appreciated.

‘He deserves credit for it, because even if you feel like you’re fighting for a good cause there will be many people quick to question it or be negative.’

Thiago Silva and Christian Pulisic are fit to travel to Manchester as Chelsea search for a balance between the creativity of their 3-3 draw against Southampton last Saturday, and the defensive solidity on show in a 0-0 against Sevilla on Tuesday.

‘A clean sheet always gives confidence,’ said Lampard. ‘But it’s very simplistic to say things were all wrong because we conceded goals in one game and all right because we didn’t in another.

‘We brought in six players looking to compete in the starting XI so I knew this would take some time.

‘It’s not perfect to have new players and no training time with them. But we’ll keep working.’

Solskjaer fights the corner of Mason Greenwood and insist he doesn’t have timekeeping issue

solskjaer fights the corner of mason greenwood and insist he doesnt have timekeeping issue

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has told Mason Greenwood that any ‘bad decisions’ will be highlighted now the teenage striker is a rising star at Manchester United.

Solskjaer admitted Greenwood had learned a harsh lesson following his expulsion from the England squad last month over a liaison with a woman in the team’s hotel in Iceland.

But the United boss defended the player’s professionalism on Friday after Sportsmail reported that Greenwood had been reprimanded over his time-keeping.

Having put the 19-year-old’s absence from the wins over Newcastle and Paris Saint- Germain down to injury and illness, Solskjaer said Greenwood could return to the squad when United face Chelsea at Old Trafford on Saturday.

However, he acknowledged that Greenwood is in the spotlight now and any indiscretions will come under more intense scrutiny.

Referring to the Iceland episode, Solskjaer said: ‘I think Mason learned a harsh lesson this summer, of course.

‘It’s the reality that when you do well at Man United you’ll be under the spotlight, whether it’s good or bad. The more bad decisions, the more likely you are to be followed.

‘When you play well you just keep yourself out of the limelight in that respect.’

Earlier this week, Sportsmail reported that Greenwood had been spoken to over issues with punctuality and ‘general tardiness’.

Solskjaer, as expected, mounted a robust defence of the player amid concerns over his discipline and, in particular, lateness, but Sportsmail understands that the teenager does have a timekeeping problem which has come to the attention of club officials recently.

The manager is understood to want to deal with the matter in private, while supporting the player in public.

Asked if Greenwood has made a target of himself, Solskjaer said: ‘You do when you play well. I’m not concerned at all with Mason making a target of himself because he came in, played fantastic and kicked on.

‘Yeah, he made a mistake with England. But he’s a fantastic boy to work with. We have a great record and tradition of bringing our players through. That means from early on you get good habits, we trust you, and you can express yourself. Mason has come through this programme.

‘He’s never, ever late for training, he’s never a problem on the training ground. I’ve seen some ex-United players talking about him, and they don’t know what they’re talking about.

‘We’ve got photographers outside the training ground, so they can see every day he’s on time. He has never been an issue in training, he trains really well. I really enjoy seeing him develop. Hopefully he has shaken off his illness and he’ll be ready for this weekend.’

Solskjaer expects Greenwood and captain Harry Maguire to be available to face Chelsea, and Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani could make his debut after training for three weeks since signing as a free agent on deadline day.

Nottm Forest 1-1 Derby County: Cocu denied much-needed win after Jozwiak’s late strike is ruled out

nottm forest 1 1 derby county cocu denied much needed win after jozwiaks late strike is ruled out

Taking the lead is one thing, hanging on to it quite another. As is so often the case with these two East Midlands neighbours, El Cloughico tends to end honours even.

There is a bigger picture here for both teams. The Wayne Rooney position at Derby and the inheriting of a confidence-lacking team at Forest will both occupy minds and agendas in the coming days as will the lowly position in the Championship table.

Stuck at home self-isolating, Rooney’s team-mates showed they could play without him, illustrated by a wonder free kick from Martyn Waghorn which put the visitors ahead. It turned out not to be a winner because of an Anthony Knockaert-inspired comeback saw Lyle Taylor mop up an equaliser from close range.

Derby went on to have a goal chalked off, Polish youngster Kamil Jozwiak’s strike ruled offside and had a penalty appeal dismissed although it looked as if Tom Lawrence was barely touched by Ryan Yates.

‘I hope people can understand why I get so frustrated at key moments,’ said Derby head coach Philip Cocu.

‘These decisions by referees, they are not small details, they are crucial in the game. They say Lawrence is a penalty, I didn’t see it. We are working hard to get results and to get up the table.

‘If we don’t deserve to win I will say it. We played really well in the first half and even after the goal we were close to winning the game.’

No Derby fans need telling their team have been doing badly – three points from the opening six League matches was their worst start in 28 years. Going into this match County had scored two goals and conceded 10. The only side with worse figures in the Championship are Wycombe.

Cocu has been looking ever more world weary, batting away constant questions about his future and Rooney’s status as manager-in-waiting. This was a better performance and highlighted the fact Forest are also in a bit of a state.

Hughton has been around the block often enough to know that there will be a minimal honeymoon period. Joe Lolley’s 90th minute decider at Blackburn was gratefully received and these two home draws has at least extended the unbeaten run to three after losing all five opening League and Cup games.

‘I’m pleased with some aspects, disappointed with others,’ was the Hughton verdict. ‘We started poorly like we did on Tuesday. We need to start better.’

Derby did that with Waghorn scoring his first goal since February, a pearler of a free kick from 25 yards. As expected, Forest replied but having equalised through Taylor sat back.
