ARSENAL are braced to lose defender William Saliba to Fulham on loan – but the newly-promoted side face competition from France, reports say.

The 19-year-old will have teams battling it out for him before the window closes tomorrow.

The Gunners want him to go out and get experience this season and Craven Cottage looks his most likely destination.

But the defender is also wanted by French side Rennes, according to French media.

And Saliba has been linked to Leeds recently as well.

It points to a three-way battle for the teen and a dramatic deadline day to come.

Rennes would likely have the edge, being able to offer Saliba a return to his homeland and Champions League football.

But Arsenal may prefer a move to a Premier League club to help him acclimatize to the division.

Manager Mikel Arteta has previously spoke about Saliba needing another “transition year” – despite the fact Arsenal loaned him back to Saint-Etienne last year.

He said: “He had year last where Arsenal essentially loaned him to Saint-Etienne and that was a transition year for him.

“For many reasons, that wasn’t the transition year that he needed.

“He had a lot of injuries, he had some personal issues and obviously with COVID and the French league getting cancelled, he didn’t have that year, so he needs that year of transition.

“He needs that year of transition and we are trying to make the right decisions for him to make the best possible year of transition for him to have the player we want for our future.”

FT: AJAX 0-1 LIVERPOOL

Brilliant result for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, with the week they’ve had with injuries, getting off to a winning start and a clean sheet was just what the doctor ordered!

Ajax came at Liverpool in the second half but much like the first half, there was no end product when it really mattered.

Klopp wasn’t taking any risks with his fabulous front three, taking them off for Jota, Minamino and Shaqiri.

The switch of attackers didn’t really stop Liverpool from playing the way they wanted to play.

Jota and co did a good job of dropping deep and catching Ajax on a quick counter attack and it even created chances to extend the Reds lead, notably at the end when Wijnaldum was picked out with a wonderful ball by Jota.

Liverpool pick up all three points and it’s a winning start to the 2020-21 Champions League campaign.

manchester city 3 1 fc porto ferran torres second club goal adds to ilkay gundogans wonderstrike

Manchester City were rescued by a wonderstrike from Ilkay Gundogan and a second club goal for new signing Ferran Torres after starting badly on Wednesday night.

City fell behind after 14 minutes when Luis Diaz was able to cut across the home defence before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Ederson.

But Pep Guardiola‘s side responded when Sergio Aguero struck from the penalty spot after Pepe had fouled Raheem Sterling.

Gundogan fired City into the lead with a fine free-kick from 25 yards before Torres added gloss.
