Arsenal have completed the signing of midfielder Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid.

The Gunners met the £45million release clause in the Ghana international’s Atletico contract. He will wear the No 18 shirt.

Partey had been heavily linked with Arsenal throughout the transfer window and a deal has now come to fruition. Atletico Madrid’s statement says La Liga informed them that the release clause for Thomas Partey was paid 32 minutes before the deadline.

According to ESPN, Partey, 27, has joined on a four year deal with the option for a further year.

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta told the club’s official website‘We have been watching Thomas for a while, so we’re now delighted to add such a high quality player to our squad. He is a dynamic midfielder with great energy.

‘He brings a lot of experience from a top club that has competed at the highest level in La Liga and the Champions League for several years.

‘We’re very impressed with his attitude and his approach to the game. He’s an intelligent footballer and we’re looking forward to him integrating into our system and contributing to the progress we’re building at the moment at the club.’

Arsenal’s technical director Edu said: ‘Thomas has all the right attributes to be a top player for Arsenal. He is a leader on and off the pitch and he is exactly the kind of player and person we want at the club. We already feel like we know Thomas very well based on the work we have done analysing his performances closely in recent times.

‘With his all-round game and positive aggressive style, he will be a brilliant addition to our squad. We’ve made a strong start to the season and we want to continue to build on this with Thomas now part of our club.’

Atletico’s statement on their official website read: ‘LaLiga informed Atlético de Madrid at 11.28pm on Monday that Arsenal representatives have paid Thomas Partey’s release clause at the sports association’s headquarters.

‘The player has therefore unilaterally terminated his contract with our club, which ran until June 30, 2023.’

It is believed Partey’s wages are around £250,000 a week and a £1.8m signing on fee could be included.

Partey travelled to London to undergo a medical. He made 188 appearances for Atletico.

The Spanish club had been keen to extend the Ghana defensive midfielder’s deal, but the financial ramifications of the coronavirus pandemic meant that Atletico were unable to meet the player’s demands.

Dortmund 2-0 Zenit: Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland provide late goals

dortmund 2 0 zenit jadon sancho and erling haaland provide late goals

Borussia Dortmund needed a 78th-minute penalty from Jadon Sancho and a stoppage-time goal from Erling Haaland to beat visitors Zenit St Petersburg 2-0 in their Champions League Group F match on Wednesday.

The Germans, who lost their opener to Lazio, controlled the game from the start but carved out few chances before Vyacheslav Karavaev inexplicably wrestled Thorgan Hazard to the ground for Sancho to score from the spot.

Haaland added a second in stoppage time with a powerful run.

Borussia are on three points with Zenit bottom of the group after two defeats in two games. Club Brugge and Lazio are top on four points.

The hosts, buoyed by their derby win over Schalke 04 on the weekend, had possession from the start but could not break past a deep-lying Zenit.

Norwegian striker Haaland had their best chance of the first half when his powerful shot flew just wide after captain Marco Reus missed two good chances of his own.

After pressure straight after the restart, Dortmund quickly ran out of ideas on how to crack open the Russian defence.

With Zenit gradually growing bolder, it looked like the Germans would have to settle for a draw until Hazard was brought down and Sancho sent the keeper the wrong way and Haaland sealed the win.

Dortmund next travel to Club Brugge on Nov. 4 while Zenit host Lazio.

alvaro morata has hat trick of goals disallowed for offside as juventus lose to barcelona in champions league

ALVARO MORATA had a hat-trick of goals DISALLOWED for offside as Juventus lost to Barcelona in the Champions League.

The former Chelsea striker was denied by VAR three times as Ousmane Dembele and Lionel Messi sealed a crucial 1-0 win for the La Liga side in Turin.

Amazingly, the Spaniard has actually found the net 18 times this year – but 11 of them have now been ruled out for offside.

It is a feeling the 28-year-old is growing accustomed to and it has only been a few days since he last suffered the same frustration.

VAR scuppered him again on Sunday in domestic action on another frustrating night for Juve as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Verona in Serie A.

Before that he came into the clash in stunning form following his return to the Italian champions in the summer.

Morata had three goals in three games but he has now fired a blank in both thanks to the eagle eye of VAR.

Juventus won 2-0 at Dynamo Kiev last week in their opening group game but they were unable to find a way past Barcelona – despite the recent turmoil both on the pitch and off it at the Nou Camp.

Dembele broke the deadlock with just 14 minutes on the clock and they managed to hold on to that advantage until the dying stages.

Morata was not the only one feeling frustrated.

Juventus, missing Cristiano Ronaldo after he tested positive for Covid-19 again, tried in vain to draw level.

But Messi kept his nerve to slot home a penalty in additional time to make it two wins from two in Group G.
