Speaking on Friday night’s Graham Norton Show on BBC One, Wenger said: “Competition is real – it’s you or me.

“Pain hurts and the biggest pain is to lose a football game.

“I was physically sick when I lost.

“When I was a young manager, I thought I would not survive in the job because the tension is so high and the pain so big when you lose.”

Talking about his new autobiography My Life In Red And White, Wenger admitted he regrets he devoted so much of his life to the game.

He said: “Football was everything. In life you have to find meaning and football had meaning for me.

“Today, when I look back – I am 70 now – I am a bit frightened of why it had such a big importance to me.

“Why did I sacrifice so much, and why did I live such a monastic life and not want to know anything else?

“Sometimes I worry about that.

“It was painful to look back and realise what a monster I was and how selfish I was.

“I lived my football with 100 per cent intensity.”

ole gunner solskjaer hails fantastic manchester united for their response to tottenham defeat

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hailed the ‘fantastic’ response of his Manchester United players to their 6-1 thrashing by Tottenham – having admitted they ‘weren’t in shape’ at the start of the season.

United started the campaign poorly, losing their Premier League opener to Crystal Palace before being humiliated at Old Trafford by Jose Mourinho’s side.

But they have responded in fine fashion, going four games unbeaten since including wins over Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig to take command of their Champions League group.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s home game with Arsenal, Solskjaer said: ‘I think any result as brutal as a 6-1 would have to get a response and, of course, it has been dealt with internally.

‘We’ve tweaked a couple of things, got players fit and I think the manner of defeat wasn’t something we should ever have to be confronted with again.

‘Then again, these things happen in football these days and the response has been fantastic. We wanted to finish that off as soon as we could and move forward.’

Solskjaer said after Wednesday’s 5-0 win over Leipzig that his players had not been fit enough prior to the October international break.

‘The truth is that we were not in shape before the international break,’ he told TV2. ‘Now we are fit and we are sharp and it has only gotten better and better.

‘We are always working to be stable and I think we have been stable ever since February. We’re lost one of the last eight, which I think is pretty consistent.

‘Our squad is good and it gives us many opportunities. We can play in different formations but the key is how we execute it. I am very happy at the moment.’
