Mikel Arteta reveals Reiss Nelson REJECTED loan move away despite limited opportunities this season

mikel arteta reveals reiss nelson rejected loan move away despite limited opportunities this season

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed the north London club wanted to loan out Reiss Nelson during the summer, however the 20-year-old wanted to stay and fight for his place.

The England Under 21 international has only played a total of 81 minutes of first team football this season, and was not part of the Gunners squad that lost 1-0 to Leicester despite fellow winger Willian being unavailable due to injury.

However, when Arteta took the reigns at the Emirates in December of last year Nelson started three of his first four games in charge.

He is expected to play some part in Thursday’s Europa League tie at home to Irish side Dundalk and the Gunners boss explained why he had received such little game time of late.

‘We had a few plans in mind with Reiss. One of them was to send him on loan to get more minutes because of the competition we have up front.’ He said.

‘The reality is he has been really good in training. He wants to stay here. He wants to fight for his place.’

On the subject of why the loan for Nelson didn’t come to fruition, Arteta replied: ‘It was mixed reasons, Reiss was really convinced that he wanted to fight to stay here.

‘When you see that willingness and that passion and that security in a player you feel tempted to keep him even though you know that opportunities are going to be restricted and he is not going to have a lot of continuity in his play.

‘But things change very quickly and if he starts playing and playing well and he does what he can do, why not? He could start to play more games.’

Arsenal have an abundance of talent in wide areas and the young winger is up against the likes of Willian, £72million record signing Nicolas Pepe, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and fellow youngster Bukayo Saka for a starting birth.

‘He is going to get the chances in the right moments,’ Arteta added.

‘What I am pleased with is how he has assimilated the situation – not playing a lot of minutes in the first few weeks.

‘As everybody can see, things are changing very quickly. We are getting injuries. We will get more injuries because of the schedule that we have and he will get the opportunities.’

rio ferdinand hails manchester uniteds improved form after rout of rb leipzig

Rio Ferdinand has heaped praise on former club Manchester United as the Red Devils legend hailed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side for recovering their form after a poor start to the season.

The United boss’s job had been under severe pressure after the international break, with the 6-1 hammering at home to Tottenham Hotspur putting the Norwegian’s place in the dugout at risk.

However, four points from a possible six against Newcastle and Chelsea, alongside impressive back-to-back wins in Europe over Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig has onset a wave of optimism around the club.

And Ferdinand has hailed the United boss following the 5-0 rout of the Bundesliga leaders at Old Trafford on Wednesday, saying ‘they have regrouped well’.

‘That’s football, it can change quick,’ Ferdinand said on BT Sport

‘The highs are very high, the lows are deeper than you can imagine. They’ve regrouped well, fitness has been key after Spurs and Palace.’

A tweak in formation has seen Solskjaer’s side’s fortunes change dramatically, and Ferdinand has been impressed with the squad depth available to the manager.

‘What I’m seeing is the depth. Players are coming in, there’s not been much of a change in the teams they’re putting out and they’re getting results.

‘Today [Marcus] Rashford comes on, Bruno [Fernandes] comes on and it impacts the game.’

Fellow United legend Paul Scholes added that Solskjaer would have been ‘scared to death’ by the Spurs drubbing, but commended the manager for getting the best out of his squad.

‘That Spurs game would’ve scared Ole to death,’ Scholes said.

‘He had to try and make the team more solid, playing the two in front of the back four has done that.

‘You look ahead of that – the quality, the speed… Fernandes with his passing quality, Rashford, [Anthony] Martial, [Mason] Greenwood… so many brilliant attacking players.

‘He’s found a way of playing which suits the squad he’s got.’

United will be looking to maintain their momentum this weekend, as they host Arsenal at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday.

Burnley ‘set for £200m takeover from new firm led by former Charlton lawyer Chris Farnell’

burnley set for 200m takeover from new firm led by former charlton lawyer chris farnell

Burnley‘s takeover by an American consortium looks to be on the rocks as a rival firm have been cleared to press ahead with a £200m bid for the club, reports claim.

The Premier League outfit looked certain to be purchased by ALK Capital, run by former Real Salt Lake chief Alan Pace, but talks with chairman Mike Garlick and director John Banaszkiewicz have hit a snag, according to the Athletic

Now sports lawyer Chris Farnell and Egyptian businessman Mohamed Elkashashy are set to push their own bid through, the report adds, after the Farnell successfully overturned a ban on becoming a director at an English football club having been involved in a turbulent takeover at Charlton earlier this year.

Farnell claimed he failed the English Football League’s Owners’ and Directors’ Test (ODT) because of an administrative mix-up, and a tribunal this week agreed he had not tried to mislead the EFL – meaning he has been given the green light to wrap up the takeover.

He was appointed as a lawyer at Charlton this year to advise the club and majority shareholder Tahnoon Nimer amid a boardroom battle, but was asked to end his involvement by owners ESI in August.

The 50-year-old claimed his only intention was to provide the club with legal assistance ‘for a short time’, adding: ‘I was never a director or owner of the football club, nor was I ever intending to be.

Farnell and Elkashashy have been in talks to buy Burnley over the last year, but ALK Capital’s negotiations were at a more advanced stage. Sportsmail reported that Garlick, who has a 49.24 per cent stake in the club, has met with Pace, the company’s chief, a number of times but has never been able to strike a deal.

Burnley endured a difficult summer after being hit by financial implications posed by the coronavirus pandemic and brought in just one signing of note – Brighton midfielder Dale Stephens for £1.5million, with manager Sean Dyche left frustrated at the club’s lack of flexibility in the market.

As a result, Garlick has been looking for new owners after admitting that Burnley could lose £50m if the outbreak continues to cripple the country. This year the Claret and Blue posted profits of just £4.3m.
