real madrid trolled as five players are caught out marking nobody in lead up to shakhtar donetsk goal

REAL MADRID were left red-faced when several players appeared to be marking nobody in Shakhtar Donetsk’s first goal last night.

Viewers of the Ukrainians’ 2-0 win were left baffled by the defending for Dentinho’s opener.

A freeze frame of the build-up showed Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Martin Odegaard, Nacho Fernandez and Rodrygo Goes all tracking back.

But the players were far closer to each other than any opponents – making them entirely ineffective as the ball was slammed home.

Amazingly, it wasn’t actually the worst piece of play from Los Blancos in the move.

That honour fell to Ferland Mendy and Raphael Varane, after the left-back intercepted the subsequent pass forward with a weak touch.

The ball came to Dentinho, courtesy of Varane’s decision to jump out of the way, and he emphatically slotted home.

Real played with a severely depleted backline on Tuesday night, shorn of Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal and Alvaro Odriozola.

Zidane forgot about social distancing.

That meant Lucas Vazquez was deployed as a makeshift right-back and it was the Spaniard who allowed Manor Salomon to run at goal and score in the 82nd minute.

Zinedine Zidane has vowed to carry on as Real coach amid a difficult start to the season.

The reigning LaLiga champions continue to suffer from silly errors with Thibaut Courtois gifting Alaves a goal in Madrid’s 2-1 defeat on the weekend.

That left Real fourth and seven points off leaders Real Sociedad, ahead of a crucial run of games against Sevilla and Atletico Madrid.

But it is next Wednesday’s visit of Borussia Monchengladbach that could be make or break for Zidane.

All four teams in Group B are separated by just three points with Real third and needing to avoid defeat.

The Champions League has long been seen as the most important competition for the Spanish giants and club bosses may not look favourably on a rare jaunt to the Europa League.

Avoiding mistakes like the one against Shakhtar will be key and fans were quick to poke fun at Los Blancos on Tuesday evening.

Twitter user Hans wrote: “Zidane forgot about social distancing.”

One cheeky fan added: “Is Ole Real Madrid manager or Zidane?”

Another tweeted: “They maintained a tight line, to be fair.”

While one account called Europae League tweeted: “Welcome to Europa League Real Madrid.”

And Gooner Siencheu commented: “Please for God’s sake, Real Madrid don’t come into our Europa league. Arsenal need to try and win this nonsense this year.”

cristiano ronaldo wins notoriously tough golden foot award a gong lionel messi has never claimed

JUVENTUS star Cristiano Ronaldo has fended off competition from Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski to win the 2020 Golden Foot award.

The 35-year-old has been named as the 18th recipient of the prestigious trophy that can only be won once during a player’s career.

To be in contention for the award – that was introduced in 2003 for Europe’s standout performers – footballers must be at least 28 years of age.

The winners are then invited to leave a mould of their footprints on the “The Champions Promenade” in Monaco.

Ten players are shortlisted for the trophy by international journalists, with the general public to then vote for their winner in an online poll.

And it is Ronaldo that received the most votes from fans across the world after he finished the 2019/20 season with 37 goals in 46 games.

Ronaldo has been in fine form this term too having found the back of the net nine times in just seven outings for the Old Lady.

Along with Ronaldo, Messi, Lewandowski, Neymar, Mohamed Salah, Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique, Sergio Aguero, Giorgio Chiellini and Arturo Vidal were all nominated.

It seems incredible that Ronaldo – who has won the Champions League and Ballon d’Or five times each – has never won the Golden Foot before.

And the fact that Messi has never claimed the trophy remains a mystery with the two dominating football for well over a decade.

The trophy has largely been dominated by Serie A clubs since it’s inception, with Italian teams boasting the winner eight out of 18 times.

Ronaldo wasn’t the only Bianconeri representative to secure silverware, as club president Andrea Agnelli was crowned the winner of the inaugural Golden Foot Prestige award.

UFC star Leon Edwards is OUT of his fight against Khamzat Chimaev after contracting a severe case of coronavirus.

According to ESPN, the 29-year-old Brit has lost 12lbs and has been unable to train.

Edwards was scheduled to fight highly-touted Chimaev at UFC Fight Night 183 on December 19, but the bout has now been axed.

The main event will now be a welterweight contest between Geoff Neal and two-time world title challenger Stephen Thompson.

Edwards is now recovering at home, and there are plans to reschedule the scrap for the early part of 2021.

The 29-year-old has not fought since beating ex-lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos in July 2019.

Edwards’ inactivity threatened to see him wiped off the 170lb standings.

But UFC president Dana White revealed a deal has been agreed for him to face rising star Chimaev.

Edwards was due to face former welterweight king Tyron Woodley in March in the UFC London headliner.

But the coronavirus pandemic forced the event to be cancelled.

Due to travel and lockdown restrictions, Edwards has been unable to fight.

Chimaev on the other hand has fought three times this year, twice on Fight Island in July.

The 26-year-old Russian-born-Swede won his UFC debut against John Phillips at middleweight and ten days later stopped Rhys McKee.

He then maintained his winning momentum with a 17-second knockout of Gerald Meerschaert in September.
