Bulgaria 0 Wales 1: Watch Jonny Williams score dramatic late winner as Dragons take huge three points

bulgaria 0 wales 1 watch jonny williams score dramatic late winner as dragons take huge three points

THE Willams’s once again combined to sink Bulgaria with a late show – for the second time in just over five weeks.

Last month in Cardiff it was a cross from Jonny for young defender Neco to head home with almost the last action of the game.

And in Sofia the Liverpool youngster returned the favour as his centre was swept home at the near post by the Charlton man.

Bulgaria will be pleased to see the back of them – but between them they have put Wales firmly in control of their Nations League group.

It has been far from pretty with Wales – scoring only three goals in their four matches so far – but they have taken 10 points.

And to be fair Ryan Giggs was without three of his best attacking players with Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and David Brooks all ruled out with injury.

Once again opted once again to play a young side – with Luton’s Rhys Norrington Davies the 19th players to be given his first cap by the Dragons boss.

In fact eight of the starting line-up named here in Sofia were blooded by the former Manchester United man, who is determined to usher in a new era.

Yet Ryan’s rookies did him proud in what was a bad tempered affair against a well drilled but toothless home side.

Wales were in control of the first half although chances were hard to come by.

A Dan James corner found Joe Rodon at the back post but the Tottenham target lofted his shot onto the roof of the net.

Neco Williams sent over a cross that was met by the head of Tyler Roberts but his effort was comfortably saved by the home keeper.

It was the only time either keeper was called into action in the whole first half as James poked another shot narrowly wide.

Thankfully the game livened up after the break as Neco Williams crossed for Norrington-Davies early in the second half but the Luton man fired his effort over the bar.

Harry Wilson had the chance to fire in one of his trademark free-kicks but this one was easy for Nickolay Mihaylov

A wild tackle from James on Cicinho caused tempers on both sides boil over – with the United wide man given a yellow card.

Giggs chose to substitute him minutes later – perhaps to ensure he did not do anything silly.

His replacement Rabbi Matondo weaved his way in from the left but the Schalke wide man curled his effort just wide.

Bulgaria’s finishing was so poor that it  was not hard to believe they have won only one of their last 18 fixtures.

In addition to that it was more than 10 hours of football since Giggs’ men last conceded a goal in competitive football.

If there was going to be a winner it was surely going to be the Dragons and once again they were leaving it late.

A low cross from the right by Tyler Roberts evaded sub Jonny Williams but found Matondo arriving at the back post. but he could not keep his effort down and it flew over the bar.

At the other end Wayne Hennessey had not had a shot to save and was clearly not properly warm as he pulled something while trying to prevent a corner.

The Crystal Palace man – winning his 94th cap – was unable to continue and was replaced by Stoke’s Adam Davies for the last few minutes.

But just as it looked certain to end goalless the Williams came to the rescue again – with Williams – who had only been on as a sub for just over 12 minutes – sweeping home.

Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema are leaders at Real Madrid… Vinicius needs to earn their respect

sergio ramos and karim benzema are leaders at real madrid vinicius needs to earn their respect

Karim Benzema was as good as his word in the second half of Real Madrid‘s draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach on Tuesday night.

After delivering the ‘don’t give it to him’ line to Ferland Mendy, he duly refrained from passing to the Brazilian for the rest of the game. Mendy gave Vinicius the ball just three times.

The Real Madrid dressing can be a tough place and Vinicius found that out in the tunnel, or more to the point, didn’t find that out in the tunnel because Mendy and Benzema were speaking French. Multilingual Thibaut Courtois was also in earshot and would have understood, Vinicius will probably have learned via social media.

The clip did not just show a division among team-mates. It also showed a discrepancy between senior player and coach.

Benzema is clearly not behind Zinedine Zidane picking the sometimes erratic winger ahead of other players. Vinicius had a very below par Clasico.

He was guilty of wasting three or four second half breakaways picking the wrong pass, making the wrong decision and on one occasion even taking the ball off of Benzema when the Frenchman was better placed. It had been a similar story in the first half in Germany.

‘While the dogs bark, the No.9 passes,’ said Benzema on Instagram on Wednesday morning. To his credit he had not posted a picture of himself celebrating a goal with Vinicius. His take on the incident will be that it was frustration from a first half in which Vinicius had been out of sorts. If Madrid were going to win they would probably have to do it without him.

This is not the first time Benzema has taken Vinicius to taks: ‘Lift your head,’ he could be heard saying last December in a game against Espanyol. What happens now? Probably nothing. Zidane will dismiss it as something that happens in football in his next press conference. Does it shine a light on the cliques and cracks in the Madrid dressing room? Yes and no.

Luka Modric and Vinicius’ Brazilian team-mate Rodrygo shared a joke during the Clasico when the Croatian gave Rodrygo a pass while he was still waiting to be brought on. ‘Relax, I’m not even on the pitch yet dad!’ joked the Brazilian forward on twitter. Modric joked back: ‘Why don’t you play a one-two with me?’

The 19-year-old South American and the 35-year-old Croatian have a good relationship and when the team is beating Barcelona at the Camp Nou everyone is happy.

What Benzema’s spat with Vinicius does underline is the authority that the Frenchman carries and how the 20-year-old probably needs to improve quickly to survive long term at Madrid. His speed, stamina, dribbling ability and bravery get him into so many good situations in games but rushed shots and passes and bad decisions mean the end product tends to leave a lot to be desired.

Players such as Benzema and Ramos have won everything there is to win in football and they don’t suffer fools gladly.

Barcelona paper Sport reported how Ramos clashed with Isco over his poor form and lack of application recently. From the outside that may be seen as division in the camp, as far as Ramos is concerned it simply falls into his remit as skipper.

Madrid’s dressing room does not divide itself into groups based on nationality or age. Players such as Toni Kroos and Gareth Bale who have in the past been cast as outsiders because of a lack of implication towards squad dinners and, in Bale’s case, supporting the team for 90 minutes when not on the pitch, don’t influence relationships.

Both Kroos and Bale then have good relationships with the leaders because they delivered, especially in big games.

The requisite for getting on at the club is that you become indispensable on the pitch. When Thibaut Courtois turned up there was a frosty response from Ramos who was very pro-Keylor Navas.

Did that mean he preferred the Costa Rican’s dressing wit to the Belgian’s training ground chat? No, but he had won three Champions Leagues with Navas and that meant he defended him against all-comers.

Courtois has since become one of Real Madrid’s most important players and saved the team again last Saturday in the Clasico when he kept out Lionel Messi’s goalbound shot after Messi had turned Ramos inside out in the penalty area.

Ramos and Courtois’ relationship is in a good place now and the former Chelsea keeper’s form is a big part of that.

Vinicius is still very much a talented kid, who Benzema probably feels – after playing alongside Cristiano Ronaldo for nine years – probably shouldn’t be a first team regular next to him on the pitch.

Eddie Hearn names his boxing ‘Mount Rushmore’… but Matchroom promoter leaves out legend Floyd Mayweather

EDDIE HEARN has named his ‘Mount Rushmore’ of boxing – but left out Floyd Mayweather.

The American National Memorial sculpture, situated in the Black Hills region of South Dakota, features the carved heads of former presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.

Promoter Hearn was asked which past or present legends of the last 40 to 50 years deserve the recognition to be put on boxing’s own Rushmore.

And he picked Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard and Pernell Whitaker.

But speaking to SPORTbible, Hearn explained why he left 50-0 Mayweather off the list.

He said: “Legends evolve over time.

“When you look at the weight divisions that Manny Pacquiao has won world championships in, you have to say Pacquiao should be on a list like that.

“But for me, I don’t look at Floyd Mayweather as a historic fighter.

“One day we’ll look back on Mayweather as a great, but he’s got to be a little bit careful. To retire with dignity is a wonderful thing.

“To retire undefeated is amazing, but to do it with dignity and class is special. But he loves a pound note.”

Mayweather hung up the gloves as a professional in 2017, after beating UFC star Conor McGregor.

But he returned a year later to face featherweight kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa, in an exhibition bout in Japan that lasted one round.

Mayweather, 43, has even teased another comeback this year, whereas Ali, Tyson, Leonard and Whitaker have all cemented their legacies.

Ali – considered The Greatest – reigned as heavyweight champion three times and shared some of the greatest rivalries in boxing history.

He died in 2016 at the age of 74, leaving behind a great legacy outside the ring.

Sugar Ray is also celebrated for his historic matchups, against Roberto Duran, Marvin Hagler and Tommy Hearns.

Leonard, now 64, possessed lightening quick hands which helped him win titles in five weight classes.

Like Mayweather, Whitaker was remembered for his masterful defence and elusive counter-punching style.

The four-division champion – who also spent time as a trainer – passed away in 2019 aged 55 after a car accident.

Tyson, 54, is now the only one of Hearn’s four selections still fighting, after he announced a comeback to face Roy Jones Jr, 51, this year.

Iron Mike had retired in 2005, following an up and down career.

He is one of the most famed punchers in history and became the youngest heavyweight champ of all time aged 20.
