Adam Lallana burst into tears as he paid tribute to Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson during an emotional farewell on Friday.

The midfielder’s six-year stay at Anfield will come to an end on Sunday when his contract expires following the final game of the season against Newcastle.

Lallana was presented with a framed memento by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp during Friday’s training session, which featured pictures of his finest moments in a Reds shirt.

The 32-year-old, who moved to Liverpool from Southampton in 2014, was asked about his close friendship with Henderson during an interview with the club’s TV channel as they looked back at his Reds career.

Lallana became emotional as soon as the interviewer mentioned Henderson’s name but composed himself before delivering a touching tale about their time together.

‘Having been with Jordan throughout the whole journey,’ he said to LFC TV. ‘I’ve been lucky enough to be alongside him when he’s had his down moments. Having been alongside him in his dark moments, a couple of injuries, him being alongside me in my dark moments, injuries… it’s not just defeats, it’s injuries as well.

‘That will be a constant battle for Premier League athletes throughout footballing careers. You’re just looking for answers, try harder, do this, do that, there’s nothing that will guarantee you fitness. You’ve just got to keep working.’

Lallana and Henderson have both suffered setbacks with injuries and form throughout their time at Anfield, with the Reds’ captain coming close to leaving the club back in 2012 after a difficult start to life at the club.

But he has since gone on to captain the Reds to Champions League and Premier League success and Lallana hailed Henderson’s leadership qualities and willingness to take responsibility during troubled times.

He added: ‘There was one morning in, we used to drive in a lot, there was one defeat, we lost to Sevilla – or it was 3-3 away, it felt like a defeat. He said to me, ‘I’ll pick you up tomorrow’. He had his hood up, just hearing him say, as captain, ‘That can’t happen, I have to be responsible for that’. To hear how honest he was but thinking, like, “are you crazy to be taking that responsibility? It’s the team’s responsibility”.

‘But that just epitomises his selflessness and how much responsibility he takes for this football club in the bad moments. That’s why he deserves this more than anyone else. He deserves to be the captain of Liverpool, holding the four trophies in one season, more than anyone. No one can take that away from him ever. As his team-mate, not only his friend, nothing makes me happier really.’

Lallana is expected to be handed a farewell appearance for Liverpool’s final game on Sunday having made just 16 outings in the Premier League this season after struggling to break into the starting XI.

The England international will then make a decision over his future, with a host of top-flight clubs reportedly battling it out to sign him on a free transfer.

Leicester City have reportedly offered Lallana a three-year deal, while Arsenal, Tottenham and Burnley have also been credited with an interest.

Frank Lampard identified the 23-year-old as their first-choice target months ago but has struggled to meet Leicester’s valuation.

Stamford Bridge officials were stunned to be told they will have to cough up more than the £80million fee United paid for Harry Maguire last summer.

Other top clubs in the Champions League, including the Red Devils, are said to be monitoring Chilwell’s future.

The outlet adds that the Three Lions ace has told pals he could be on the move this summer.

Yet Chelsea may be forced to look elsewhere for a cheaper left-back with question marks lingering over Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri.

The Blues are also interested in Ajax man Nicolas Tagliafico and Real Madrid’s Sergio Reguilon after he impressed on loan at Sevilla.

United, meanwhile, currently have Luke Shaw as their first-choice option at left back.

And the Red Devils seemed to signal no desire to strengthen in that area after extended the contract of emerging talent Brandon Williams last week.

Speaking before the end of the season, Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers admitted he “didn’t know” if Chilwell had played his last game for the club.

But the Northern Irishman added: “He’s not a player we want to lose. I’m quite relaxed on it. I’m not worried at all.

“We’ve got a fantastic squad that we want to keep together so I don’t worry.

“You can spin it whichever way you want. There is no intention to sell Ben Chilwell and there is absolutely no need for us to sell Ben Chilwell.

“If you want a message, the message is he’s not for sale.”
