Crystal Palace have confirmed the deadline day signing of goalkeeper Jack Butland from Stoke City on a three-year deal.

The South London side announced the deal four-and-a half hours after the domestic transfer window after being granted an extension.

The move sees the former England stopper link up with former national manager Roy Hodgson at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace have confirmed the signing of Jack Butland from Stoke City on a three-year deal

After confirming the move the Palace boss said: ‘I’m very happy that the club has managed to acquire the signature of Jack to join us and compete for a place amongst our goalkeepers at the club. Jack is a player that I worked with for four years at England.

‘His last game for me as England manager was a very unfortunate one where he broke his ankle and that cost him his place in the 2016 Euros. But I’ve always believed in Jack’s potential.

‘I am aware that his last spell at Stoke hasn’t been the happiest one for him but I sincerely believe that with his qualities, coming to a new club will enable him to resurrect his career and show once again what a good goalkeeper he is.’

Butland’s arrival sees Angus Gunn move the other way to the Bet365 Stadium on a season-long loan.

The 27-year-old was once tipped as the future of English goalkeeping but has seen his career suffer through injury and loss of form over the last couple of years.

He won the first four of his nine England caps under Hodgson and the Palace boss believes the keeper is young enough to turn things around and provide competition for Vicente Guaita.

Butland was relegated with Stoke in 2018, the year he last played for England, and struggled last season in the Championship.

He spent seven years at the Bet365 Stadium, making 168 appearances, keeping 50 clean sheets and winning the club’s player of the year award two times.

Palace Chairman Steve Parish added: ‘We have added another experienced player of high calibre to our squad in Jack. It marks a really successful window for us, with five quality signings, adding great depth to Roy’s squad.’

mike ashley lays into premier leagues controversial ppv prices and calls on chiefs to charge 4 95 until christmas scaled

NEWCASTLE owner Mike Ashley has torn into the Premier League’s controversial PPV matches.

And he believes the prices should be slashed from £14.95 to £4.95 until Christmas.

Prem clubs will tomorrow discuss cutting the PPV charge to under a tenner – but not until AFTER next month’s international break.

Fans have so far resisted meeting the current £14.95 fee for some televised games broadcast on Sky Sports and BT Box Office.

And clubs will be asked to consider a change in pricing policy when the Premier League resumes after the international break on the weekend of November 21.

A new price of £9.95 per match is likely to be proposed as one option.

But Newcastle chief Ashley believes it should be cut even further to £4.95.

He said via an official statement released by Newcastle: “I am calling on the Premier League to immediately act and review its current pay-per-view arrangements for live matches in the UK.

“Charging £14.95 for single televised matches in the current climate is not acceptable to any football fan.

“Supporters have overwhelmingly rejected this offer and the Premier League must now act.

“Why not make it much more accessible at £4.95 per match until Christmas?

“The Government should waive VAT on the above pay-per-view matches so that as many of those who are unable to attend matches in person can at least watch their team.

“The profit from the above reduced price pay-per-view option, I would suggest that 50 per cent would be retained by Premier League and 50 per cent would go to the football pyramid below.

“As a club, Newcastle United did vote in favour of the pay-per-view proposal, but to be clear, this was because there were no realistic or any viable alternatives put forward to enable supporters to watch matches.”
