david moyes reveals he had a helicopter ready to sign gareth bale for manchester united in 2013

David Moyes has revealed he had a helicopter ready to sign Gareth Bale in 2013 whilst he was Manchester United manager, only for the Welshman to snub him and join Real Madrid.

Both parties have gone in different directions since but could face each other again on Saturday as Bale gets set to make his second Tottenham debut against West Ham.

Moyes, now at the London Stadium, succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United but was sacked after just seventh months in the job.

But things could have been different if the Scot had secured Bale, who he wanted as his first summer signing at the time.

Bale was one of the hottest properties in football after starring for Spurs in the 2012-13 season, eventually joining Madrid for a then-world record £85m.

‘I wanted Gareth Bale to be my first signing at Manchester United. But it was already down the road a bit with Real Madrid. I tried to hijack it. I tried to get him’, revealed Moyes.

‘Manchester United offered more money than Real Madrid. They offered more money to the player.

‘We did everything we could to try and get the player. We even had a helicopter at the training ground to take him and bring him back. We thought we had a chance.

‘But he chose Real Madrid and he made a brilliant decision because he went on to win four Champions Leagues. He’s had a brilliant career.’

Bale secured a sensation loan return to north London this summer after falling out of favour at Madrid but is yet to feature for Spurs as he steps up his fitness.

Now-manager Jose Mourinho revealed he could finally unleash Bale and will likely start on the right alongside Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son in attack.

Moyes will be back in the West Ham dugout for the clash after recovering from Covid-19 which saw him miss wins against Wolves and Leicester.

efl trophy renamed papa johns trophy as takeaway joint take over sponsorship and burton hand out free pizza scaled

CLUBS are hungry for a slice of the EFL Cup after it was renamed the Papa John’s Trophy following a tasty new sponsorship deal.

Burton Albion players handed out pizzas for families in need to celebrate the EFL’s new three-year arrangement with the Pizza takeaway firm – and boost Marcus Rashford’s campaign to extend free school meals.

Papa John’s will supply a new base and toppings for the cup after succeeding former car leasing company sponsor Leasing.com as its sponsors.

But some fans mocked the partnership on social media, suggesting it was a little too cheesy.

One said: “This is the reason it is not taken seriously!” – while another argued the competition’s new moniker was worse than “Uber eats”.

But others couldn’t resist tucking away a few open goals – with comments like “They want a pizza the action” and “They’re paying a lotta dough for this”.

The competition’s new name will feature for the first time in the build-up to the next round of group stage matches – on November 10-11.

And the brand will also become the “official pizza of the EFL”.

Burton stars gave away Papa John’s pizzas to families during half-term in response to calls for the Government to expand free meals to holidays.

The League One club passed on 100 lunches to families outside their Pirelli Stadium.

Papa John’s also donated 120 slices to help Burton’s effort.

FL Chief Commercial Officer Ben Wright said: “The EFL is delighted to welcome Papa John’s as title sponsor of the EFL Trophy and a new addition to the League’s portfolio of partners.

“As we continue to navigate through the challenging times that the coronavirus pandemic presents, it is testament to the growing appeal of the EFL that we are able to attract new partners and invest the sponsorship fee into the competition through payments to clubs, which is important during this difficult period.”

f1 slammed by human rights groups after saudi arabia race in jeddah announced for first time on grand prix calendar scaled

F1 BOSSES have been condemned by human rights groups for scheduling next year’s penultimate race of the season in Saudi Arabia.

But Amnesty International fell short of demanding the cancellation of the race in Jeddah – only asking the Lewis Hamilton and the rest of the grid to speak out against the country’s regime.

Formula One chiefs have been in discussions with the Saudi authorities over a race in the Gulf state for most of this year.

Now they plan the street circuit in the Red Sea city which will host the first Saudi GP while a new purpose-built track at Qiddiyah, scheduled for 2023, is completed.

But the proposal faced an instant push back from Amnesty International, which branded the race “part of ongoing efforts to sportswash the country’s abysmal human rights record”.

The organisation added: “Saudi authorities apparently still see elite-level sport as a means of rebranding their severely tarnished reputation.

“If a Saudi Grand Prix goes ahead, at the very least Formula One should insist that all contracts contain stringent labour standards across all supply chains, and that all race events are open to everyone without discrimination

“In the lead-up to a race in Jeddah, we would urge all F1 drivers, owners and teams to consider speaking out about the human rights situation in the country.

“Including by expressing solidarity with jailed human rights defenders.”

While Saudi Arabia is on the provisional schedule for the first time, there is currently no Brazilain GP planned for the first time since 1972.

This year’s race was cancelled because of Covid-19 but F1 is now in a dispute with the promoter of the Interlagos track on the outskirts of Sao Paulo.

Meanwhile, this weekend’s Emilio Romagna GO at Imola will take place without fans after the Italian government banned spectators.

Track chiefs had planned for a 13,000 attendance but rising Covid-19 infections in the region saw Government bosses in Rome step in, with F1 saying it “understands and respects the decision taken by the authorities”.
