dortmund ceo slams paul scholes and owen hargreaves for bluffing claims on jadon sancho stance

Dortmund chief Hans-Joachim Watzke has slammed former Manchester United stars Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves for claiming the German side were ‘bluffing’ in their stance over Jadon Sancho

Speaking as pundits on BT Sport this week, the pair both said they were not convinced by sporting director Michael Zorc’s claim that the club would not be selling the 20-year-old to United and that their decision was final.

Sancho is a top target for the Red Devils this summer, but the club have been repeatedly frustrated in negotiations for the star – with the Bundesliga outfit refusing to sell for anything less than £108million.

But former United stars Paul Scholes (L) and Owen Hargreaves (R) said Dortmund were bluffing

A deadline of August 10 was set to complete the transfer, and the player has now begun pre-season training. United don’t believe the missed deadline is a deal breaker and are still optimistic of getting the deal done.

Hargreaves and Scholes said they felt the statement was a tactic by Dortmund to convince United to pay up, but Watzke dismissed their comments – saying they weren’t ‘transfer experts’ and reaffirmed that Sancho was going nowhere.

‘I read that too,’ he told the press after being quizzed on the pair’s comments.

‘This is what experts like Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves claim. They were great footballers, and they are football experts. But I don’t know if they are transfer experts too. That Sancho stays with BVB is set in stone.’

Dortmund have experience of being forced to sell their top stars in previous years, with Pierre-Emerick Aubamyang pushing through his £56m move to Arsenal in 2018, while Ousmane Dembele refused to train with the team prior to his £135m transfer to Barcelona in the same year.

But Watzke said he is confident Sancho remains content in Germany and is enjoying playing under Lucien Favre after the player admitted he ‘loved playing with this bunch’ after featuring in a 6-0 friendly against Austrian side SCR Altach.

‘I don’t see this danger at all,’ he added. At the [friendly] in Altach – as you know – Jadon himself explained how ‘happy he is in this special bunch’.

‘We have a good exchange with his advisors. We acknowledge that Jadon responds very well. And he recognises that we have a good team that gives him a lot of fun playing football. He shows this joy every day now. In training. In the game.’

Speaking on BT Sport in the build up to United’s Europa League quarter-final against Copenhagen on Monday, Hargreaves, who spent four years at Old Trafford, said: ‘I’m calling their bluff. I think [Sancho] will be a Manchester United player in a pretty short time.

‘They’re trying to get a bit more money out of it. That’s the nature of the beast. Obviously they know United are really interested, they’re pretty heavy into negotiations. I think they’re bluffing.’

And United legend Scholes agreed, saying: ‘They’re after a little bit more money out of it, aren’t they? He’s a great player. We’re talking £108m. That’s a lot of money to go to,’ he added.

Speaking after Dortmund’s win at Altach, Sancho confirmed he was enjoying his football with the team he joined as a teenager and was keen to inspire the young stars coming through the ranks – including fellow Brit Jude Bellingham – who signed from Birmingham last month.

‘I love playing with this lot,’ he said. ‘It’s a special bunch. We’ve got some special young players coming up.’

‘I’m really happy to share the pitch with them and guide them. I was once in their shoes, playing with the seniors. I’m happy for them.

‘I joined when I was 17, some of the lads are the same age. I’ve been there and done that. I can guide them in what’s good and what isn’t. I can hopefully motivate them as well.’

Real Betis 2-3 Real Madrid: Sergio Ramos comes to the rescue

real betis 2 3 real madrid sergio ramos comes to the rescue

It was business as usual for Real Madrid and Sergio Ramos as the reigning Champions beat Betis 3-2 .

The captain dinked the winner from the penalty spot – his 24th straight spot-kick success – and the three points came after two tight VAR calls went the visitor’s way.

Karim Benzema thought he had put Real Madrid ahead after just two minutes when he converted Ferland Mendy’s cross. The joy was short-lived because the Frenchman was offside.

Antonio Sanabria then connected with a Sergio Canales cross and drew an incredible stop from Thibaut Courtois. The keeper had to adjust his feet and change direction to bat away the Paraguay forward’s downward header.

A goal was going to come at one end sooner or later and on minute 13 Fede Valverde put Madrid 1-0 up. Benzema tied Alex Moreno in knots and crossed from the right for Fede Valverde to score.

Segio Ramos then nearly doubled the lead but Marc Bartra got enough of his heel to the ball to divert it wide but not enough for the referee to spot the block and give a corner.

Betis did not shrink back into their shell and they deserved the equalizer that came ten minutes before the break. Again Canales provided the cross, this time from the left and Mandi climbed above Casemiro to head past Courtois.

Three minutes later and Betis had turned the game on its head. Toni Kroos gave the ball away and when Canales played it out to Fekir, he found William Carvalho who had ghosted ahead of Martin Odegaard. It was loose from Madrid and Courtois then allowed the midfielder’s shot to beat him at his near post.

There was still time in a helter-skelter first half for Joel Robles to save from Benzema and for Kroos to be taken off for Modric. Was it for giving the ball away ahead of the goal? The doubts dispersed when Kroos clutched the top of his hamstring.

Real Madrid were back on terms two minutes into the second half. Moreno gave Dani Carvajal too much space and Emerson turned the cross past his own goalkeeper.

Benzema’s rocket shot then came down off the crossbar and over the line but he was offside when he pulled the trigger and it stayed at 2-2.

Benzema was on form and soon he did provoke ‘advantage Madrid’ when his perfect pass sent Jovic through.

He had yards to cover and Emerson to shake off but the Brazilian full-back nudged him and when he went down, VAR advised referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea to take a second look and, somewhat harshly he decided it was a straight red card offence.

Down to ten men Betis might now would have been expected to just hang on but Carvalho curled a shot that Courtois need to stretch to push out. His two saves had been vital in the win.

At the other end Jovic’s luck is still out because despite forcing that red he had struggled throughout and was taken off to be replaced Borja Mayoral. The sub was involved in the winner.

It came from Ramos who scored it with a Panenka from the spot. Again VAR intervened and again it intervened in Madrid’s favour.

Marc Bartra was adjudged to have used his arms to clear the ball. Betis will argue he was falling as the ball struck the top of his arm and he was falling under pressure from Mayoral.

The VAR interventions made for eight minutes of added time but Betis had nothing left in the tank and were left with complaints and a feeling of injustice. Madrid, as so often last season, were left with the points.
