Jamie Redknapp has revealed he ‘feels sorry’ for Harry Maguire after the Manchester United captain was sent off for England against Denmark, as the Sky Sports pundit added the defender is ‘having a moment’.

England boss Gareth Southgate named the £85m defender in his starting eleven for the UEFA Nations League tie with Denmark, following on from his display in the 2-1 win over Belgium on Sunday.

But Maguire was sent for an early bath in the first half after committing two clumsy challenges on Kasper Dolberg, with referee Jesus Manzano brandishing a second yellow and reducing England to ten men.

It piles more misery on the former Leicester man, who was in the centre of a media storm in the post-season following his arrest in Mykonos, Greece.

His off-field turmoil has seemingly carried into the 2020-21 campaign, with his form dipping with the Red Devils, having featured in the 6-1 hammering to Spurs before the international break.

Redknapp said that he ‘feels sorry’ for Maguire and was reluctant to criticise a player ‘lacking confidence’ during a troublesome time in his career.

‘I feel sorry for him,’ Redknapp said at half time. ‘It would be easy to rip him apart. He’s having a moment.

‘He’s having a really bad moment in his career that he is somehow going to have to pull himself together and he’s got a big weekend coming up for him for Manchester United and he’s got to get his confidence back because he is a player really lacking confidence.

‘There is a lot going on in his life. I think sometimes we forget that. You can genuinely see he is really struggling with his game at the moment.’

Meanwhile, United icon Gary Neville said that Maguire’s nightmare display on Wednesday was a reflection of his start to the season thus far.

‘It sums up his last four to six weeks,’ Neville said on Sky Sports. ‘Terrible time for him.

I thought he was lucky with the first challenge. In between a yellow and a red. That one was scruffy play from him. That touch, really slack. And the follow through as well.

‘He made one mistake, don’t make the second. The touch lets him down and that follow through. He’s got nowhere to go with it, the Spanish referee.’

Shortly after Maguire’s dismissal, England conceded to the visitors, with Christian Eriksen slotting home a penalty after Manzano deemed that Kyle Walker had committed a foul in the 18-yard box.

jon jones refuses to let ufc goat debate go and continues to insist he is above khabib at no1 by raging its laughable scaled

JON JONES is refusing to back down in the row over who is the greatest UFC scrapper of all-time.

The argument was sparked after Khabib Nurmagomedov retained his lightweight title following Saturday’s win over Justin Gaethje.

After announcing his shock retirement moments after extending his 29-0 record, he said: “There is only one thing I want from UFC, to put me as No.1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world because I deserve it.

“UFC undisputed, undefeated lightweight champion, 13-0, 13 in UFC, 29 in all pro MMA career. I think I deserve it.”

Jones, the current P4P king, quickly refuted Khabib’s request in a lengthy Twitter rant.

And now the 33-year-old is not letting it go, hitting out at the opponents Khabib has faced on his way to the top.

He wrote: “Unanimous decision over last minute replacement Al Iaquinta to become champion.

Conor McGregor is the only opponent he’s ever had that the general public actually knew. Catapulted my man to becoming the best ever, this is hilarious.”

The American, who has 15 title defences to his name, had previously written: “I’m just going to ask for the heavyweight championship belt and see if they give it to me. Since we can ask for things now.

“I won 15 world titles, he just won his 4th. The fact this is even a conversation is mind blowing to me.

“I got signed by the UFC literally nine months after my very first MMA practice. Unheard of.

“When I signed with UFC I was one of the youngest fighters on the roster, youngest champion in the history of the sport and have only had three competitive fights.

“My competitive nature won’t allow me to just stand by and see someone ask to be considered the best. I’ve sacrificed too much blood.

“I mean if I get out ranked by a man with only three title defences, I don’t really know what to think anymore.

“Yet people want me to stay quiet and let him have his moment while I just sit back and watch my hard work get moved down the rankings.

“It’s not fair to my family, or the team of people who have sacrificed to get me this far.

“If we’re having a popularity contest, I’d gladly take my L. This s*** has nothing to do with fame or being a good person.

“I’ve giving my whole adult life to this game, I owe it to myself to speak up.”

UFC president Dana White has even claimed that Khabib will go down as the GOAT after Saturday’s epic performance.

But Jones believes he isn’t even in his top two as he stated his four championship bouts aren’t enough for him to be considered the best.

In a video he posted on social media, Jones – who is a two-time light-heavyweight champ – said: “I’m talking to all you Khabib fans out there.

“Fiftenn world titles to your guy’s four and you are really talking about who is the best fighter ever? You guys are joking right? 15-4, are you guys kidding me?

“The only guy who could possibly come back and challenge my record of what I’ve done in the UFC is possibly Georges St-Pierre.”

Jones vacated his light-heavyweight belt in August in his bid to secure a bout against heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic.

LaLiga president Javier Tebas has hit out at Barcelona‘s outgoing chief Josep Bartomeu for giving the club’s approval to be part of the new European Super League alongside his resignation.

The under-fire Barcelona president stepped down alongside the rest of the club’s board on Tuesday night with a vote of no confidence looming.

However Bartomeu claimed to have ratified the club’s participation in a European Super League before he quit.

The Catalan giants are one of several European clubs who would likely become part of the new competition, which is threatening to replace the Champions League in the coming years and would have an impact on the domestic divisions.

‘Yesterday at the board meeting I approved the requirements [for the club] to be part of a European Super League,’ Bartomeu said.

‘The European Club Super League will guarantee sustainability to the club and ensure it continues to belong to the members.

LaLiga chief Tebas has stuck the boot in on Bartomeu as he was left unimpressed by his announcement that the club plans to play in a ‘phantom’ European Super League.

‘Unlucky Josep Bartomeu, announcing on his last day the participation in a phantom competition which would lead to ruin for Barcelona, and confirms their ignorance in the football industry,’ Tebas said on social media.

‘It is a sad end for a president who had successes and lately, errors.’

The European Super League competition is expected to involve between 16 and 18 teams, and will be played at midweek during the normal European club season.

Bartomeu had faced several calls to step down from the Catalans hierarchy after several controversies over the summer, including the public fall-out with Lionel Messi which nearly resulted in the star exiting the club.
