Jamie Redknapp unimpressed by Manchester City duo Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy after Leeds scare

Jamie Redknapp had no doubts over the culprits for Manchester City‘s struggles at Leeds, slamming full-backs Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy.

City left Elland Road with a point after Raheem Sterling‘s opener, scored amid early City dominance, was cancelled-out by Rodrigo’s tap-in during a period of end-to-end chaos.

Pep Guadriola’s side lost control of the game approaching half-time and looked overrun at times, with both Mendy and Walker caught out for dangerous errors.

‘The mistakes came from the full-backs today,’ Redknapp said on Sky Sports.

‘I thought Dias made some great challenges and was very composed, Laporte was caught out a couple of times but that’s got the making of a good partnership.

‘It’s just the full-backs time after time making mistakes, getting done one-on-one.’

City were hoping to bounce-back from a humiliating 5-2 defeat to Leicester last week but despite their attack looking sharp, Leeds exposed the same issues at the back.

With Liverpool building an unbeaten run at the start of the season once again, time is slipping away from Guardiola to repair the Citizens’ leaks.

‘Watching a lot of City games I’m positive about how expansive they’re playing,’ former City defender Micah Richards added.

‘But there seems to be a lot of defensive mistakes creeping in and it keeps happening week in and week out.

‘If they want to be challenging for the top they need to eradicate them.’

Jorginho moonlighting as Thiago Silva’s English teacher in bid to KO Chelsea’s defensive woes with ‘man on’ and ‘drop’

JORGINHO has taken on extra work as Thiago Silva’s English teacher to help the Brazilian superstar settle in at Chelsea.

Brazil-born Italian Jorginho also acts as unofficial translator in the dressing room — and it is helping the team iron out defensive woes.

Thiago, 36, was signed on a free in the summer from Paris Saint-Germain and is seen as a key figure in the back line even though his knowledge of English is minimal.

Midfielder Jorginho, 28, said: “When he has some questions or some doubts he asks me and I try to help him if I can, because my English is not that great.

“I have taught him ‘man on’, ‘turn’ or if he is on the other side ‘switch play’. Things that you need on the pitch. ‘Man on’, ‘drop’ or ‘up’.

“We try to help each other. That’s what you do on and off the pitch.

“He is happy here. He is a big personality, a big player with lots of experience.

“He is helping all of us as a group, the younger players, everyone.

“He finds a way to communicate, whether it is with his hands or he speaks to me and I give the information to the other guys.  We find a way.”

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard revealed this week he communicates with Portuguese-speaker Thiago via an interpreter but that the pair already have a solid working relationship.

He will have to be managed carefully due to his age but he played a huge role in Tuesday’s stalemate in the Champions League against Sevilla. It was the first goalless draw of Lampard’s 64-game reign.

Chelsea go to Manchester United on Saturday to avenge a 4-0 pummeling in Lamps’ first Premier League match as manager.

Jorginho said: “We are trying to be a solid team, not conceding so many goals. We need to work on that but it is difficult.

“Goals and small details can make the difference at the end.

“We have to work on other things to get better but we are on the right way I think.

“We must focus on defending inside the box, how to press and don’t switch off on set-plays.

“These details make a big difference. We need to be aware all the time. We are trying to do that.

“Thiago helped a lot, talking a lot. Defensively he has massive experience and he knows about football tactically so he is helping all of us so much.

“He has played at a high level for a long time. I think it is easy to see he is a great player on the pitch.”

FT: AJAX 0-1 LIVERPOOL

Brilliant result for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, with the week they’ve had with injuries, getting off to a winning start and a clean sheet was just what the doctor ordered!

Ajax came at Liverpool in the second half but much like the first half, there was no end product when it really mattered.

Klopp wasn’t taking any risks with his fabulous front three, taking them off for Jota, Minamino and Shaqiri.

The switch of attackers didn’t really stop Liverpool from playing the way they wanted to play.

Jota and co did a good job of dropping deep and catching Ajax on a quick counter attack and it even created chances to extend the Reds lead, notably at the end when Wijnaldum was picked out with a wonderful ball by Jota.

Liverpool pick up all three points and it’s a winning start to the 2020-21 Champions League campaign.

manchester city 3 1 fc porto ferran torres second club goal adds to ilkay gundogans wonderstrike

Manchester City were rescued by a wonderstrike from Ilkay Gundogan and a second club goal for new signing Ferran Torres after starting badly on Wednesday night.

City fell behind after 14 minutes when Luis Diaz was able to cut across the home defence before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Ederson.

But Pep Guardiola‘s side responded when Sergio Aguero struck from the penalty spot after Pepe had fouled Raheem Sterling.

Gundogan fired City into the lead with a fine free-kick from 25 yards before Torres added gloss.
