Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists defender Dejan Lovren still has an important part to play amid speculation over his future.

Zenit St Petersburg have been linked with a move for the centre-back, hoping for a cut-price deal. The Croatian is out of contract next summer but the Reds have an option to extend his current deal by 12 months.

It looks like they will do that and whether it is to safeguard his transfer fee or to utilise him until 2022 Klopp believes the 31-year-old, who due to injury and the form of Joe Gomez and Joel Matip has made only 15 appearances this season, can offer something.

‘He has been injured a couple of times (this season) and wasn’t available but Dejan played outstanding games for us,’ said the German.

‘He is a very important part of the squad. We have four centre-halves and we play usually with two of them, but we have needed all four always.

‘Dejan has a very important role for us. He has played in a Champions League final, in a lot of big games, he is a very reliable player.

‘There is a value to his experience, absolutely. Since I’ve been in here, Dejan was always either in the team, close to the team or not available.

‘There was never anything else, we have never had any problems.

‘There is nothing to discuss in public about his contract situation. The situation is absolutely clear – Dejan is a player of LFC and we need him.

‘You need the quality we have at centre-half to be successful.’

While Lovren’s future may be far from clear there is no doubt about the longevity of Liverpool’s famed front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Ahead of the trip to Arsenal Salah needs just one goal to become the first Liverpool player since Roger Hunt in 1965-66 – and only the fourth in the club’s history – to register 20 league goals in three successive seasons.

Salah, who is set to play his 150th match for the club, and Mane are the first pair of Liverpool players since Hunt and Ian St John in 1963-64 to score 20 goals in all competitions for three consecutive campaigns.

And while Firmino has not had his best season in front of goal Klopp has previously praised the work he does which allows his fellow forwards to benefit.

‘You cannot change the world alone but together with the right people around you, you have a better chance to do it,’ he said of Salah’s contribution of 94 goals in 149 games so far.

‘I was very positive in the moment when it was clear that we signed him. I remember our talk, when we first met face to face, when we spoke: ‘What’s your favourite position?’, ‘It would be right wing, but Sadio Mane is playing there and he played a pretty good season.’ ‘Yes, he does, but he can play the other wing as well.’

‘That was pretty much the start. The idea was clear how we want to play with the boys up front, but it worked out in a manner which we couldn’t have expected.

‘They scored now (nearly) 250 goals since, that’s an incredible number.’

New Barca boss Ronald Koeman decided the former Liverpool striker was not in his plans for the future.

Suarez gave a tearful exit interview on Thursday, where he spoke of the move coming as a ‘surprise’ before thanking Barcelona for ‘having faith in me’.

He then made his way to the Barca dressing room to clear out his locker for the final time.

A photo of him was on the front, with Sergio Busquets having the locker to the right.

Suarez posed in front of the metal cabinet before his three children, Delfina, Benjamin and Lautaro.

Speaking about his move to Atletico, Suarez said: “This is such a surprise, I didn’t really have anything prepared.

“I just want to say the club has always had so much confidence in me since 2014 when they signed me.

“In the conditions that I came here, surrounding me from the mistake that I made with the confidence they had in me, it wasn’t easy to accept.

“The coaches and my team-mates, the way they accepted me when I came, it was amazing.”

At his last press conference as a Barcelona player, Suarez also revealed how he was told to ‘watch out’ for Lionel Messi when he joined the Catalans.

He went on to become best friends with the Argentinian.

Suarez added: “Many people tell you about Messi when you arrive at Barca.

“They say, ‘watch out for Leo’, he’s another striker. [But] many things are invented.”

It has been revealed that Suarez will reportedly face a SIXTY PER CENT wage drop after joining Atletico Madrid.

Marca reports that Suarez will earn around £8.3million a year with his new club.

That works out at £160,000 a week – he was earning a whopping £405,000 a week at the Nou Camp.

But Barca have been very vocal about how the coronavirus pandemic has hit their finances.

And seemingly the time is right to get Suarez off the wage bill.

Suarez leaves the Camp Nou as the club’s third-highest goalscorer of all time following 198 strikes in 283 appearances for the club.

Since his move from Liverpool, he has also won four LaLiga titles, four Copa del Reys and the Champions League and Club World Cup in 2015.

questions remain over toronto wolfpacks figures ahead of crucial meeting

TORONTO Wolfpack must convince Super League clubs their figures are serious as they battle to stay in Super League.

For one doubter has dubbed them ‘a great work of fiction.’

And SunSport understands the Canadian side has asked for £2 million worth of central distribution, which is MORE than some other sides already get!

They are also believed to have factored in a forecast of up to £500,000 a year from a private equity investment deal into Super League, which has not yet happened.

Wolfpack sources also suspect they may not even get a definite yes to remaining in Super League today – the best they can get is asking prospective owner Carlo LiVolsi to present to the other 11 sides next week.

Clubs and the Super League board meet today to decide on whether to give Toronto the chance to stay in the top flight after withdrawing for 2020 or kick them out.

Toronto need seven votes of 13 – all 11 clubs plus the Super League governing body and the Rugby Football League get one – to progress.

However, the 80-page document they submitted, plus the extra information they were asked for, has not answered all doubts.

LiVolsi’s aims are also being questioned – does he have rugby league’s future at heart or is he just looking for something to launch a range of grooming products?

SunSport has been told by one club boss they also doubt the figures over their projected revenues in the paperwork.

LiVolsi has promised to pay all owed wages to players – four months’ worth totalling more than £500,000 – if he is given the go ahead to take Toronto over.

And boss Brian McDermott is in regular contact with players currently under contract, including Sonny Bill Williams, while those who have agreed to join are also still committed.

A major PR offensive has been launched, highlighting the fact the Wolfpack attracted crowds of 10,000 on the other side of the Atlantic, where they have not been able to play because of Covid-19.

However, the other clubs and the governing bodies want proof a second chance will work and not leave them embarrassed again further down the line.

Back at NXT TakeOver: In Your House, the future Hall of Famer lost her NXT Title to Io Shirai during a triple threat match that also included Rhea Ripley.

Following that defeat it was revealed the 5ft 10in ‘Queen’ was taking time off to address an issue with her breast implants.

Now the star has provided her Instagram followers with an update on her condition – and it was a positive one.

Sharing a selfie snap of her looking in the mirror and showing off her abs, Charlotte wrote that it was her first time at the gym for eight weeks and that she’s “ready to find [her] groove again.”

It has not been confirmed when the most decorated women’s champ in WWE history would head back to the ring.

Although her ‘Nature Boy’ father did claim she would likely be gone for a year after undergoing the knife.

He said: “She’s fine, but this time she knows, and her personal physician and the company doctors have reinforced it, that she can’t hurry the process.

“Otherwise, we’re going to be right back. With the stuff that she does, the moonsaults and the way she lands and taking knees and everything, she’s got to be a 100 per cent.”

However, Charlotte did move to reassure fans her absence will not be that long.

She recently tweeted that she will be competing with her fellow females again in time for WrestleMania 37.

That event is currently scheduled to take place in March.
