LIFE’S a beach. Until it isn’t.

Laytown’s unique beach meeting in September has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The action usually takes place on Laytown strand, with the racecourse set up on the beach once the tide recedes for what is a popular annual event.

However, organisers have been forced to call off this year’s fixture, scheduled for September 1, due to concerns about how social distancing measures could be enforced.

Joe Collins, Laytown Races chairman, said: “Laytown Races is in a unique position as we race under temporary facilities and our racetrack on the beach is a fantastic amenity, open to the public.

“As the health and safety of Laytown and Bettystown residents, sponsors, racegoers, jockeys, trainers, stable staff and racecourse staff is our number one priority, the committee had too many concerns about how we could implement social distancing during racing, especially on the beach and in the village.

“After consultation with all the key stakeholders including the Gardai, Horse Racing Ireland and the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Body, the committee reached the very difficult decision to cancel our 2020 race meeting, but we are already looking forward to welcoming everyone back to our 2021 race fixture.”

All customers who have already paid for admission tickets and corporate hospitality will receive a full refund in due course, the committee added.

Man Utd ‘set to bid for Tottenham transfer target Arkadiusz Milik’ as Solskjaer ignores defensive reinforcements

man utd set to bid for tottenham transfer target arkadiusz milik as solskjaer ignores defensive reinforcements scaled

MANCHESTER UNITED are ready move for Tottenham target Arkadiusz Milik after boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ruled out further defensive signings.

According to reports in Italy, Man Utd have held talks over a potential move for the Napoli forward.

The 26-year-old has scored 48 goals in 122 appearances for Gil Azzurri, and is yet to make an appearance this season after being left out of the opening two fixtures this season.

United boss Solskjaer has been targeting attacking reinforcements since the transfer window opened at the end of last season.

Jadon Sancho has been at the top of the managers wish list, but should they fail to land their top target, Milik could be the man they move for instead.

Solskjaer has recently ruled out the need for defensive signings saying, ‘we’ve got good enough centre-backs here’ despite poor defensive showings in their opening two Premier League fixtures.

Speaking after his sides controversial win against Brighton, Solskjaer said: “We’ve got many defenders here and I put Eric [Bailly] on to bolster the defence, following the runs of [Leandro] Trossard and [Neal] Maupay.

“For me, we’ve got enough good centre-backs here at the moment.

“When you concede chances and concede goals, there are two different things you can look at – it’s either the team shape, or are there any individual mistakes.

“We’re not in our best shape of form, our shape isn’t there, we’re not sharp enough to stop crosses or follow the runs.

“We’re a little bit behind, that’s more structural mistakes than individual mistakes. I thought Victor [Lindelof] did well today.”

Milik has been linked with a host of clubs this summer, including Roma and Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham.

Mourinho wants to sign a striker to shift some weight off star man Harry Kane, who for some time has been the only reliable out and out striker at the club.

Tottenham have already held talks with Napoli over a potential deal for Milik, but according to Rai Sports reporter Ciro Venerato, United have joined the race for the forward.

Venerato told Radio Kiss Kiss: “An intermediary told me that there’s informal talks with Leipzig, Manchester City, Manchester United, Fulham and Tottenham.

“The latter are the most reliable track, but the formula requested by Napoli does not convince Mourinho.”

ASTON VILLA are keen to bring Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek in on loan as well as Copenhagen’s Victor Nelsson in a £9million deal.

Villa manager Dean Smith is keen to bolster his midfield and defensive options ahead of the October 5 transfer deadline.

Aston Villa are eyeing a move for Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and a bid for Copenhagen’s Victor Nelsson.

Chelsea midfielder Loftus-Cheek is on Villa’s radar with a potential loan deal on the cards for the 24-year-old.

Loftus-Cheek is also being tracked by West Ham and Southampton, so Aston Villa face some stiff competition if they’re going to try and get this deal done.

The ten-capped England international has struggled to make a consistent impact at Chelsea, dealing with his fair share of injury struggles.

With Loftus-Cheek playing only ten first team games since the start of last season, and the big money acquisitions in Kai Havertz and Chelsea readying a bid for West Ham’s Declan Rice, a loan move could be a good career choice for the midfielder.

Loftus-Cheek made his professional Chelsea debut as a teenager back in 2014, replacing Cesc Fabregas for the final seven minutes of their Uefa Champions League group stage match against Sporting Lisbon.

Meanwhile, Villa have also offered £9m for Copenhagen defender Victor Nelsson.

The Danish Under-21 centre-back is keen on a move to the Premier League but Villa might have to increase their bid.

Nelsson, 21, has four years left on his current deal and is also Copenhagen’s skipper. Celtic have also been interested in the player.

Already this month, Villa boss Dean Smith has spent nearly £80million on players to boost the club’s survival chances.

They have snapped up Bournemouth Matty Cash, Brentford striker Ollie Watkins, Arsenal keeper Emi Martinez and Bertrand Traore of Lyon.

MANCHESTER CITY will QUINTUPLE Phil Foden’s salary to £150,000 a week despite his Iceland hotel shame, according to reports.

The 20-year-old England international was sent home in disgrace by Gareth Southgate, alongside Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood, for breaking Covid-19 rules by hooking up with local girls in their hotel.

While on Nations League duty, Foden ‘left the hotel bedroom VERY happy’ according to Icelandic stunner Lara Clausen and now he will have more to smile about thanks to a huge pay rise.

90min.com reports Foden will collect FIVE times his current £30,000 a week wages thanks to a bumper new contract.

He signed his last deal in 2018 and it runs until 2024.

But he is set to be rewarded for his on-field excellence having progressed from the Citizens’ academy.

It is thought Foden, who has a child with long-term partner Rebecca Cooke, could put pen to paper in the coming weeks.

City boss Pep Guardiola has gradually made Foden a first-team mainstay since handing him his Premier League debut as a 17-year-old in December 2017.

Foden issued a grovelling apology after his antics in Iceland.

And the youngster seemingly has managed to put his off-field scrapes behind him after hitting the ground running in the 2020-21 campaign.

Guardiola has picked Foden in the starting XI in all three of City’s opening games, including Sunday’s match against Leicester at the Etihad.

He bagged goals against both Wolves in the league and Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup to make it two from two and ensure he got off to a flyer.

Foden has shown his worth to Etihad bosses having made 76 senior appearances with a return of 17 goals and 13 assists.
