lazio end 13 year wait for champions league football after defeating cagliari in serie a

Lazio claimed a Champions League place, ending a 13-year absence from the competition, when they came from behind to beat Cagliari 2-1 in Serie A on Thursday following five games without a win.

Serie A leading scorer Ciro Immobile netted the winner with his 31st goal of the season as Lazio, fourth with 72 points, clinched the final Italian place in Europe’s elite club competition next season.

The strike saw the 30-year-old Italy international take the lead over Cristiano Ronaldo in the race for the Serie A golden boot, with the Juventus star stuck on 30 after failing to find the net in his side’s 2-1 defeat to Udinese.

With three games left to play, Lazio still have a mathematical chance of overhauling leaders Juventus, who and have 80 points.

‘I’m happy, it’s right to celebrate reaching an important target for us which we achieved three matches in advance,’ said Immobile.

‘We are proud despite the difficulties we have faced after lockdown. This is something that Lazio haven’t achieved for years.’

Cagliari forward Joao Pedro scored with a stunning free kick early on but it was disallowed because the referee had signalled it was indirect.

Lazio were kept at bay by Cagliari goalkeeper Alessio Cragno and were caught out when Giovanni Simeone gave the Sardinians the lead with a deflected shot at the end of the first half.

However, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic volleyed Lazio level two minutes after the break and, after hitting the post with a shot on the turn, Immobile latched on to Luis Alberto’s through ball to slot the winner past Cragno on the hour.

triathlete stops on finish line to let rival beat him after he heads wrong way in stunning act of sportsmanship

SPANISH athlete Diego Mentrida surrendered his spot on the podium as he allowed James Teagle to pass him on the finish line at the Santander Triathlon.

In one of the most stunning acts of sportsmanship, Mentrida spotted Teagle taking a wrong turn near the end of the race in Spain.

Teagle ran towards a group of spectators inside a fenced off area on the last corner, but the 21-year-old was quick to spot his mistake.

He then stopped just short of the finish line to allow Teagle to come home in third place – much to the shock of the Brit star who shook his hand in disbelief.

Speaking to Eurosport after the race, Mentrida stated that it wouldn’t have been fair of him to finish in front of Teagle.

He said: “When I saw that he had missed the route, I just stopped.

“James deserved this medal. He didn’t notice the signs or they were misaligned.

“I do not know, but the second time I would have acted the same.”

The sporting world was quick to praise Mentrida, as Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian tweeted: “The real values of SPORT in a single gesture.

“James Teagle got confused on the last corner and was passed by Diego Mentrida who did this… #Respect#FairPlay.”

Another commented: “That is sportsmanship personified.”

A third added: “You could argue that the British runner should’ve known the course as a professional.

“But that’s moot. This is sportsmanship, its about doing the right thing when you don’t have to.”

One simply stated: “Fourth in place, first in life. My kind of human right there.”

Meanwhile another quipped: “Now, that’s a dude I’d want my daughter marrying. Honorable man before competitor.”

DONNY’S DISAPPOINTED

Donny Van de Beek reckons United’s performance was “not good enough” following the team’s 3-1 surprise loss to Crystal.

The Old Trafford debutant scored his side’s only goal in his first Premier League game for the Red Devils.

The former Ajax came off the bench to net for United in the 67th minute.

Van de Beek told MUTV: “‘That was not good enough today. Last week in training, it looked really good.

“There was lots of quality and we played fast but today we played too slowly.”
