Manchester United stars’ holiday gaffe: Red Devils’ Europa League bid at risk

manchester united stars holiday gaffe red devils europa league bid at risk

Manchester United have put the club’s Europa League campaign at risk by allowing their stars to go on holiday abroad this week.

Nemanja Matic, Victor Lindelof and Odion Ighalo are among the players who jetted off following the end of the Premier League season last weekend ahead of United’s return to European action.

The UK re-imposed 14-day quarantine restrictions on all travellers from Spain last week – catching thousands of British tourists by surprise – and Prime Minister Boris Johnson has warned that the travel corridor could be closed on other European countries at short notice amid fears over a second wave of the coronavirus.

Although United are 5-0 up against LASK Linz and certain to progress in next week’s Europa League round of 16 second leg at Old Trafford, the quarter-final is on August 10 which means that any players forced to self-isolate for 14 days would be unavailable for that game as well.

United’s squad are due to report back at the end of the week, although it is unclear how many more of them have travelled abroad.

United insist that no players have gone to countries on the UK’s red list, having checked with the club beforehand and amended their plans accordingly. United also say they will continue to monitor the situation and contact the players if it changes.

At best, however, it would seem to be a needless risk at a time when the Government is warning of wider travel restrictions to contain another Covid-19 outbreak and the holiday season teeters on the brink of collapse.

Lindelof’s wife Maja posted pictures of their family in France, one of the countries most in danger of joining Spain on the red list. Matic’s partner Aleksandra Pavic also shared photos of them on board a private jet, while Ighalo was photographed on a yacht abroad.

The Nigeria striker had to quarantine for two weeks after joining United on loan in February from Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua.

Ighalo was unable to train with his new team-mates at Carrington and missed a training camp in Marbella where United were forced to switch hotels because Chinese club Dalian Yifang had stayed there the previous week.

United’s Europa League quarter-final will be staged in Cologne and concern is already growing there after the German health agency said on Tuesday that it was worried over a sharp rise in the number of new cases in the country.

United will continue to liaise with UEFA who issued a statement saying: ‘UEFA is in contact with the relevant German authorities and we envisage the UEFA Europa League final eight tournament going ahead as planned.’

Real Madrid striker Mariano Diaz will miss their Champions League second leg with Manchester City a week on Friday after testing positive for coronavirus on his return from holiday.

City have decided against giving their players a break and continued to train as usual this week, although their tie against Madrid is more finely balanced at 2-1 than United’s second leg with LASK.

leeds fans in stitches as hilarious stars faces in new pes 21 update are revealed and look nothing like players

LEEDS fans reacted in hilarious fashion as their players’ faces look nothing like the real thing in the latest PES 21 update.

Images from the iconic football video game franchise emerged this afternoon and the Whites stars’ likenesses were a little wide of the mark.

England international Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford’s virtual figures caused the biggest stirs.

Phillips’ character does not have his signature top knot and the facial hair is nowhere near as thick as the real thing.

And team-mate Bamford’s odd looking avatar was described by one fan as looking “like no man who has ever existed”.

Having seen the in-game version of the striker, Leeds fan Adam – followed by several cry laughing emojis – wrote: “PES 21’s version of Patrick Bamford has absolutely done me.”

One fan quipped: “Bet his ma can’t even tell the difference.”

And another joked: “Looks more like Dirk Kuyt then Paddy Bammoz.”

Fans also questioned Luka Ayling’s character with the defender’s facial features unrecognisable from the real thing.

Elsewhere, Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa defended his decision to make goalkeeper Kiko Casilla captain despite the stopper’s racism shame.

The Spanish keeper was given an eight-match ban last season for racially abusing Charlton’s Jonathan Leko.

Many Leeds fans were up in arms when the 33-year-old, who is now second-choice to Illan Meslier, was given the armband for Wednesday’s penalties defeat.

But Bielsa said the rest of the team approved it.

Then he questioned how many supporters opposed the choice.

The Leeds boss said: “His team-mates think he deserved to be the captain and we have to listen to those messages.

“The players see in their captain someone they feel can represent them.

“Surely those who judge Kiko ignore a lot of the things his team-mates see in him?

“Should I have contemplated whether to pick him as captain by taking the opinions of the fans or players?”

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho will not confirm if Dele Alli is in future plans

The 2.50pm at Newbury is the Group 3 Legacy Cup Stakes over 1m3f which has been seen as an Arc trial in the past.

EXTRA ELUSIVE is improving fast now for Roger Charlton and Hollie Doyle has struck up a good relationship with the five-year-old.

When he was beaten at Newbury three runs ago Charlton told me his was gutted for the horse as he deserved a decent prize.

He’s now unstoppable! He should be suited to the way this race is run and a massive chance.

Matt Chapman’s ITV Racing tips:

  • 1.40 Newbury – Tis Marvellous
  • 2.15 Newbury – Tenbury Wells (EW)
  • 2.50 Newbury – EXTRA ELUSIVE NAP
  • 3.25 Newbury – Fivethousandtoone
  • 1.55 Ayr – Addeybb
  • 2.30 Ayr – Rathbone (EW)
  • 3.05 Ayr – Umm Kulthum
