Manchester United’s under-fire skipper Harry Maguire will NOT ask boss Solskjaer for a break

Harry Maguire has no intention of asking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for a break, leaving any decision over a possible lay-off firmly with the Manchester United boss.

The world’s most expensive defender has suffered a traumatic three months – culminating in his first half red card in England’s defeat to Denmark on Wednesday night.

Maguire’s performances have been heavily criticised since the start of the season prompting fears he is psychologically drained after being found guilty on three separate charges following an alleged violent altercation whilst on holiday in Mykonos in August.

The United skipper publicly and privately maintains his innocence and has successfully applied for a re-trial which is expected to be heard next year.

United legend Rio Ferdinand suggested on Thursday that the £80million man would benefit from being taken out of the firing line.

But Sportsmail understands Maguire is fully committed to the United cause and is not considering a break from the game.

That means Solskjaer, who has supported Maguire during these difficult times, will make the decision on whether the centre-back should be granted a mid-season break.

With important Premier League and Champions League matches on the horizon it remains to be seen whether the United boss would consider such an option.

Even after his Wembley nightmare, Maguire was said to be level-headed as he returned to club duty on Thursday acknowledging he is suffering from a downturn in form.

Like all players, Maguire had a short summer break of around two weeks.

His time-off was disrupted by the incident in Greece and the subsequent court proceedings, causing him to miss part of his summer training schedule – though there is no suggestion he is lacking match-fitness.

Ferdinand said: ‘I think it’s obvious to see he’s going through a bit of a bad spell at the moment.

‘In these situations you sometimes need to be taken out of the oven.

‘Ole has a big job on his hands and I think quite an important role to play in this. Whether maybe it’s time to give him a little rest, let him gather himself.

‘I know a lot of players will see that as an absolute stain on their resume but it’s sometimes something that’s needed. I definitely benefited from it and it’s maybe something Ole and his management team may look at.

‘If you can control the narrative and you’re very clear on what you’re going to do then I think it makes it very easy.

‘I don’t think with the pandemic around at the moment he’s going to be able to go to the beach any time soon because he needs to be safe.

‘But I don’t think it matters where you are, it’s about being taken out of the firing line and having time and a chance to sit down and reflect.’

Khabib was left in tears after beating Gaethje, as he dedicated the win to his dad Abdulmanap, who passed away aged 57 due to coronavirus in July.

But he is unable to fight on without his influential father and mentor, who he had trained with since the age of eight.

Nurmagomedov said: “Today, I want to say this is my last fight.

“When UFC called me about Justin, I spoke with my mother and I said I wouldn’t fight without father.

“And if I give my word, then I must follow it. UFC must make me No1 pound for pound fighter in the world, because I deserve it.

“I want to say thank you to Lorenzo and Dana. All this UFC team, everybody, they made a great show.

“Thank you to Justin, thank you brother. I know how you take care of your people.

“One day something will happen for you, you never know what is going to happen tomorrow. Today is my last fight here in the UFC.”
