mascherano compares barcelona icon messi to jordan after watching netflixs the last dance

Javier Mascherano has claimed that Barcelona star Lionel Messi is football’s version of Michael Jordan after watching some of Netflix‘s documentary miniseries The Last Dance.

The former Barcelona midfielder and centre-back played with Messi for eight years at the Camp Nou and with the Argentina national team, sampling first-hand the ‘competitive animal’ his compatriot is on the field.

That desire to win at all costs was also in evidence on the final day of the 2019/20 LaLiga season, when Messi lambasted his team-mates for conceding the title to rivals Real Madrid

The Last Dance also portrayed Jordan as a ruthless – and occasionally divisive – winner in the Netflix series, causing high tension within the Chicago Bulls dressing room.

But Mascherano believes the two are similar in their competitive attitudes but described Messi as more down to earth.

‘The one who plays at Barcelona is the closest thing [to Jordan],’ Mascherano told Fox Sports’ 90 Minutos, as reported by the newspaper Ole.

‘At least in the way they compete. It’s another sport. Relationships are different.

‘For the little I saw of the series [the Chicago Bulls documentary on Netflix], Leo is more down to earth and natural.

‘But they are competitive animals, that’s why they have had so many years at the top.

‘Leo is perhaps more of a human. But well, obviously, in borderline situations there is a look, a shout or something.

‘These are collective sports. As much as you are the best, you need those around you. You just can’t do everything.

‘To keep your place, it’s important to have the number one, but your teammates must play their part.’

Jordan won six NBA titles and to this day holds countless records with the Bulls, but had personal and many competitive rivalries with the likes of Isiah Thomas and Karl Malone.

Messi meanwhile has won 10 LaLiga titles and four Champions Leagues and shared a rivlary with Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo during his spell in Spain.

Sections of the Real Madrid dressing room were reportedly relieved at Gareth Bale‘s loan departure.

Bale is set to rejoin Tottenham on loan for the season, but his departure wasn’t a particularly solemn occasion for much of the Real squad, as reported by AS.

The report states that Bale didn’t say goodbye personally to all of his Real team-mates as he collected his belongings prior to his return to the Premier League.

Bale had fallen out of favour at Real; often being overlooked by Zinedine Zidane, and is said to have not had much of a connection with some of his colleagues.

During his seven years at The Bernabeu Bale has won an array of trophies including four Champions Leagues, two La Liga titles, the Copa del Rey and three Club World Cups.

He has scored 105 goals in 251 games for the club but made just 16 league appearances last season and was desperate to play regularly again.

Bale is set to earn over £13million in wages as part of his loan deal and he is set to be joined at Tottenham by Sergio Reguilon, who was on loan at Sevilla from Real last season.

During his initial spell at Tottenham Bale became a club hero despite a slow start and he was outstanding during the 2012-13 campaign, scoring 21 goals in the Premier League.

jurgen klopp is delighted with thiago signing and reveals he could make his debut against chelsea

Jurgen Klopp is delighted that Liverpool have confirmed the signing of midfielder Thiago from Bayern Munich and has revealed he could play against title rivals Chelsea on Sunday.

The Spain international has moved to Anfield for a fee worth £25million including add-ons.

And Liverpool boss, Klopp, has revealed he can’t wait to see him in action.

‘Great! Absolutely great. I’m really happy that it finally worked out and we could just do it, ‘ Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com

‘It’s very exceptional because in our situation, a lot of people around us talk constantly – ‘What are you doing? – bam, bam, bam. Then preparing something like this, working on all different things you have to work in a transfer like this – with thinking about a player like him already is a joy, to be honest, because it gives us obviously some options. T

‘Then you get in contact with the boy and then you realise, OK, he obviously likes this project as well pretty much, even before he is here, which was really nice. I learned more and more about him as a person; the player I knew before, the person I learned.

‘So I’m really happy to bring this wonderful person in as an add-on to the squad, which is just good for football reasons – but for all the other reasons as well. So, yeah, absolutely happy that he’s here.’

It might not be long before Liverpool fans see Thiago in action as Klopp has hinted he could be involved against Frank Lampard’s side on Sunday.

‘I didn’t make the squad now for Sunday. We will see what we can do. I didn’t meet him now, we had only phone calls and exchanged messages.

‘So, let’s have a look how he feels. Around a transfer like this the days are pretty busy with things you usually don’t do. If he looks alright, we will find the right place for him.’

Michael Edwards, Liverpool’s sporting director, had been in discussions with his counterpart at Bayern, Hasan Salihamidzic, and he made a breakthrough, with Liverpool guaranteeing to pay a minimum of £20m over the next four years.

Should Liverpool win the Premier League or Champions League again before 2024, they will have to pay Bayern another £5m and there are other bonuses should he win any individual honours during his time at Anfield.

Thiago arrived on Merseyside via a private flight to begin his medical on Thursday and now the formalities have been completed.

The 29-year-old was in talks with Bayern over a new contract but halted proceedings after deciding he wanted a new challenge.

chelsea boss frank lampard hails leader thiago silva

Frank Lampard has hailed the leadership qualities of Chelsea‘s summer signing Thiago Silva, insisting his presence can already be felt around the club.

The Brazil international moved to Stamford Bridge on a free transfer earlier this summer after leaving Paris Saint-Germain.

Silva took part in his first training session as a Chelsea player on Thursday after having extra time off following PSG’s Champions League final defeat by Bayern Munich.

It remains to be seen whether Lampard will play the 35-year-old against Premier League champions Liverpool on Sunday but the Chelsea boss was clearly impressed by his new man.

Lampard said: ‘Certainly a leader. He’ll bring that with him by nature.

‘He doesn’t speak the language that great at the moment but we’ll work on that.

‘By presence, by attitude in training and quality of the player, he commands respect and it is great having him around. That’s all you can ask for as a coach.’

The game against Liverpool offers an early test of Chelsea’s title credentials this season after they spent around £230m in the transfer window to strengthen.

It will also be the first game that Lampard locks horns with Jurgen Klopp since the pair were involved in an angry confrontation at Anfield back in July.

Lampard accused Klopp’s coaching staff of crossing a line and showing a lack of respect by leaping up, shouting and smirking at him during Chelsea’s 5-3 defeat at Anfield earlier this summer.

Klopp moved to clear the air in his press conference on Friday and Lampard echoed those sentiments, insisting he had nothing but respect for the German.

Lampard added: ‘Against Liverpool they are always going to give you a tough match.

‘We have to push our limits to close that gap and that’s the challenge in front of us.

‘I reiterate what Klopp said. I’ve got huge respect for him as a manager and what he’s done at Liverpool.

‘That’s on him as the focal point of the club and the talent they’ve brought in.

‘The nature of the 90 minutes can always boil over but the respect I have for Klopp will never change.’
