Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eager to maintain the conveyor belt of young talent to the Manchester United first team and plans to add ‘one or two more’ from the academy next season.

Solskjaer has placed great importance in bringing through teenagers from the academy set-up to his senior squad and wants to continue the pathway.

Mason Greenwood, the 18-year-old striker, has been a revelation and Brandon Williams, 19, has also garnered valuable experience at left-back.

The likes of Tahith Chong, James Garner and Angel Gomes have also enjoyed game time although the latter’s contract has run down.

Teden Mengo and Ethan Laird were in the squad to face Aston Villa with both 18-year-old’s the latest to be exposed to the first-team picture.

‘We just have to focus,’ Solskjaer said of United’s plans for next season. ‘I don’t think one second if any other team is worried about us, we have to worry about ourselves.

‘If we keep on improving and building an environment in the training ground and keep building on the culture, add one or two youngsters, maybe add players who can challenge those who we have got here.

‘Of course it’s exciting, but we can’t think that far. You don’t really have the time or focus.

‘You can’t think three months ahead now with players who are in and around the first-team.

‘Of course, there are youngsters who you know are going to go out on loan, that need exposure, game-time, but those who are in and around the first-team now, they only have one focus, and that’s Southampton, then it’s onto the next one. We need to finish the season strong.’

United have been on sensational form since the restart and will look to continue their push for Champions League football next season as they welcome Southampton on Monday night.

gary neville claims manchester united are never going to win the league with current defenders

Manchester United will not be able to win the Premier League with a centre back partnership of Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire, former England international Gary Neville has said.

United’s season got underway with a shock 3-1 defeat by Crystal Palace on Saturday, with Sweden international Lindelof culpable for all three goals.

United have been linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho but Neville believes manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should prioritise the signing of a versatile centre back.

‘We can talk about Sancho all we like but until United get a centre back who can run and defend one-on-ones they are never going to win the league,’ Neville, who won eight league titles at Old Trafford, told Sky Sports.

‘They are never going to win the Premier League with that centre back pairing.

‘They have to get a mobile, dominant centre half in alongside either Lindelof or Maguire.’

‘Over the years, the best centre back partnerships have always had that really quick one who has lightning pace to get across and snuff out the danger.

Lindelof and Maguire just don’t have that.’

United face Luton Town in the League Cup on Tuesday before returning to Premier League action with a trip to Brighton on Saturday.
