UFC: Khabib Nurmagomedov didn’t want to hurt Justin Gaethje by breaking his arm in front of parents

ufc khabib nurmagomedov didnt want to hurt justin gaethje by breaking his arm in front of parents

Khabib Nurmagomedov showed incredible mercy in the heat of his fight with Justing Gaethje as he did not want to hurt the American in front of his parents, according to Daniel Cormier.

Gaethje had the UFC fly out his mother and father especially for the UFC 254 showdown on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi as it was the culmination of years of hard work they’d supported.

And Cormier, who is a close friend and former team-mates of Khabib, says the Russian told him he would not inflict unnecessary pain in front of Carolina and John Ray Gaethje, believing their son would be too stubborn to tap out.

Earlier in the fight, having taken the No 1 contender down, Khabib was in position for an armbar but the first round ended to interrupt him.

He thought Gaethje may well allow him to break the arm before submitting so Khabib transitioned into a triangle choke in the second round.

Cormier explained on ‘DC & Helwani’: ‘He [Khabib] told me when he was watching interviews over the course of the week, he saw that Justin said he would never tap.

‘So when he was going to the submission, he said it was his dad’s favourite submission, get into the mount position, go into the armbar and then the triangle.

‘When he got there, he was going to do the armbar but had heard Justin all week say that he wouldn’t tap and he didn’t want to hurt him in front of his parents.

Ultimately Gaethje tapped out anyway but the referee missed it and he went to sleep

‘So he went for the triangle and kind of put him to sleep.’

Cormier continued: ‘I promise you, he actually told me that.

‘He goes I didn’t wanna hurt him in front of his parents so I said if I put him in the triangle and if he goes to sleep, he’ll go to sleep get up and be fine.

‘That’s exactly what he told me, crazy right?

‘He didn’t wanna break his arm because if Justin isn’t gonna tap, you’ve got to break it and he didn’t want to do that in front of his mom and dad.’

Gaethje did in fact tap out in the end but the referee missed it and he was choked out unconscious.

Khabib has always been a respectful fighter but if true, his thinking behind moving to a triangle rather than breaking Gaethje’s arm is a remarkable act of sportsmanship.

The Dagestani fighter announced his shock retirement from MMA after his win having conquered the division’s top contenders and moved to 29-0.

He promised his mother he would no longer fight on after this encounter without his late father Abdulmanap present. Abdulmanap died following complications after contracting coronavirus earlier this year.

Khabib banked £4.6m as a fight purse and will take home even more when it comes to bonuses and a share of the pay-per-view figures.

To make his victory even more impressive, UFC president Dana White revealed after the contest that the champion had endured a dreadful camp.

‘What this guy’s been through, we’re all lucky that we got to see him fight tonight,’ White said at the post-fight press conference.

‘And I’m hearing rumours of other things that I didn’t know about that you guys will hear about when he comes out later. Apparently, he was in the hospital. He broke his foot. Three weeks ago.

‘He has two broken toes and a bone in his foot that’s broken, or something like that. That’s what his corner was telling me. He is one of the toughest human beings on the planet and he’s the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world.’

Khabib stunned MMA fans and even his own head coach Javier Mendez with his retirement announcement afterwards.

Along with the promise to his mother, he cited media obligations, cutting weight and draining training as reasons for his exit from the sport in his prime. He had been tipped to have a megafight with Georges St-Pierre, another legend many consider to be the greatest of all time.

But that dream scenario for fans will no longer go ahead with Khabib walking away at the top of his game.

[Six Nations]: Ollie Lawrence could make England debut this weekend against Italy

six nations ollie lawrence could make england debut this weekend against italy

Ollie Lawrence has emerged as a rookie candidate to start for England in their Six Nations decider against Italy in Rome on Saturday, as Eddie Jones ponders a major midfield overhaul.

The 21-year-old Worcester centre appears to be in contention to make his Test debut at the Stadio Olimpico, in the absence of two stalwarts of the back line.

Jones confirmed yesterday that fly-half George Ford will not be available as he recovers from an achilles injury, while Manu Tuilagi is out for months after suffering a tear to the same part of his leg.

For so long, England’s 10-12-13 axis was in a permanent state of flux, but the endless rotations in that area had given way to a period of stability.

In the national team’s last 10 Tests, Ford, captain Owen Farrell and Tuilagi had started together eight times.

But now Jones is gearing up to make enforced changes for a match which England need to win with a bonus point to have any chance of claiming the championship title.

Youngster Lawrence has repeatedly demonstrated explosive power while catching the eye with Worcester and now appears to be regarded as someone who could deputise for Tuilagi as a destructive carrier who can off-load.

Judging by Jones’ comments yesterday, after naming a 36-man squad, the newcomer may even be in his thoughts for a starting role at inside centre on the basis that Farrell is likely to revert to fly-half in the absence of Ford.

He described Lawrence as a ‘player of great potential’ and when asked which centre position he regards as a natural fit for him, Jones said: ‘We were having a selection debate about the need for a passing 12.

‘I’d been watching a game that involved Jimmy Gopperth — a 10 who plays 12. So I asked our analyst to go away and look at how many times Jimmy passed to Malakai Fekitoa. It was zero. Very rarely do you see the passing sequence 10 to 12 to 13.

‘The romantics want to see that. I’ve come from a background where we would normally play a 10 at 12 and I would still like to have that in the team. But the notion that 12 passes to 13 is very rarely seen.

‘Watch the next game and see how many times it happens.

‘Basically centres, particularly with rush defence, are now running players — running backs. Their opportunity to pass is very rare but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be good passers.

‘If you pass the ball three times now, generally speaking you are going to have the defence on top of you. The ability to get a fourth pass in is very difficult.

‘You’ll see that most rugby, now, is one-pass rugby. You’ve only got 20 per cent for two or three passes. You don’t have to be Einstein to work out it doesn’t happen very often.

‘We’ll have to juggle things around and play slightly differently. We want to make sure we stay ahead of the game and we are trying to think of ways we can break down rush defences.’

If Jones is weighing up a power runner at 12, Lawrence would fit the bill — although it depends in part on the make-up of England’s back row and whether the recalled Joe Cokanasiga, Bath’s giant, Fiji-born wing, might be unleashed out wide.

The man in charge knows he needs enough carriers who can bust through the gainline and, without Tuilagi, he has a deficit in that regard.

There was some speculation yesterday that Wasps’ young playmaker Jacob Umaga could be pitched in to start at 10. But far more likely is that Farrell lines up there for his first appearance since being banned for a high tackle early last month.

The skipper may be short of game-time but Jones is not fazed in the slightest, saying: ‘He is the most professional player I have seen.

‘He is dedicated to his profession and works hard. I don’t know how many times Jonny Wilkinson has been in to do kicking with him. He is a guy that has this unbelievable desire to win.

‘He wants to play for England, he wants to be the best captain we have had and he wants to be the best 10 we have had, or best 12. Wherever he gets selected, he doesn’t mind.’

Jones was in trademark form yesterday — bluntly refusing to explain the omission of influential Exeter brothers Sam and Joe Simmonds while claiming that he sees struggling Northampton full back George Furbank as a potential Test No 10.

Predictably, he sought to play down the hype around Wasps flanker Jack Willis by arguing that he has much to prove in England training before he can be considered for a debut. That doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t happen, though.

england squad eddie jones orders squad to behave after barbarians players debacle

Eddie Jones has instructed his England squad to be on their best behaviour, after Sunday’s curtain-raiser was called off because a group of Barbarians players broke Covid-19 protocol by going to the pub.

England have been put into a strict bubble for the autumn campaign, which now begins against Italy in the Six Nations in Rome on Saturday.

Players have all signed codes of conduct about health and safety, but Jones admitted it is impossible to remove the risk of players slipping up.

‘We’ve spoken about it briefly,’ he told Sky Sports. ‘We’ve told the players they’ve got to be responsible.

‘They’ve got a responsibility to their team-mates, to their family, to English rugby and they all understand that.

‘I can’t tell you 100 per cent we’re going to be perfect, but our intention is to be.’

Barbarians covidiot Sean Maitland has been dropped from the Scotland squad by head coach Gregor Townsend, after breaking the bio-secure bubble last week.

The Saracens wing was part of a group, including former England captain Chris Robshaw, that left the hotel to go drinking.

‘We are working hard to ensure our training camp remains secure in terms of Covid protocols and as such Sean’s actions last week with the Barbarians mean he won’t be able to rejoin our group now,’ said Townsend. ‘We will review the situation in the coming weeks.’

Ratu Tagive has replaced Maitland ahead of Scotland’s match final Six Nations match away to Wales on Saturday.

Wales will host England behind closed doors in Llanelli on November 28, it has been confirmed, after lockdown rules meant the WRU had to scrap a plan to play at Tottenham’s new stadium to maximise revenue.
