PREMIER League clubs must brace themselves for a multi-million pound levy to save ailing lower league clubs, it emerged last night.

A radical tax on transfers or telly cash remains “an option” if a rescue package isn’t secured for financially insecure clubs in the football pyramid.

A government source told The Sun on Sunday that the plan is on the table as clubs suffered severe hardship due to coronavirus.

There is huge frustration across Whitehall that a deal hasn’t been struck between the Premier League to help save English Football League clubs.

The EFL had asked for £250 million but the Premier League only offered £50 million in grants and loans for just League One and Legaue Two clubs.

It follows Tory MP Julian Knight, who chairs the Commons’ culture select committee, declaring the government take a percentage of the multi-billion TV deals.

He said: “If this deal isn’t done pretty quickly I think the government should consider pretty radical action in order to intervene.

“It could involve for example a levy on TV revenues and a redistribution to the EFL.”

A Whitehall insider last night said: “There is a deal to be done and the government’s message is to knuckle down, get on with it and come up with a proper plan.”

A spokesman for the Premier League said: “The Premier League has no intention to cause divides and will engage with any EFL club, including those in the Championship, that is suffering severe financial losses due to the pandemic.”

Dortmund 2-0 Zenit: Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland provide late goals

dortmund 2 0 zenit jadon sancho and erling haaland provide late goals

Borussia Dortmund needed a 78th-minute penalty from Jadon Sancho and a stoppage-time goal from Erling Haaland to beat visitors Zenit St Petersburg 2-0 in their Champions League Group F match on Wednesday.

The Germans, who lost their opener to Lazio, controlled the game from the start but carved out few chances before Vyacheslav Karavaev inexplicably wrestled Thorgan Hazard to the ground for Sancho to score from the spot.

Haaland added a second in stoppage time with a powerful run.

Borussia are on three points with Zenit bottom of the group after two defeats in two games. Club Brugge and Lazio are top on four points.

The hosts, buoyed by their derby win over Schalke 04 on the weekend, had possession from the start but could not break past a deep-lying Zenit.

Norwegian striker Haaland had their best chance of the first half when his powerful shot flew just wide after captain Marco Reus missed two good chances of his own.

After pressure straight after the restart, Dortmund quickly ran out of ideas on how to crack open the Russian defence.

With Zenit gradually growing bolder, it looked like the Germans would have to settle for a draw until Hazard was brought down and Sancho sent the keeper the wrong way and Haaland sealed the win.

Dortmund next travel to Club Brugge on Nov. 4 while Zenit host Lazio.

Amazingly, the Spaniard has actually found the net 18 times this year – but 11 of them have now been ruled out for offside.

It is a feeling the 28-year-old is growing accustomed to and it has only been a few days since he last suffered the same frustration.

VAR scuppered him again on Sunday in domestic action on another frustrating night for Juve as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Verona in Serie A.

Before that he came into the clash in stunning form following his return to the Italian champions in the summer.

Morata had three goals in three games but he has now fired a blank in both thanks to the eagle eye of VAR.

Juventus won 2-0 at Dynamo Kiev last week in their opening group game but they were unable to find a way past Barcelona – despite the recent turmoil both on the pitch and off it at the Nou Camp.

Dembele broke the deadlock with just 14 minutes on the clock and they managed to hold on to that advantage until the dying stages.

Morata was not the only one feeling frustrated.

Juventus, missing Cristiano Ronaldo after he tested positive for Covid-19 again, tried in vain to draw level.

But Messi kept his nerve to slot home a penalty in additional time to make it two wins from two in Group G.
