psg boss thomas tuchel facing selection nightmare for manchester united champions league clash

Thomas Tuchel has given a blunt assessment of Paris Saint-Germain‘s injury crisis ahead of their Champions League clash with Manchester United next week.

The Ligue 1 side could be without up to eight players for the game in Paris with Mauro Icardi, Julian Draxler and Marquinhos all out injured while the club have also been affected by coronavirus

PSG made the final of the competition last season, falling to Bayern Munich at the last hurdle, but have been drawn in a tough group with United, RB Leipzig and Istanbul Basaksehir.

Tuchel claimed he could have just 11 players fit for the game against United.

‘We have to take responsibility for Neymar and Kylian [Mbappe], who played almost 90 minutes yesterday, and the South Americans who have travelled a lot,’ said the PSG boss.

‘Maybe we will only have 11, 12 or 13 players available.

‘We have a bit of bad luck. Draxler and Marquinhos are doubtful for Manchester too. Colin Dagba had a positive [coronavirus test] with the U21s. In the event of a negative test, he can return to the group.

‘Kehrer is injured for a few weeks. Bernat and Icardi are injured, Icardi, a week ago. It’s the internal ligament in the knee, it’s not too serious but he will miss Nimes and Manchester.’

‘Today we have Danilo back, but he has been in contact with Cristiano Ronaldo, so the medical staff wish he did not train with the group,’ said Tuchel. ‘Verratti was injured with Italy, and is in contact with our doctor now.

‘We are missing too many players. It is the challenge now to find a starting XI able to win [against Nimes], because that is the best preparation for Manchester.’

However, Tuchel will have former United midfielder Ander Herrera available after the Spaniard returned to training following a positive Covid-19 test.

Herrera tweeted: ‘After couple of weeks with COVID, I have tested negative today. So happy to be back with the team.’

Pep Guardiola set to go a MONTH without Sergio Aguero due to a hamstring strain

pep guardiola set to go a month without sergio aguero due to a hamstring strain

Manchester City arrived in Marseille with no striker and the gloomy forecast that Sergio Aguero could miss a month with a hamstring strain.

With Gabriel Jesus still sidelined, and teenager Liam Delap ineligible to play in the Champions League, Pep Guardiola will again rely on false nines. He wanted a third senior striker signed in the summer but conceded that City could not afford one.

They have been at odds with the treatment table since, the City manager revealing that the Premier League is suffering almost 50 per cent more muscle injuries than this time last year. Knowing their rivals are also suffering will be scant consolation for a team fighting to locate form and rhythm.

‘With Sergio’s injury, 10-15 days is the minimum,’ Guardiola said. ‘If it’s a little bit longer it will be three weeks, one month. The muscular ones normally do not move [beyond] these [parameters]. Sergio will be the same, there will be no exception.’

The schedule – three games a week, no time for proper training sessions – is gnawing away at Guardiola. He insisted that Aguero was not rushed back last week, with the forward breaking down midway through his third consecutive start at West Ham following four months out with a meniscus problem.

‘We were incredibly patient,’ the Catalan said. ‘We didn’t force him. Unfortunately he was unlucky in one action.

‘Everyone got the statistics than in the Premier League, we have 47 per cent more muscular injuries than the same period last season. It’s not just about City.

‘In just a few months arrive in November, December, January and I guess it will be the same. The strongest ones will survive, the others will fall down.’

Riyad Mahrez, sat next to Guardiola at Marseille’s Orange Velodrome, was forthright on fitness issues. The winger has started the last seven matches and believes the squad should possess enough brawn to plough through the hectic schedule.

‘We are built to play every three days anyway,’ Mahrez said. ‘Everyone knows we are here every three days. We have to be ready – tired or not tired. We have to adapt, we are professional. It’s like this for everyone. We have to play, adapt. Give your best.’

Tricky to consistently accumulate your best results without a recognised striker, though, and tonight will be the fourth game already that someone else will fill the void.

City did attempt to sign another forward over the summer but their pursuit of Lionel Messi ended in legal deadlock with Barcelona.

The club were ready to finance a deal for the 33-year-old but that did not include paying the hundreds of millions in a transfer fee. It required a free transfer clause that expired in June to have remained active, which Barcelona successfully argued it had not.

The way in which Guardiola spoke last night suggested they may have also been pondering an acceleration in landing an alternative No 9. That will now wait until next summer.

‘We considered it, we thought about another but we could not,’ Guardiola said. ‘I think the club do what they can, it’s not a club that wants revenues at the end of the year – it’s what they want and what’s best for the team.

‘If you decide to buy a striker, it has to be a striker in the league of Gabriel and Sergio but we cannot afford it. That is the reality.

‘I’m not saying the club didn’t want to do it – they wanted to make as strong a team as possible. But we thought: “OK, Sergio is back.” We didn’t expect Gabriel to be injured, sometimes it happens.’

SERGE AURIER has been left humiliated after video emerged of the Tottenham ace apparently getting BEATEN UP by an international team-mate.

The defender, 27, captains the Ivory Coast who played a friendly against Japan in Holland last international break, losing 1-0.

A clip has now gone viral on social media of Aurier seemingly being attacked by former Elephants skipper Serey Die.

Sion midfielder Die retired from national duty last year, but was invited to accompany the Ivorian squad.

The film shows Aurier strapped in his seat on the team bus as Die confronts him.

The 35-year-old strikes the £23million Spurs ace about the head and body at least three times during the brief clip.

For good measure Die also grabs Aurier by the throat and tweaks his nose.

The former Stuttgart and Basel star also appears to call Aurier a “dirty b*****d” in French.

A source within the Ivory Coast national camp attempted to play down the incident.

They said: “Serey Die is a big wind-up merchant, and he often has a laugh with his team-mates.

“He makes for a good atmosphere within the squad.

“That is the reason why the coach, Patrice Beaumelle, decided to call him back into the national set-up.

“The video was shot before the game against Japan, and it doesn’t involve a brawl in any way.”

And Africa Top Sports points out that Aurier is seen ‘with a smile’ at one point in the clip, and that Die ‘is known for his fun and humorous character’.

Tottenham chiefs were understood to be considering selling Aurier this summer, but he has played his way back into Jose Mourinho‘s starting XI.

His contract expires in 2022.
