Scottish football’s Joint Response Group has written to Rangers seeking answers on whether a B squad beaten by Dundee United had been given the all-clear for Covid-19.

The club’s midweek friendly win over Motherwell at Ibrox on Wednesday was pushed back two hours to await the outcome of coronavirus test results for first-team players.

As part of the Return to Football strategy presented to the Scottish Government by the Joint Response Group (JRG) clubs are required to ensure all players are tested with a negative result in the seven days before every game.

And Hampden powerbrokers now want to know why test results for some Rangers and Motherwell players only arrived shortly before a kick-off pushed back from 6pm to 8pm. And whether test results for the Rangers fringe squad beaten 4-1 by Dundee United earlier the same day arrived at all.

Scottish clubs are using the same testing company recommended by the SFA, with all player swabs going to the same labs to be processed. One club told Sportsmail on Thursday night that they are powerless to control when the results come back.

Nevertheless, the Scottish government has given the go ahead for the new Premiership season to start next weekend.

And the SFA/SPFL joint response group has now been forced to remind clubs of their obligations amidst fears that permission to start the new season could be revoked.

In a letter to clubs the JRG write: ‘Any failure to adhere to the agreed testing protocol will risk removal by the SG [Scottish government] of the approval for the dispensation given to Premiership clubs compared to the general public in Scotland.

‘Continued positive relations with SG are particularly important as the JRG [Joint Response group] works to progress plans with SG to permit spectators to attend matches.’

The JRG have also asked Hibernian to explain the circumstances of a similar coronavirus cock-up last weekend.

Ross County manager Stuart Kettlewell was left ‘absolutely livid’ when several members of his squad were turned back at Perth after Hibs coronavirus results failed to arrive in time for kick-off.

The Edinburgh club apologised for the error, putting it down to the company used being forced to send samples to England for analysis earlier in the week.

Phil Mickelson US Open horror show costs punter £35,000 after they bet him to complete career Grand Slam at Winged Foot

THE miracle the world’s bravest – or dumbest – punter was hoping for never looked like happening, as Phil Mickelson waved a sad farewell to the US Open.

A Las Vegas gambler slapped down £35,000 on Mickelson at odds of 75-1 before the start of the tournament, hoping to scoop a £2.6million jackpot.

That looked wildly optimistic considering Mickelson is now eligible for the over-50s Champions Tour – where he recorded his only victory this year – and he squandered a host of winning chances in this event when he was in his heyday.

His backer must have been getting excited after the five time Major champion started the tournament with birdies at the first two holes. But it was all downhill from there.

Mickelson, 50, collapsed to a first round 79 as he hit only two fairways, and threw in nine bogeys and a double.

It would have taken the greatest comeback of all time – and a torrent of birdies – for Lefty to have won after that.

But the punter was soon tearing up his betting slip as Mickelson could only manage a four over three par 74 in the second round, to finish on a sorry-looking 13 over.

And it seems even more certain that the Major he needs to become only the sixth player to complete the Grand Slam will remain out of reach.

Mickelson’s frustration was picked up by the TV cameras, as he yelled “I’m so sick of this”, after sending yet another tee shot hurtling miles wide of the short stuff.

He left Winged Foot knowing he should have been a US Open champ long before this.He has been a runner-up six times, and his cruellest defeat came at this course in 2006.

Mickelson needed a par at the 72nd hole for victory, or a bogey to take Geoff Ogilvy to a play-off – but a trademark wild drive led to double bogey six. He will surely never have a better chance than that.

Liverpool are believed to have paid a transfer fee of £25million including potential bonuses.

The Premier League champions saw off competition from Manchester United to seal the deal for in-demand Champions League winner.

Thiago said: “I think it’s an amazing feeling. I was waiting for this moment for a long time and I am very, very happy to be here.

“When the years are passing, you are trying to win as much as you can – and when you win, you want to win more.

“I think this club describes what I am as well; I want to achieve all of the goals, win as many trophies as possible.

“It also [has] this kind of family [feeling] that I need because we [like to] have a very close relationship with the club and I think I will feel this, I will have this feeling, with this club as well.”

Thiago arrives in England having helped Bayern dethrone Liverpool as kings of Europe by beating PSG in the Champions League final last month.

He spent seven seasons in Germany, having signed from Barcelona in 2013.

The midfielder won the Bundesliga title in every season with Bayern, finishing with 235 appearances for the club.

Thiago – who has  39 caps for Spain – had just a year left on his current deal in Munich before embarking on a new challenge.

He added: “I must adapt to the team as fast as I can in the situation and the context that we are living right now.

“Everything is more compact and we started a little bit later, but still it is football and I think we have to mix all the big things up, all the good things we have.

“I will help the team in a defensive and offensive [way] and also in a mental aspect.

“[The fans] are not more excited than I am, for sure not! It is not about saying words, it is about doing the things.

“I will give my heart on the field to my teammates, the club and also to the fans.”

There has been speculation that current midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum could be on his way out of Anfield, with the Netherlands international entering the final year of his contract.

He’s been linked with a move to Barcelona.
