WHAT HAS HE GOT?

Local boy Keane Lewis-Potter has secured a regular place in a Hull side who have lost all their best players over the last few seasons.

Now that Harry Maguire, Andrew Robertson and Jarrod Bowen have moved on, there are chances for others and this teenager has shown promising form from left midfield.

Holding that wide berth, he was desperate to receive more of the ball but the harem scarem nature of this particular game produced little controlled football.

When he did receive the ball, he moved forward well, taking the ball on the half-turn in his stride with comfortable control.

His performance was promising, stretching the opposition defence when he got the opportunity.

He appears to have a good leap and timed one run perfectly to direct a firm header into the goal. It was also noticeable that he drove into the box when a cross was delivered from the opposite side.

As the game became stretched, there was little continuity in a match dictated by powerful players.

WHAT DOES HE NEED?

He was looking for help when confronted by muscular defenders but I felt he needed a clever player inside him to play combinations.

Lewis-Potter needs to be surrounded by calm heads to release him and also requires passing players.

At one stage, needing to offer variety, he swapped wings and was very unlucky on two occasions when he made purposeful runs behind the full back only to discover the pass was not accurate enough to find him.

I would like to have seen him in possession more but undoubtedly he understands the position and gives vibrancy to the team with his tidy skills.

His record suggests he needs to become more goal conscious but there was enough here to suggest that, with a regular place, he will progress. I hope he doesn’t grow frustrated.

monchengladbach 2 real madrid 2 benzema and casemiro save point for rock bottom blancos

REAL MADRID remain rock-bottom of their Champions League group after late goals from Karim Benzema and Casemiro salvaged a point against Borussia Monchengladbach.

The leading 13-time winners are in a precarious position with just two games played after coming within seconds of defeat in Germany.

Marcus Thuram put Gladbach ahead after 33 minutes before doubling his side’s lead in the 58th minute.

But an 87th minute strike from Benzema sparked a stunning comeback from Real, who bagged a second goal in added time through Brazilian midfielder Casemiro.

The result saw Zinedine Zidane’s side pick up their first point of the European campaign after losing 3-2 to Shakhtar Donetsk at the Bernabeu last week.

But Real remain planted to the foot of Group B with just one point following the Ukrainian side’s 0-0 draw at home to Inter Milan this evening.

Shakhtar are top of the group with four points, with Gladbach and Inter both on two after their stalemate a week ago.

Real’s next Champions League game sees them take on Antonio Conte’s no-nonsense Italian side in the Spanish capital.

And anything less than a win will leave a huge question mark over Real’s progression to the knockout stages next year.

The result against Gladbach is sure to sting even more after a hard-earned 3-1 win in the Clasico on Saturday.

Real beat fierce rivals Barcelona at the Nou Camp thanks to goals from Federico Valverde, Luka Modric and Sergio Ramos.

But reports claim the veteran captain was not happy in the dressing room afterwards and blasted Isco – as well as Marcelo – for recent poor performances.

Indeed, Isco was caught on camera during the Barcelona game complaining about boss Zidane’s tactics.

And he made it two games warming the bench after also remaining an unused sub against Gladbach.

chelsea opponents krasnodar hope english fitness guru who worked with bale at southampton can be their secret weapon

ENGLISHMAN ABROAD John Phillips is the former QPR fitness guru trying to ruin Frank Lampard’s Champions League plans.

Portsmouth coach Phillips joined Russian side FC Krasnodar this month as their new Head of Sport Science.

And he will be the man trying to get the competition debutants up to physical speed before tonight’s glamour tie against Chelsea.

Until May 2019, Phillips worked at Championship side QPR for more than six years, primarily as their head of performance.

Over a decade ago he was academy and reserve fitness coach at Southampton at a time when superstar Gareth Bale was coming through the ranks on the South Coast.

In a varied career, he has also worked at the FA, the EFL, in Sweden (Malmo), Saudi Arabia (Al Ahli), Taiwan (national team) and China (Nantong).

And he will be using his experience of English football to give Lampard nightmares on the long flight home.

Phillips, who attended Southampton Solent University, said: “Southampton and QPR are both big clubs, very similar to Krasnodar.

“They compete in multiple competitions the same as we are now with the League, the Cup after Christmas, and obviously the European football and Champions league.

“When I was at QPR it was like a new project as well, so we had to develop everything and build systems and protocols to try and improve on-the-field performance. There are similarities there, yes.

“This is a great challenge for me.

“Obviously, I spoke a lot with the club representatives when they asked me if I’d be interested in the project and I really liked the ambition and the ideas.

“It’s a great opportunity to try and develop and improve within playing European football and competing in the Russian League.

“It’s good to now try and evolve everything else around football.

“I’m well aware of the history within Russian football and particularly following and being involved in European football.

“And I’m well aware there is a lot of history over here and a great reputation for players being hard working and aggressive.”

For Krasnodar, nicknamed the Bulls, this will be a special occasion, their first match at home in the Champions League.

Phillips added: “Chelsea, same as most English clubs, they’re going to be aggressive, the speed of the game will be high.

“They’re doing okay in the league, but they will want to come and they will want to really try and dominate so it’s going to be tough.

“Obviously with the injuries we’ve got and things like that.

“But for me we have to fight, we have to work hard, and try not to be intimidated by them in any way. It’s a lot to do in the mentality and as well as the physicality.

“We need to concentrate for 95-96 minutes. We can’t switch off because you’ll get punished by these sort of teams.

“Don’t give them the respect and allow them to play, we have to be aggressive and take the game to them.”
