He had more up his sleeve at Chepstow last time than the neck official margin suggests.

He handled the undulating course there so should have no problems with Goodwood. He carries a 6lb penalty today which gives him every chance with top claimer George Rooke on board.

Glamorous Anna has cheekpieces on for the first time which should help keep her in a straight line. She won at Windsor latest despite veering and is another who could defy a penalty.

Electric Ladyland was in winning form here in June and followed a modest Royal Ascot effort with another victory at Windsor. She’s creeping up the weights but that course form is a big plus.

Newyorkstateofmind improved to take second at Bath 12 days ago. He likes this trip and is another to consider.

Spanish Angel didn’t enjoy six furlongs when midfield at Yarmouth latest and will be much happier over this trip. He’s just 3lb higher than his last win.

1.45

ZABEEL CHAMPION has lived up to his name with a couple of good wins at Newmarket this season.

He struck on the Rowley Mile in June before taking a big step forward when winning a hot handicap at the July meeting.

He still looked a little green there but saw out this trip well and Mark Johnston runners are always respected at Glorious Goodwood.

Magnetised has had just two runs and looked a nice prospect when second over a mile at Thirsk earlier this month. Stepping up in trip should bring out the best in him off what could be a lowly mark.

Al Salt is progressing well on the all-weather and had lots in hand when scoring at Wolverhampton. If he repeats that on turf he’ll be right there.

Group One Power has been a little hit and miss but he has talent as he showed when a close fourth in the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot. He drops in distance here after not getting home at HQ latest.

2.15

YAZAMAN can land a deserved big win after hitting the crossbar on his past two runs.

He won a Yarmouth maiden on debut before stepping into Listed level for a close second in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Those runs were over five furlongs and he moved up to this trip for a close second in the July Stakes at Newmarket last time. He has a lot more to offer and is already a couple of steps ahead of these rivals.

Qaader was fourth in that July Stakes when going off too quickly in front. He is another who ran a belter at the Royal meeting when second in the Coventry Stakes.

Admiral Nelson was midfield in that race after winning a Curragh maiden nicely for Aidan O’Brien. As you would expect he’s beautifully bred and should be capable of better than that.

Gussy Mac transformed his all-weather form to turf when winning the Listed Dragon Stakes at Sandown earlier this month. He looks the type to improve again for stepping up to this distance.

2.45

ENGLISH KING was one of many who left his run too late in the Derby last time but he had the excuse of not getting the clearest of runs turning for home.

Frankie had to sit and suffer before coming home like a horse with plenty left in the tank. He was impressive in taking the Lingfield Derby Trial before that so there’s every chance he’ll handle Goodwood and it wasn’t the track that beat him last time.

Khalifa Sat loves it around here having won a maiden and the Listed Cocked Hat Stakes here. He then got closer to Serpentine than anyone in the Derby and will be right there again.

Mogul is another coming from the Epsom Classic where he didn’t seem at home on the track. He stayed on to finish sixth and needs to step up from that.

Al Aasy can’t be ignored after his convincing success in the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket’s July meeting.

He didn’t get the best of runs there so that effort deserves marking up slightly. This is just his fifth run and there should be a lot more to come.

NAZEEF extended her winning run to six with an impressive Group 1 success in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket three weeks ago.

That built on her Duke Of Cambridge win at Royal Ascot where she battled really well to land the spoils. This is her first foray beyond a mile but she shapes like a stayer and it could bring improvement.

Fancy Blue has already had a superb season with a second in the Irish 1,000 Guineas followed by success in the French Oaks over this trip.

That’s clearly top-class form and this is just her fifth run so there’s more to come. The 8lb she gets off the older fillies and mares is another plus.

Ryan Moore has chosen her over Magic Wand which speaks volumes. Frankie takes the ride on that Galileo mare who wasn’t disgraced in the Coral-Eclipse last time. She is a proven Group 1 performer but will need to find her very best.

Deirdre’s last win came in this race 12 months ago when she sprang a 20-1 shock. She needed her comeback when fifth in the Eclipse but needs another personal best to defend her title.

Queen Power was a solid third behind Nazeef at Royal Ascot when the mile didn’t seem to suit. She will prefer this trip but hasn’t won beyond Listed level.

3.45

WILLIAM BLIGH was very impressive when scooting in at Haydock last time. He had three lengths in hand crossing the line and it could have been a lot more.

Running Back hasn’t been asked too many questions so far with finishing second at Newbury and on the all-weather at Kempton. He should improve for this longer trip and is a big danger.

Richard Hannon also runs Mark Of The Man who showed good fighting spirit to win at Chepstow maiden. He stays well and deserves to tackle this higher grade.

Rommel was in winning form at Lingfield last month before a fair effort at Ascot latest. He doesn’t have a lot of weight and could take a step forward.

4.20

TEODOLINA managed to finish a close third on debut at Newmarket earlier this month despite looking very much in need of the experience.

She missed the kick and took a good while to get the hang of things before finishing her race well. Ryan Moore stays on board and she has more to offer.

Dreams Unwind made a solid start at Newbury when second over this distance. Mark Johnston’s filly should show a lot more with that under her belt.

Iconic Queen was a promising third first time out at Kempton earlier this month. She already stays well and should take a step forward.

Great Vibes is another who was green behind the tip at HQ and can improve, while Spirit Of Bermuda is bred for this trip and comes from a family that has produced plenty of two-year-old winners. She should know her job on debut.

4.55

WINTER POWER didn’t have a lot to beat at Redcar the other day but she absolutely blitzed them to score by an easy five lengths.

The handicapper would like to put a lot more lead in the saddle than the 6lb penalty she carries and canny Tim Easterby is striking while the iron is hot.

Salsoul looks ready to win after a couple of seconds, including at Ripon latest. She has very little weight to carry and should be right there for Mark Johnston.

Acklam Express was a cosy winner at Hamilton over this trip and Oisin Murphy taking over from a 3lb claimer catches the eye on Nigel Tinkler’s hopeful.

He has since netted 36 goals in 136 appearances for the Toffees.

Three of those came in Saturday’s 5-2 win over West Brom at Goodison Park.

The hat-trick sees the 23-year-old leading the race for the Premier League Golden Boot, having also scored the only goal of the game in the opening day win over Tottenham.

After the game, Calvert-Lewis said: ‘The manager is on me every day about one-touch finishes and being in the box – being in the right areas to put the ball in the back of the net.

social media reacts to a wicked nutmeg from daniel podence on kevin de bruyne

Daniel Podence has received high praise on social media after he pulled off an audacious nutmeg against Kevin De Bruyne during Wolves‘ Premier League defeat by Manchester City

The winger displayed excellent skill to tap the ball through the City midfielder’s legs and cross perfectly for Raul Jimenez who headed past Ederson and into the net.

Although De Bruyne is not renowned for his defensive capabilities, Podence understandably won plaudits from football fans after he outwitted one of the most talented players on the planet.

One person posted: ‘All of Kevin De Bruyne’s assists now belong to Daniel Podence.’

Meanwhile, another fan Tweeted: ‘Daniel Podence just sent Kevin De Bruyne for a Belgian waffle. Lovely assist from the pint-sized wizard.’

One person even accused the Portuguese of ‘sending De Bruyne back to Chelsea’.

De Bruyne once again displayed his outstanding talent at the other end of the pitch as City kicked off their season with a win at Molineux, playing a part in all three goals scored by Pep Gardiola’s team.

The 29-year-old was taken down by Roman Saiss in the first half before picking himself up to score emphatically from the penalty sot.

The Belgium international then played anther incisive pass to Raheem Sterling who set up Phil Foden with a tap in to double the visitors’ lead.

Podence missed two opportunities to half the deficit, first shooting wide from the edge of the box and then putting too much weight on his lob over Ederson.

12 minutes of normal time remained when Jimenez headed in from Podence’s teasing cross, but City wrapped up all three points in stoppage time as Gabriel Jesus’ deflected beyond Rui Patricio after De Bruyne won back possession.

pep guardiola says he will play mostly academy players in the carabao cup tie against bournemouth

Pep Guardiola vowed to play a significant number of Manchester City‘s academy in the Carabao Cup as injuries piled up before their season even started.

City were without seven first-team players for Monday’s impressive 3-1 win at Wolves to injury, Ilkay Gundogan joining the list after testing positive for coronavirus ahead of the game.

Guardiola’s squad have under 72 hours’ rest before facing Bournemouth on Thursday and the manager claimed he has no choice but to dip into the academy.

‘We cannot pretend we can recover in three days and then another three days play again,’ Guardiola said. ‘We cannot expend the energy we did today (again) on Thursday against Bournemouth because of Sunday (against Leicester).

‘It is a lack of preparation, we have seven players out and they are not coming back soon. We will see how many players are available.

‘We would like to continue in the Carabao Cup but we don’t have players after this period, to be able to play every three or four days. We’re going to play mostly academy players against Bournemouth and try to keep the energy for the Premier League.’

Academy graduates Tommy Doyle and Adrian Bernabe were joined on City’s bench by 17-year-old Liam Delap on Monday. Delap, son of former Stoke defender Rory, is a highly regarded striker and looks set for a senior debut against Bournemouth.

Guardiola’s fitness problems are mounting, with the Catalan suggesting that only Eric Garcia will recover in time for Leicester’s visit to the Etihad on Sunday. Aymeric Laporte is back training and should return, although Aleks Zinchenko, Bernardo Silva, Sergio Aguero and Joao Cancelo are facing weeks on the sidelines.

‘Most of them are after the Leeds game, the international break,’ Guardiola added. ‘After that they will be ready. Laporte was not injured but only had one training session. Eric had 16 stitches but maybe the next game he will be fit.

‘Unfortunately Ilkay got Covid. I’m concerned for the society, not Man City. The cases are increasing, they’re still there.

‘It’s less aggressive but it’s still there. Aymeric and Riyad passed it and now we have Ilkay. I think he feels quite well now but he has to stay at home. We tried to be prudent, be alert in our private lives, but it is there. We are no different to any human being in society.’

City are on the hunt for a new central defender and have interest in Sevilla’s 21-year-old Jules Kounde. The LaLiga club’s sporting director, Monchi, claimed to have rejected a bid, with the Europa League winners wanting upwards of £60million.

‘There is no agreement with City,’ Monchi said. ‘It’s certain that in the last few days we have received interest from one club for Jules. They submitted an offer that was assessed by the board and it was rejected. If they come back, we will listen and we will respond.’

City will be encouraged by their opening-day victory yet Wolves were made to rue missed opportunities after half-time, with Daniel Podence causing problems to City’s back four but failing to take his chances.

‘It’s not about measuring the positives and negatives,’ Wolves manager Nuno Espirto Santo said. ‘We know how important moments in both boxes are. We were bad defensively in our box in the first half. We should’ve been more clinical. City have talented players but we caused them a lot of problems. There are lots of things we can improve on.’
