Brentford boss Thomas Frank has vowed his team will return even stronger next season, after they fell at the final hurdle in the Championship playoff final.

Fulham won the game 2-1 after extra time, meaning they will be going up to play in the Premier League next season alongside Leeds and West Bromwich Albion.

‘There’s been some good examples in the past with teams coming back even stronger,’ said Frank to Sky Sports after the game. ‘With this club, I’m 100 per cent sure we are coming back even stronger.’

The match was finely poised after 90 minutes, with both teams cancelling each other out.

It took a moment of quick thinking, combined with good scouting, for Fulham’s newest hero Joe Bryan to curl a free-kick in at the near post with goalkeeper David Raya off his line in extra-time.

Bryan revealed that he and boss Scott Parker had been discussing this exact tactic right before the free-kick was taken. But for Frank, it was not a night to point fingers.

‘I will never blame David for anything, he’s been a fantastic keeper for us throughout the season,’ said Frank, despite his goalkeeper’s error.

Fulham full-back Bryan was back in the action for the second goal as well, latching onto a one-two from substitute Aleksandar Mitrovic to score his second.

‘A bit of brilliance from Bryan, and that was the difference between two good teams,’ admitted Frank.

Brentford did get one back just before the whistle blew, but there wasn’t enough time to mount a quick comeback.

‘It’s tough to take, we’ve had a top season in many ways,’ Frank added. ‘We managed to score the most goals and concede the second least. But in football it’s fine margins.’

Despite the bitter defeat, Frank is trying to help his players and the Brentford fans see that it was still a very good season for the Bees.

‘We played some of the most attractive football in this division,’ he added. ‘We need to remember what an achievement from Brentford. We all would’ve loved that fairytale, but the fact is we competed with much bigger clubs on a smaller budget.’

The question now will be whether Brentford will be able to hold onto their excellent front three of Said Benrahma, Bryan Mbeumo and Ollie Watkins.

Frank was cagey about the subject, but said that ‘when we start next season we will have a very strong side out there again.’

FLOYD MAYWEATHER once dropped a heavyweight in sparring after just 30 seconds with a body shot, it has been revealed.

The 43-year-old unbeaten ring legend was renowned for his intense training sessions that lasted hours and would even take place in the early hours of the morning.

Mayweather was a pioneer for HBO’s ’24/7′ and Showtime’s ‘All Access’ pre-fight shows that would follow fighters with unprecedented access to their preparation.

But the American would have one restriction – there could be no filming of his sparring sessions.

Former Mayweather training partner Dmitriy Salita, now a promoter, has lifted the lid on what went on during these secret spars, as he revealed the five-division champion once floored a cocksure heavyweight with ease.

Salita told EsNews: “We were at the gym just hanging out, it was after one of Floyd’s fights.

“This guy comes into the gym, a heavyweight and said, ‘I wanna get some boxing’ and he was just talking a lot of smack.

“There was no-one big enough to spar so Floyd was like, ‘Leonard [Ellerbe], get my stuff from the car’.

“Floyd got in the ring with him for 30 seconds and does his shoulder roll and block and just hits the guy with a body shot, and drops him, a heavyweight.”

Former sparring partner Salita revealed Mayweather would spar four-minute rounds, with just 15 SECONDS breaks in between.

Mayweather retired officially in 2017 after beating UFC star and ring debutant Conor McGregor, but did return for an exhibition bout against Japanese kickboxer Tension Nasukawa a year later.

Despite leaving the sport on a perfect 50-0 record, the former pay-per-view king announced last November that he was “coming out of retirement in 2020” to work with UFC boss Dana White.

Mayweather said he would “absolutely” be interested in rematching McGregor or fighting UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, but insisted he would not face a recognised boxer.

Despite the comeback talks and clips of him returning to training, the 43-year-old was hit with double tragedy as his former partner and mother to three of his kids Josie Harris died a week before his uncle and ex-trainer Roger passed away.

Mayweather then announced online his attention had switched to becoming a trainer, having been inspired by Roger, as he took his son Kouran and nephew Chris on the pads.

GARETH BALE sealed his return to Spurs for the rest of the campaign — but could end up staying for LONGER.

Welsh superstar Bale was mobbed by fans when he arrived at Tottenham’s training ground on Friday to wrap up his season loan from Real Madrid.

The North London club have agreed to pay a percentage of his wages in a bargain deal which amounts to around £12million for the season — and they will officially confirm it today.

SunSport understands if the move goes well, it could even be extended for a further year until the end of NEXT SEASON, when his Bernabeu contract is due to expire.

Spurs have worked the numbers to keep within their wage structure and bring back Bale, 31, seven years after selling him to the Spanish giants for a then-world record £86m.

The North Londoners also completed a £25m swoop for Real left-back Sergio Reguilon on a five-year deal.

Spain ace Reguilon, 23, and Bale flew to London yesterday on a private jet chartered by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.

After landing at Luton airport, they were driven to the Enfield training HQ in separate luxury cars.

When they arrived they were greeted by dozens of fans who had congregated outside the gates.

Bale was all smiles as supporters with camera phones chanted: “Gareth Bale, Gareth Bale, he was born to play for Spurs.”

Both new boys also met boss Jose Mourinho, who had spent the night with his players in the training ground’s luxury lodge after arriving back from Thursday’s 2-1 win over Lokomotiv Plovdiv in Bulgaria early yesterday.

Mourinho then put his stars through a light training session ahead of their Premier League clash at Southampton tomorrow lunchtime.

After the victory in Plovdiv, Mourinho said: “I don’t like the number of players I have in my squad.

“It’s very, very difficult to manage in every aspect. Too many players.”

Mourinho’s comments hinted he is now looking to trim his squad.

Genoa target Danny Rose, Ryan Sessegnon, Juan Foyth, Paulo Gazzaniga and Erik Lamela are those likely to move on before the deadline.

Leroy Sane admitted he felt ‘a little sorry’ to play a part in Bayern Munich‘s eight-goal thrashing of his former club Schalke.

Bayern’s new £44million signing from Manchester City was on target as they opened their Bundesliga title defence in ominous fashion on Friday night.

But the winger said he had some sympathy for the club that nurtured him in the youth ranks before he made 57 first-team appearances between 2014 and 2016.

‘Of course, I was at Schalke for a long time,’ Sane said. ‘To get such a defeat at the start of the season and it goes so haywire is difficult.

‘I’m of course a little sorry.’

Debutant Sane scored the seventh of Bayern’s eight goals at the Allianz Arena after a Serge Gnabry hat-trick plus strikes from Leon Goretzka, Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller put the Treble winners in command.

England under-17 international Jamal Musiala became Bayern’s youngest ever goalscorer, at 17 years and 205 days, by scoring the eighth.

‘It felt very good to be on the pitch with the boys,’ Sane added.

‘It was a very good day. I feel completely at ease and knew that it would work out well with the team. Everyone was hungry.

‘Everyone just wanted to attack and give full throttle.’

Bayern have now won 22 consecutive matches in all competitions, having achieved a Treble of Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League last season.

Hansi Flick’s team are unbeaten in 31 games during this calendar year and last tasted defeat on December 7 last year.
