toto wolff reveals he is considering stepping down from role as mercedes team principal

Toto Wolff says he is considering whether to continue as Mercedes team principal beyond this season.

Mercedes has become the most successful F1 team in history under Wolff’s guidance but his contract runs out this year, and the Austrian he is ‘reflecting’ on what his next move will be.

If Wolff decides to move on it could force prize asset Lewis Hamilton to consider his plans with the constructor, after the six-time World Champion previously said he wanted clarity on the 48-year-old’s future before committing beyond this year.

‘Many factors make me want to stay but it takes its toll,’ Wolff said. ‘There is no reason not to continue. We will find out in which role.’

He said: ‘We want to do the best for the team and continue to see the team prosper. I really enjoy the role and my plan is to continue but I never want to be in situation where you are becoming from very good to good.’

The principal-driver pairing between the two is one of the most formidable in F1 history, with the latter winning five of the last six drivers’ championships, with the only one Hamilton missed in 2016 also going to then Silver Arrows driver Nico Rosberg.

The Austrian also owns a 30% stake in the Mercedes F1 team and is the CEO of the constructor’s whole motorsport programme.

Wolff, who is known to have a respectful and honest relationship with Hamilton, said he doesn’t think is own future will make a difference to whether the driver stays on.

‘Lewis staying is the best thing he can do and it’s what he wants to do,’ Wolff added.

‘He has the possibility of achieving great success. It’s flattering he says it is dependent on what I do but he doesn’t need me.

‘I haven’t taken the decision yet. These are discussions that are ongoing and positive and I enjoy them.

‘I don’t want to give you the spin I am leaving because that is not the case. It is just I am in a moment of reflection, where F1 is heading, what is happening around Covid and also personal reasons.

‘[My wife] Susie is in a good place running a Formula E team and that means she is away a lot and I have been to something like 120 grands prix in the last eight years and it is something we are thinking about.’

Wolff added that there has been progress in talks with F1 over Mercedes’ contract to race in the sport after this year after indicating a week ago that talks had hit a stumbling block.

“I have had very constructive discussions with Chase [Carey, the F1 chairman and chief executive] over the last week,” Wolff said.

“Most of the clarifications we wanted to achieve have been discussed and I feel we are at a good point where we can sign the Concorde Agreement and move on.”

Sky Sports claims the Germany international, 27, was left shocked after being axed from Frank Lampard’s squad for Sunday’s 2-0 home defeat to Liverpool.

Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma were preferred in the heart of defence.

And youngster Fikayo Tomori was selected on the bench before impressing as a second-half sub.

Chelsea now have five senior centre-backs at the club after signing Thiago Silva on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain.

There are also three prospects ready to break through from next season including Malang Sarr, Ethan Ampadu and Xavier Mbuyamba.

Rudiger has entered the final two years of his Chelsea contract.

And he is now believed to be weighing up his options with regular game time no longer guaranteed.

The former Stuttgart star joined Chelsea from Roma in 2017 for £30million.

Rudiger has played 115 times for the Blues, winning the 2018 FA Cup and 2019 Europa League.

But he is ready to turn his back on west London to secure his place in Germany’s squad for Euro 2021.

Boss Lampard also offered no words of comfort following Rudiger’s omission from the Liverpool game.

Lampard explained: “We have five centre halves at the club so I can’t pick three on the bench so that’s the way it is.

“I have to pick the squad via training, situations and the opponent.”

The retro video game was first released in 1996 before Jesus was even born.

But the popular franchise is still releasing versions now, with the game providing the inspiration for Jesus’ latest ink.

And his new tats – inked during the break between seasons – seemed to provide City‘s striker with a good luck omen.

He got his name on the scoresheet in the dying seconds of City’s opening game of the 2020-21 Premier League season.

Jesus’ strike in the 95th minute helped seal three points for Pep Guardiola‘s side after Kevin De Bruyne and England bad boy Phil Foden also found the net.

Raul Jimenez had pulled it back to 2-1 for Nuno Espirito Santo‘s men before Jesus’ decisive finish.

Jesus also had four aces inked onto his wrist in 2017.

And he previously revealed the motivation behind some of his other tattoos and said: “I have four and all of them represent me a little bit.

“One is for faith, the other ones are one of Jardim Peri, where I was born and grew up with the dream of being a football player.

“The other completes the image of the neighbour of my childhood. The last one is the quote of my mom.

“I intend to have more tattoos about my career in the future.”
