virgil van dijk slams champions drop in standards during 7 2 mauling by aston villa

Virgil van Dijk never stopped trying to roar a sleeping Liverpool into life as they were battered 7-2 by Aston Villa, and has urged his fellow Reds to burden the blame.

Jurgen Klopp‘s men were overrun by the pre-season relegation candidates, going in 4-1 at half-time after allowing a first-half Ollie Watkins hat-trick.

The Champions but quickly regather for a clash with bitter rivals and league leaders Everton on Saturday – with Carlo Ancelotti’s side boasting a 100 per cent record after four games.

‘If we are looking at ourselves, it felt like it was one of those performances where we just weren’t 100 per cent at it from the start until the finish,’ Van Dijk told SkySports.

‘Obviously the goals we conceded we should have done better but also the chances we had – because we had many – we should have done better as well.

‘Overall we’re all very disappointed. We shouldn’t lose with the numbers we did and now it’s key to stick together and don’t let this happen again hopefully.’

‘We have to be very hard with each other – and we will be. It’s key to not get crazy or anything but we have to be stepping it up.

‘The performance level between the last game against Arsenal for the league and today was too big. All of us, everyone has to take responsibility.’

Klopp was even seen laughing in disbelief during the tie, but he must now weigh-up whether the humiliation was a fluke, or Villa exposed a critical flaw in the Reds’ once impenetrable system.

Fashion icon Hamilton made sure he stood out from the crowd when he arrived on Friday.

The 35-year-old could be seen a mile off in his bright pink double denim outfit.

He completed the look with a white t-shirt, white trainers and his sunglasses.

Hamilton kept his ‘Black Lives Matter’ face mask on as he sped around the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari track.

The F1 champion had his hair slicked back in braids just days after he showed off a frizzy new look.

Hamilton made history last weekend as he surpassed Michael Schumacher’s win race record.

He moved one step closer to title No7 by winning his record-breaking 92nd Grand Prix in Portugal.

But he has also hinted that he is not far off retirement which could happen at the end of the next racing calendar year.

He told Sky Sports: “I still want to continue to race but I don’t know how much longer it will be.

“It’s definitely not going to be a long time before I stop, so this is a period of time where I’ve got to slowly work out what the future holds.”

Despite talk of retirement, Hamilton has revealed he is keen to sign a new deal with Mercedes.

Arsenal ‘eye January transfer swoop for Dominik Szoboszlai’ as cheaper alternative to Lyon ace Houssem Aouar

arsenal eye january transfer swoop for dominik szoboszlai as cheaper alternative to lyon ace houssem aouar scaled

ARSENAL are sizing up a January swoop for Dominik Szoboszlai as they look for a cheaper alternative to Lyon ace Houssem Aouar, reports say.

The Red Bull Salzburg midfielder has caught the eye over the previous year and Mikel Arteta is believed to be interested.

The Gunners interest comes following their failed pursuit of Houssem Aouar, leaving the squad with a lack of creativity in the centre of the park.

Szoboszlai, 20, is seen as a potential solution and can boast 22 goals and 31 assists in 71 appearances for Austrian champions Salzburg.

And according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal are ‘following’ his progress.

He said on his Here We Go podcast: “The situation is that Arsenal [have been] following Szoboszlai [for] years. So, what we [can] say is that Arsenal’s scouting [department] are looking at the player. At the moment, there are no negotiations.

“There are many clubs interested – he was one step away from joining AC Milan last summer. We will see [in] January, we will see next summer, what [Salzburg] will decide to do – because Szoboszlai wants to play in a top league.

“He’s in love with the Premier League, so let’s see what Arsenal will decide. What I’m told is that Arsenal are looking to sign this kind of player.

“They were looking [at Houssem] Aouar, they are now considering the situation of Szoboszlai. So, let’s see what will happen next summer or [in] January, but Arsenal are following the player.”

Emirates chiefs were in for Szoboszlai during the summer but any negotiations appeared to fizzle out.

The North London club are reportedly still keen on Aouar after chasing him for much of the last window.

But financial differences hampered their long-running pursuit.

The club’s efforts then blew up just before deadline day as Lyon pulled the plug on negotiations.

Mikel Arteta does have one creative player available to him in Mesut Ozil but he was left out of the Premier League squad as the midfielder’s war with the club escalated.

Ozil then hit back and blasted the club for a lack of ‘loyalty’.
