wayne rooney suffers covid 19 scare after pal who delivered him a watch tests positive

Wayne Rooney has reportedly been forced to take an emergency coronavirus test amid fears he could have caught the virus from an infected friend who visited his home last week.

According to The Sun, the Derby captain has been left ‘angry’ after Josh Bardsley, 27, entered his multi-million-pound mansion to deliver him a luxury watch last Thursday despite being contacted by Test and Trace in the days prior – and he has since tested positive for Covid-19 sparking concerns Rooney could have been infected.

The unaware former England star had played for Derby in Friday night’s defeat.

In a statement to the Sun, Rooney, 34, said his health, as well as his family’s and team-mates, had been jeopardised by someone acting against government guidelines.

A spokesman said: ‘Wayne met Josh Bardsley briefly when he visited Wayne’s house on Thursday.

‘Wayne was not told by Josh or anyone else before or during that visit that Josh had been told to take a coronavirus test.

‘Had he known Josh had been contacted by Track and Trace or had tested positive he would have refused to have seen him.

‘Wayne is angry and disappointed that he, his family and his club have been put in this position by someone acting secretly and in breach of government and NHS guidelines. He is now taking a coronavirus test as a result of his contact with Josh.’

In line with Government’s guidelines, people should self-isolate for 14 days if contacted by Test and Trace.

Derby and Watford players will also now likely to have take a coronavirus test after Rooney’s Covid scare.

The Championship club released a statement in the early hours of Sunday, which read: ‘On being made aware of this news the club has ensured that the appropriate measures were taken in line with strict EFL COVID-19 protocols and UK Government guidelines, which the club is operating under.

‘The club will continue to adhere to the COVID-19 rules and protocols to ensure that the safest possible environment is provided for its players and staff.

‘The club will make no further comment unless a further update is required in relation to this matter.’

MailOnline have approached Bardsley for comment.

The ex-Manchester United striker posed for pictures with his new watch on Bardsley’s Avant Garde Global business Instagram account.

Rooney must wait to see the result of his test but could now be a major doubt for Derby’s next four matches against Huddersfield, Nottingham Forest, Cardiff and Bournemouth.

Alisson becomes latest Liverpool star to lay into Pickford after his horror tackle on van Dijk

alisson becomes latest liverpool star to lay into pickford after his horror tackle on van dijk

Alisson has become the latest of the Liverpool contingent to criticise Jordan Pickford for the reckless challenge that has ended Virgil van Dijk‘s season.

The Dutch defender required surgery on his knee after a poor challenge from the Everton goalkeeper in the Merseyside derby earlier this month saw him suffer serious anterior cruciate ligament damage.

Liverpool team-mates Adrian and Georginio Wijnaldum were already among the Anfield stars who insisted they could not defend the England No 1 for the tackle, with the latter labelling it ‘stupid’.

Now, speaking to Sky Sports, Brazilian Alisson admitted that while goalkeeper’s can have different techniques when tackling insisted that Pickford’s challenge was ‘an unnecessary moment’.

‘Every goalkeeper has a different way to play, a different way to move, but on that moment 100 per cent it is not a necessary movement,’ he said.

‘But thinking what I have in my mind when I go for a situation, I go to finish the situation because if I go too soft I know the opponent can score.

‘Everyone has their own way to go for the ball. I don’t agree with that [Pickford’s] way, everybody can see that but yeh it was just an unnecessary moment and movement.’

Dutch international Wijnaldum was far more scathing in his assessment earlier this month, adding: ‘The way Pickford went in was completely stupid in my opinion.

‘I don’t believe he wanted to injure Virgil but the way he made the tackle he didn’t care about what happened after the tackle. It’s happened a lot in games against Everton.

‘In my opinion they take it too far in the games we play against them. I know it’s a derby and sometimes it goes over the top but it was too much. It was not the only tackle like that. Richarlison on Thiago was also a nasty one. That’s what annoys me the most.

‘Accidents can always happen in football. You can be unlucky and injure someone but the way they were doing it was completely unacceptable. It makes it even harder when they don’t get punished, in this case Pickford.’

Despite playing the same position as Pickford, 33-year-old Liverpool keeper Adrian admitted he could not find a viable way of finding an excuse for his Everton counterpart.

‘It was a very bad challenge in a very bad position of Virgil’s body,’ said the Reds shot-stopper to Sky Sports.

‘It was late. No player is allowed to do this kind of challenge.

‘I’m a goalkeeper and I always defend goalkeepers, but going for a ball like this in that case… I don’t know.

‘It’s not fair in that situation because he hasn’t got much chance to block the ball in that position, just to hurt the other player.’

Liverpool left Goodison Park with just one point after the game ended in a 2-2 draw, with Henderson’s stoppage-time winner ruled out due to a controversial offside call.

Everton keeper Pickford was not be punished for the challenge on Van Dijk as it was seen by referee Michael Oliver, leading to further fury at Anfield.

Liverpool were also livid after Pickford’s lunge went unpunished with David Coote, the official overseeing proceedings at Stockley Park, failing to look at whether Everton’s goalkeeper should have been dismissed.

Remarkably, Sportsmail was told earlier this month that Coote thought the offside — which he checked forensically — nullified what happened afterwards.

Sportsmail also revealed last week referee Michael Oliver and Coote will be scrutinised in an official mid-season review for the shocking decision not to send Pickford off.

Fabinho and Joe Gomez will deputise in van Dijk’s absence, but Liverpool’s injury crisis only seemed to worsen when the Brazilian suffered a hamstring victory in the victory against Midtjylland on Tuesday.

And while Fabinho – naturally a deep-lying midfielder – looks set to miss the crucial clash against Manchester City next weekend, reports have since emerged that his injury is not bad as first feared with concerns he could have been out for six months.

watch kieran tierney arrive in just t shirt before arsenal win over dundalk in freezing temperatures as others wrap up

KIERAN TIERNEY turned up at Arsenal in just a t-shirt last night despite the freezing winter temperatures.

The Gunners beat the Irish side 3-0 at the Emirates but the real highlight was before the match with fans stunned as the Scot arrived with just one layer on.

Tierney’s team-mates were seen wrapped up in thick coats and tracksuits as they turned up at the stadium.

Until hilarious footage showed the hardy 23-year-old strolling past in just a thin pick club polo shirt.

After the video surfaced online, fans were quick to comment on Tierney’s apparent resistance to last night’s wintry conditions.

One wrote: “Yes, that is Kieran Tierney in a shirt.”

Eddie added: “Tierney doesn’t feel the cold. He’s a machine.”

Az tweeted: “Afraid of nothing, he’s a good old fashioned footballer love it.”

And Imran chipped in with: “Always wondered when we were going to have a player like Scott Brown.

“A proper hard man not afraid of any weather.”

Celtic captain Brown was labelled ‘Russia’s favourite Scotsman’ when he led the Hoops on a walk around Saint Petersburg in -11C temperatures.

Former Celtic man Tierney was hailed as a future Gunners captain in June when the down to earth star arrived for their Sheffield United clash with his belongings in a carrier bag.

Tierney replaced Granit Xhaka in the 74th minutes – coming on in a short-sleeved jersey – as the North Londoners comfortably saw the game out.

Eddie Nketiah, Joe Willock and Nicolas Pepe scored in within four minutes either side of half-time to give Arsenal a comfortable win.

And they are top of Group B with two wins from two.

Mikel Arteta hints fringe players could feature against Manchester United after Europa League win

mikel arteta hints fringe players could feature against manchester united after europa league win

Mikel Arteta has told his Arsenal fringe players they have worked their way into contention for Sunday’s clash with Manchester United after a strong Europa League showing in the win over Dundalk.

The Gunners made 11 changes for the game against their Group B opponents as goals from Eddie Nketiah, Joe Willock and Nicolas Pepe secured a comfortable 3-0 victory.

The wholesale alterations came on the back of two consecutive Premier League defeats as the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Thomas Partey remained on the bench against the Irish champions.

While most of his key men will be expected to return for Sunday’s game at Old Trafford, Arteta insists his squad players have done their chances of being involved against United no harm at all.

‘I’m really pleased with the way we went about the game,’ he said.

‘Our attitude from the beginning was spot on, we attacked and created a lot of situations inside the box.

‘We gave a chance to a lot of players who haven’t played many minutes this season and it is something really positive because they showed they are well-prepared, they are at it, and they are ready when we need them.

‘They are always in the frame to play. It is not if we lose or win, it is what they bring to the team. How they train, what they are showing. Results at the end are consequences of many things, but individually how they do things is what determines whether they have the opportunity to play or not.’

Despite scoring a fine third goal just seconds after the interval, club-record signing Pepe endured what was largely a frustrating evening as he continues to struggle to make a lasting impact.

But Arteta has backed the Ivory Coast winger to come good and once again said the £72million price-tag was not having an adverse effect.

‘Knowing Nico and speaking to him, I don’t think it is something that worries him too much,’ he replied when asked about the record fee weighing heavy on Pepe.

‘It is about him hitting his best every single week. I think this is where he believes he can do better and we have to try to help him.

‘It is nothing to do with his attitude. He is a player who takes risks. He is a very creative player and that is the most difficult thing in football, when they all know what you can do as well, how much they want to prevent space, the overloads that they generate to defend you as well.’

Dundalk head coach Filippo Giovagnoli had compared the tie to a boxing mismatch on the eve of the game – labelling his underdogs as super-lightweights coming up against the heavyweights of Arsenal.

But the Italian was pleased with the fight shown by his players, even if they did become the first team in Europa League history not to commit a single foul.

‘I want to congratulate my team and all the players for the way they collaborated defensively, their focus and everything,’ he said.

‘We had to suffer, we know, but I think we were organised defensively.

‘We didn’t concede one shot until the goal that came from a corner kick rebound between our goalie and defender.

‘A few things went well, we tried on three occasions to build up like we prepared, we tried to high press them when they were playing with the goalie, to go man to man and be really aggressive when their goalie had the ball.’
