Willian’s £220K-a-week Arsenal deal sees him become one of the top 10 highest Premier League earners

willians 220k a week arsenal deal sees him become one of the top 10 highest premier league earners

Despite making a move at the age of 32, and leaving a Champions League club for one in the Europa League, Willian has now joined the ranks of the Premier League’s best-paid footballers.

The Brazil winger has secured a sumptuous payday at Arsenal, and the figures which are now emerging of his new contract are quite astonishing.

Arsenal have pulled out all the stops to get their man, handing Willian a lucrative package worth up to £220,000 per week to persuade him to invest the final years of his career at the elite level in north London.

The move comes at a time when the Gunners have found themselves under increased public scrutiny, following their announcement that 55 members of staff are to be made redundant.

This news arrived even after the senior squad members each agreed to take pay deferrals, yet now the club have welcomed Willian on huge wages. When bonuses, a signing-on fee and loyalty payments over the three years are included, it will amount to £220,000 per week, or around £35m over the course of his contract.

Willian therefore, despite his ageing years, will find himself as the ninth-best-paid player in the entire Premier League.

Willian has secured a move to Arsenal and will now pocket £220,000 per week at the Emirates

To put that into context, Willian is now earning more than each one of Liverpool’s famed front three of Mohamed Salah (£200,000 p/w), Sadio Mane (£200,000 p/w) and Roberto Firmino (£180,000 p/w), who are widely hailed as the best attacking trio in world football and have just delivered a record-breaking league triumph for their club.

Willian’s deal sees him surpass these players, despite all three having only just signed new contracts in recent years.

In 2018, Salah penned a new long-term deal at Anfield that will keep him at the club until 2023 and made him one of the highest-earning players in Liverpool history.

But Willian has ensured to keep his stock high, and will now be pocketing £10.6m annually with the Gunners until he is at least 35.

Willian’s terms at Arsenal would indeed see him financially rewarded more than any player in the squad at Liverpool.

That means the Brazilian will also bank more per week than European football’s best defender in Virgil van Dijk (£170,000 p/w), who is also arguably the most important player in Liverpool’s Premier League and Champions League winning team.

David de Gea (£375,000 p/w) is the Premier League’s highest earner while Manchester United also dish out colossal wages to Paul Pogba (£300,000 p/w), and Anthony Martial (£250,000 p/w). He is now paid more than Marcus Rashford (£200,000 p/w).

Were he to have headed to Manchester City and taken the current wage packet, Willian would have been as high up as fourth top-earner at the Etihad, behind only Kevin De Bruyne (£350,000 p/w), Raheem Sterling (£300,000 p/w) and Sergio Aguero (£240,000 p/w).

1 – David De Gea (Manchester United) – £375,000 p/w

2 = Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City) – £350,000 p/w

2 = Mesut Ozil (Arsenal) – £350,000 p/w

4 = Paul Pogba (Manchester United) – £300,000 p/w

4 = Raheem Sterling (Manchester City) – £300,000 p/w

6 – Timo Werner (Chelsea) – £270,000 p/w

7 – Anthony Martial (Manchester United) – £250,000 p/w

8 – Sergio Aguero (Manchester City) – £240,000 p/w

9 – Willian (Arsenal) – £220,000 p/w

10 = Harry Kane (Tottenham) – £200,000 p/w

10 = Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Arsenal) – £200,000 p/w

14 = Roberto Firmino (Liverpool) – £180,000 p/w

14 = Alexandre Lacazette (Arsenal) –  £180,000 p/w

16 = Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool) – £170,000 p/w

16 = Harry Maguire (Manchester United) – £170,000 p/w

18 – Tanguy Ndombele (Tottenham) – £160,000

19 = N’Golo Kante (Chelsea) – £150,000 p/w

19 = Bernardo Silva (Manchester City) – £150,000 p/w

Despite having slipped from their status as Champions League regulars, Arsenal are still paying big bucks.

Willian is not the top earner at the club who finished eighth in the league this season. Mesut Ozil (£350,000 p/w) has surely the most bizarre wage packet in the Premier League considering he is also entering the twilight of his career and is currently at odds with management and unable to break into the team, or often even the matchday squad.

It is presumed Willian’s wage will quickly be overtaken by the club’s star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, should the Gabon international opt to sign a new deal at the Emirates. He is currently paid £200,000 per week.

Players including Hector Bellerin, Granit Xhaka and Bernd Leno all earn half of what Willian now does, on their current Arsenal contracts.

Boss Mikel Arteta was desperate to get his man and Willian is set to play a key role in the club’s transformation under the Spaniard.

Arsenal confirmed the news of his arrival officially on Friday morning, when it was revealed Willian would be taking the No 12 shirt.

Chelsea had remained keen on handing him a contract extension, though were unwilling to match the lofty wages and wanted the forward to take a pay cut on his previous Stamford Bridge deal.

The Blues are busy in the transfer market this summer, after Frank Lampard was finally permitted to sign players following the expiration of the club’s transfer ban.

Chelsea are understood to have already broken their salary record, after making new boy Timo Werner the highest paid player at the club on weekly wages in the region of £270,000.

Willian also now earns more than Harry Kane, who is Tottenham’s star striker and England captain. Kane is the tenth-best-paid player in the league, level with Salah, Mane and Aubameyang.

Chelsea wouldn't meet Willian's demands; Timo Werner is their top earner on £270,000 p/w

Antepost analysis: The big movers in the betting after Saturday’s racing at Newbury, Ayr and Newmarket

antepost analysis the big movers in the betting after saturdays racing at newbury ayr and newmarket scaled

THERE were some informative races around the country on Saturday.

And there has been plenty of activity in the bookies’ antepost markets. We analyse the movers and shakers.

 Alkumait has been introduced at 16s for the Guineas

Alkumait – Classic contender?

Ladbrokes introduced the exciting Alkumait into their 2,000 Guineas betting at 16-1 following his ready Mill Reef success.

Just weeks after stable star Mohaather was retired through injury, trainer Marcus Tregoning looks to have another star on his hands in the son of Showcasing.

He was held up towards the tail of the field by top jock Jim Crowley and showed impressive gears to run down his rivals in the Group 2.

The big question for him going forward will be trip; his mum and most of his immediate family were sprinters while his dad is an influence for speed.

My personal view is that he looks more of a Commonwealth Cup horse than a Guineas contender.

Ilaraab – Quick turnaround?

William Haggas’ improving three-year-old made it four in a row at Newbury on Saturday.

He beat a classy, if under-performing, horse in Royal Marine to bag a hot 1m2f handicap, and he holds an entry in the upcoming Cambridgeshire.

That race is just six days away, but he would likely be well-in if he runs next weekend under a penalty, and the drop to 1m1f won’t be a problem.

Paddy Power cut him into 12-1 from 16-1 for the historic handicap, and connections must be very tempted to run there given the horse’s rich vein of form. He’d go there with a huge chance.

Ocean Wind – Tailor-made for the Ces?

Roger Teal’s classy NH horse showed he could mix it on the Flat with a runaway win in the Cesarewitch Trial on Saturday.

The four-year-old briefly looked under threat, but he galloped clear inside the final furlong to win by four and three quarter lengths off a mark of 89.

Betfair were very impressed with the gelding, who was sixth in last year’s Champion Bumper, and halved his odds (6-1 from 12-1) for next month’s Cesarewitch at HQ.

He looks to have all the tools you need for the big race – he has a good cruising speed, stays all day and looks well ahead of his mark. The one worry (which is odd for a jumper) would be really testing ground.

His two NH Flat wins came on ‘Good’ and the ground was fast at Newmarket yesterday.

Antepost movers

Champion Stakes: Addeybb (11-1 from 12-1, Betway)

Cambridgeshire: Ilaraab (12-1 from 16-1, Paddy Power)

2,000 Guineas: Alkumait (NEW 16-1, Ladbrokes)

Cesarewitch: Ocean Wind (6-1 from 12-1, Betfair)

Addeybb – Underrated by bookies?

The popular Addeybb made a winning return to action in the Listed Doonside Cup at Ayr on Saturday.

That was his first start in three months since he finished an excellent second to Lord North in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He wasn’t at his glittering best at Ayr, beating Lord Glitters by three quarters of a length, but the ground wasn’t absolutely ideal and he won’t have been fully wound up, as it was a prep race for next month’s Champion Stakes.

Betway clipped him into 11-1 from 12s for the Group 1, with several bookies leaving him unchanged, and those odds look very tempting given his brilliant record around Ascot (form figures of 10122 including a second in the race last year) and the likelihood of soft ground.

It could be a red-hot contest this year, but he has been so consistent through his career and if the race starts to cut up he will go off a much shorter price. Plus, the race has been a long-term target.

Wilfried Zaha was sidelined from Man Utd action after rumours of affair with David Moyes’ daughter, Patrice Evra claims

wilfried zaha was sidelined from man utd action after rumours of affair with david moyes daughter patrice evra claims

WILFRIED ZAHA “disappeared” from Manchester United action after rumours of an affair with manager David Moyes’ daughter, his former team-mate Patrice Evra claimed.

Crystal Palace star Zaha moved to Old Trafford in 2013 but was mysteriously sidelined following an impressive pre-season as he struggled to break into the first team.

Former left-back Evra, 39, was in the United squad with Zaha and felt he never recovered following rumours of a fling with then manager Moyes‘ daughter Lauren.

He made the claim while speaking on Sky Sports ahead of Zaha taking to the pitch for the Premier League clash between Crystal Palace and Man Utd.

Evra said: “All the Crystal Palace fans, they know Wilfred deserves better than Crystal Palace with all due respect. Such an electric player.

“I remember I think, what’s real in his Manchester United career is when he had this true or untrue affair with David Moyes’ daughter.

“Because I remember at the pre-season he was playing every day – and when that news comes out… out of the game and he disappeared.

“But what a player.”

After he made the comments, presenter Kelly Cates said: “We don’t know the background to that story so probably best leave that one for now.”

Zaha, 27, has always dismissed the claims as “silly gossip” and said he has never even met Moyes’ daughter.

Sky later issued a statement on Evra’s comments, it read: “We have to clarify a comment made earlier in the programme suggesting there may have been a relationship between Wilfried Zaha and David Moyes’ daughter.

“We understand that Wilfried Zaha has never met David Moyes’ daughter and that the claim made by Patrice was false. We apologise for any offence caused.”

Zaha went from Palace to Man Utd for an estimated fee of around £10million for the 2013/14 season on a five and half year contract- the club’s last transfer overseen by Sir Alex Ferguson.

But after impressing over the summer, the 21-year-old played just 28 minutes in the Premier League for United and was sent out on loan to Cardiff in January.

He returned to Selhurst Park just one year after leaving, and has since remained at the club.

Speculation as to why he fell out of favour became focused on claims of a relationship between him and Lauren, who has 19 at the time.

Moyes himself was sacked from the job after just ten months despite being handpicked for the role by Ferguson.

The Red Devils endured a bruising campaign under his tenure that saw them finish seventh in the Premier League and fail to get into Europe.

Zaha has lamented his period at the club, and previously said he “didn’t really understand” why he fell from grace.

As recently as this June, the Ivory Coast international hit out at Man Utd for failing to offer him any guidance amid the speculation.

In an interview for The Locker Room, he told former team-mate Rio Ferdinand: “No one at the club at all told me anything, I didn’t know what to do whatsoever.

“I remember tweeting something about it saying ‘silly rumours’ because it was getting too much, so I had to say something myself and then I remember the club media messaging me saying ‘you shouldn’t have done that, you shouldn’t have done this’ and I’m thinking ‘you haven’t helped me.’

“I’m here by myself, struggling because people are telling me I’ve slept with the manager’s daughter and that’s why you’re not playing me.

“The funny thing is, it’s carried on for so long I felt like, is the manager not going to come and have a word with me over this?

“That’s how I felt and I’m thinking this is ridiculous man. Up to this day I still get people that think that’s true and I’ve never even met his daughter.”

Speaking in 2015 not long after he rejoined Palace following the tough stint at Old Trafford, Zaha said he had never even met Lauren.

He said: “The thing that really frustrated me about the whole United thing was the fact that people didn’t know what actually went on at the training ground.

“There were just a load of rumours that used to just come out somehow and people would believe them.

“It was either I slept with David Moyes’s daughter or I have got a bad attitude.

“Those are the two rumours that stuck with me until I left. I have had no say since then.”

“As soon as anybody sees me now, people think, ‘Wilfried Zaha, bad attitude’ I don’t understand why.

“It’s like playing any other team in the league now for me, I don’t feel anything about them any more.”

He claimed Moyes told him the reason he was didn’t make the first team was he “wasn’t ready for the Premier league”.
